#JOTW Green garnet, Red & Pink spinels, Pink tourmaline and more.

Re: Green garnet, Red & Pink spinels, Pink tourmaline and mo

Starting off with the smallest one. I tried to sell this one a few years ago but got zero bites. Of course, back then, my photography was even worse. The colour isn't the best, is a bit dark but the precision cutting saves it. Do you think it is saleable? I hope the moderators won't throw me in the corner for unintentionally breaking the selling forum rule. I then thought of keeping it for use as a gift later.

Re: Green garnet, Red & Pink spinels, Pink tourmaline and mo

As you can tell, it has a lot of modifiers, some green and some gray too. Not an ideal colour but I think many would be happy with such a stone. It's just that when one has bigger and better stones, it's difficult to justify keeping it.

Not so nice under low lights though.

Re: Green garnet, Red & Pink spinels, Pink tourmaline and mo

I think you could sell it. Dan Stair, eh?

As for that first photo with the stones lined up from L-R:

1. It's pretty but a bit small
2. dibs
3. dibs
4. DIBS
5. You can keep that one
6. DIBS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Green garnet, Red & Pink spinels, Pink tourmaline and mo

Are you "dibs-ing" almost all my unset blue spinels?

The smallest one is precision cut by Dan Stair. 0.86 ct, measuring 6.1 x 5.2 mm. All in all, it's not really small but when one gets used to bigger stones, it just feels dwarfed. I might put it up on DB later this year when I have more time.

Re: Green garnet, Red & Pink spinels, Pink tourmaline and mo

Here's the second on in the line-up. It's my Luc Yen colour changer / shifter from Brad of TGT. 1.36 ct, measuring 7.6 x 5.5 mm. Here is the pink side, so if my hands look funny, it is due to the incandescent light used. The pink appears to have a slight blue modifier.

Re: Green garnet, Red & Pink spinels, Pink tourmaline and mo

Sometimes, it looks lavender under my fluorescent light. The blue colour was taken by the window.

Re: Green garnet, Red & Pink spinels, Pink tourmaline and mo

These were taken by the bay door since it was too windy this weekend. It is fun playing with different types of lights and various strengths. Sometimes the spinel darkens and sometimes it lightens. Sometimes I see one colour and sometimes I see 2 or even 2 different colours at once.

Re: Green garnet, Red & Pink spinels, Pink tourmaline and mo

The third spinel of the line-up was purchased a long time ago. "Native" cut of decent colouration. It is quite shifty and at times, the extinction is too much for me. 2.23 ct measuring 8.61 x 6.34 x 4.35 mm

Re: Green garnet, Red & Pink spinels, Pink tourmaline and mo

This spinel did not want to be photographed properly. The colour was either not right or showed too much obstruction. This colour looks about right.

Re: Green garnet, Red & Pink spinels, Pink tourmaline and mo

It's no surprise you like the 4th spinel in the line up. Barry Bridgestock 1.78 ct blue spinel. It was rather expensive even back then but you can see why from the pictures. As with most blue spinels, this one is shifty as well.

Re: Green garnet, Red & Pink spinels, Pink tourmaline and mo

There's no contest when compared to the "native" cut blue spinel posted earlier (spinel #3). I'm done for tonight. I'll continue with the rest tomorrow.

Re: Green garnet, Red & Pink spinels, Pink tourmaline and mo

Screw it. I'll call dibs on all of them. Except the little barion, as I've just sold one of the same shape, albeit, much lighter. I just seem to be adverse to squareish stones...

Re: Green garnet, Red & Pink spinels, Pink tourmaline and mo

In case Freke isn't able to purchase all of them, I call dibs on the rest of them!!!

Re: Green garnet, Red & Pink spinels, Pink tourmaline and mo

I would love to place even one of your least favorite stones in my jewelry box!

Re: Green garnet, Red & Pink spinels, Pink tourmaline and mo

Hold the dibs...more spinels coming up tonight. Freke, RSN and JLW, thanks for making my spinels feel loved.

AGL called this one a cobalt spinel in the fast track brief. It is dark but the colour is very intense. It had a little setting accident and so had to be repolished quite a bit. It was close to 2 ct but now is likely to be less.

Re: Green garnet, Red & Pink spinels, Pink tourmaline and mo

Very spready with a low crown, hence I often get a table glare. When it puts on a show, it is an impressive spinel. If not for the precision cutting, I don't think it would look as nice.

Re: Green garnet, Red & Pink spinels, Pink tourmaline and mo

I still want the big Luc Yen and Barry the most. Then the little Luc Yen.

Re: Green garnet, Red & Pink spinels, Pink tourmaline and mo

Can I dibs the ones you have yet to show before anybody else takes them?!?! :naughty: :naughty: :Up_to_something:

Not even a crumb for a beggar? haha

More Chrono More! *bounce* eventually she'll get tired of having dibs of EVERYTHING.

You have quite a lovely collection!!

Re: Green garnet, Red & Pink spinels, Pink tourmaline and mo

Thank you! Love zircons too!

Re: Green garnet, Red & Pink spinels, Pink tourmaline and mo

Not to worry, plenty more spinels are coming up tonight. It has been a horribly long day at work, totally unfruitful and a totally wasted trip. Oh well....Maybe some blue shinies will cheer me up.

My favourite 3.83 ct colour change / shift spinel from Luc Yen that goes from blue to lavender to grape purple. 9.84 x 8.09 x 6.61 mm and precision cut.

Re: Green garnet, Red & Pink spinels, Pink tourmaline and mo

I did not take this spinel outdoors as the weather wasn't all that great. The stone did not balance well on my hand either, constantly at risk of dropping. I did drop it once and I think I scuffed the pavilion a bit. :blackeye:

Re: Green garnet, Red & Pink spinels, Pink tourmaline and mo

These were all taken indoors, away from the window, so more lavender than blue. I turned on the incandescent bulbs at my dining room for the third picture so it is a deeper purple with some blue mixed in from the open windows.

Re: Green garnet, Red & Pink spinels, Pink tourmaline and mo

Taken with Barry's spinel away from the window.

While on the topic of this lavender blue spinel, does it look better on my hand facing North / South or East / West? I cannot decide whether to wear it the traditional NS or a more modern EW. It will be a halo setting with a design twist so that it'll look different from a regular halo.
