A very pretty stone caught my eye this afternoon called a Green Amethyst. It was a good sized cushion cut set in a yellow gold pendant. It was kind of a light, minty green color.

Would anyone tell me more about this type of stone? From what i''ve read, green amethysts are prasiolites. Is it just heat treated quartz? And if so, does that mean it''s not very valuable since quartz is so common?

I cannot seem to find any info on it. But I have have found some rough.. I do not think that it heated.. maybe to enhance color? Most rough I have seen has been connected to purple amethyst. HMMM... I have no answer for you and I cannot seem to find ANY information on the web about it. Perhaps the experts will chime in soon!

Doesn''t peridot ''grow'' with amethyst. Aren''t they found together.. could this just be a way of saying peridot?

Yes, it''s heated amethyst or citrine quartz from one deposit in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Prasiolite is not very costly. The color, which means "leek green stone" in Greek, is also said to fade with exposure to sunlight over time.

Some types of crystalline quartz like fine amethyst can be relatively expensive depending on color, cut, etc. Fine colors and qualities are not common and are very beautiful.
