It's late, I meant "fiance"

It's very very beautiful Mara, but be careful while playing with your rings, the diamonds could scratch each other!

He he! So... is Greg's ring tempting enough to make you get a tension set one, Mara?

Your band seem to fit inside his ring! One does not realize how different finger sizes are until you see the rings

Congratulations Mara on picking out such a great ring..I love the ideal-scope shot..

Mara, I have to say when you bought a diamond for Greg I thought that's so "jersey". But that ring is stunning. Very masculine, moderne & sleek. Wow, I recind my jersey comment.

Crossing my fingers that the slipper fit.

Thanks everyone...but the slipper appears to be a bit big!

He's able to easily put it on and pull it off with no hassle and while he doesn't think that it will fall off (e.g. it's not THAT loose)...it definitely does look big when he pushes it against his finger there is a huge space. He is going to try it on this morning when he is swollen to be sure that his hands just weren't contracted yesterday....and then we are taking it to Willow Glen Jewelers to have them check the size for us. We asked for 10.75 after we tried various titanium comfort fit rings on at 2 stores. A 10.5 fit him as did an 11. We went for the middle ground and now am wondering if we should have gone more like 10.25 or something!

One scenario is that they mis-sized the ring, and its more like an 11 or 11.25. It does look incredibly big, bigger than his 9.5 ring that he wears on his right hand...but part of that is the 'bulk' of the ring as well. Plus the ring is 3mm depth so he's not entirely sure if it's that its deep that makes it feel like it doesn't fit right or what. I would agree except that the ring goes off and on way too easily. So we'll get it checked out.

The options at that point are sketchy...if its 10.75 then we have to have it resized. In the meantime we may try to get those sizing balls added so at least we can not have to send it off before the wedding. Then when we return we can have it modified. It's so disappointing though, we tried so hard to get the size right so this would not happen..and followed their sizing directions to the letter.

Since we are unfamiliar with the titanium and tension set rings, maybe this is normal? Boone..or others...thoughts?

Lastly, we're really happy with the weight of the ring, it's WAY lighter than my platinum e-ring is...even with the gold inlay. Greg ADORES the ring, he's really happy with how it turned out and he doesn't really want to send it away for sizing regardless of what the real size turns out to be. What a dilemma!

Is he used to wearing a ring on that finger? If not, do you think it's just an adjustment factor?

Hubby's wedding band is somewhat loose. He has never lost it. Though, he does take it off when he swims. I think I would err on the large side than the small size.

As you well know, your hand/fingers swell & contract. I find that if I can shake it pretty vigoursly & it doesn't fall off, then it's o.k.

Yes...that is why I am not 100% sure its really LOOSE. But it is a bit big. He thinks it will not fall off but I have thought that too at times and then my finger completely contracts and I can easily pull on and off my ring...AND my mother lost her wedding ring while on a walk in a park one day and it was never considered loose. So I know that things like that can happen and you may not even notice.

The thing is that on his right hand he wears his college ring (I know..he's 35...I've told him..hehee) and it's a 9.5 on his right hand ring finger. It's odd to have the right hand be smaller than the right I guess...but anyway, this ring fits him tightly and he likes it that way. So the wedding ring seems like the other extreme. If he likes having the ring tight on the right hand, the left loose wedding ring seems odd.

It may also be that he is not used to it. Thing is...we only have a few days to let AT know if something is wrong with the ring, so we need to figure out WHAT we are going to do...and then let them know...and figure out if the ring was mis-sized or if we just made a mistake while sizing him. However you cut it, it's a pain because the ring will have to be sent back eventually if we want to have it re-sized. Boo.

Oh and if the sizing was our fault, they charge us something like 40% of the original fee to make a new ring, apparently they noted it's not easy to re-size tension titanium. UGH. If it was their fault, obviously they make a new ring for free.

Is he left handed? If not, that is odd that left would be larger than right. Your right, sizing that tension titanium ring isn't going to be easy. I hope there is something you can do w/ the inside balls. Or maybe another suggestion that the jeweler may have.

My mother has some kind of an adjustable band added to her e-ring. She has some arthritis & needs the size to go over her knuckles. Once on, somehow it adjusts.

Good luck...it sure is good lookin!

Mara,

I sent you a PM last night.

If the ring truly is the correct size, here is one quirk I have with my ring. I find my tension set ring fits way differently than my other rings, and I think it has to do with the gap where the diamond sits. I'm not sure the best way to describe it but...the skin seems to move into that space when trying to wash my hands or when I'm putting on or taking off my ring. I think it makes the ring easier to put on or take off. I think it just one of the quirks of a tension set ring. Hope that makes sence.

My tension ring fits fine, does not turn, nor do I worry about it slipping off, unless my hands are wet. For this reason I looked at getting a plain band to wear at work. I wanted something really cheap so I bought a size 6 comfort fit band off eBay. I thought for sure it would fit as my tension ring is a 6.25. I thought getting the size 6 would prevent the ring from slippping off when wet. Well the ring was way too small. My finger looked like a sausage with a small ring on it. I think it was because the skin on my finger had nowhere to go like it does with my tension ring. Next I bought a size 6 band that was not comfort fit. It's just a tad too big. Odd. I don't care though. I wear it for work only and it was so cheap, it's very easily replacable, and has no sentimental value whatsoever.

Anyways, good luck. I hope everything works out for the best.

Mara

I have a G & A tension set ring, and I agree, I think it has something to do w/the gap where the stone sits.

I wear it on the middle finger of my right hand, and it either fits there perfectly, or my thumb perfectly.

It never turns like my OEC, nor does it slide off.

Mara, it is possible to cut more material from the side walls and retension the ring to make it smaller. If they can't take care of you before wedding time, I could do it. My normal turnaround time for a symmetrical ring like that one is only a couple days instead of the neighborhood of 210 days. The ID can be measured with digital calipers to 3 decimal places. This will tell you immediately if the ring is to size or not. Do not depend on the tapered rods at the jewelers, which have a few different sources of errors. Tension sets are usually very slightly squashed in the side to side dimension relative to the up and down dimension, so somewhere in the range of .005" variance between the two is to be expected.

If I can help, please let me know.

So sorry to hear about your sizing problem! You must be so upset, especially with your timeframe. Maybe you can take up Boonrings' offer. Good luck!

Thanks Bruce...I have emailed AT to see what they say...and hopefully will hear back on Monday. If things don't look workable with them, I will definitely give you a call! They noted that they have to entirely re-make a ring rather than just re-size it, but you note re-sizing IS possible? Interesting!

When we had Willow Glen Jewelers check the size for us today, they used the tapered rod..should they not have done that? She noted that it was almost size 11....when we requested a 10.75 from AT. But we realized that maybe a 10.5 would be better.

It does depend on the amount it needs to be reduced. A quarter size is reasonable. Going further might need to be researched. If this was a custom ring, there would be nothing to lose by trying, as they could not resell it anyway. It's also pretty tough to reclaim the gold from it. I just had to remake a complex Twisted ring with a pink sapphire for a woman in Australia this week. I made a size 9 to her request, but it didn't fit. She sent it back with a ring that she knew fit, and it turned out to be a size 5.75. Oops.

The things about the tapered rod that get dicey is that first, they can be off a bit in dimension. The actual size depends on manufacturing tolerances and materials. One is easily off a quarter size from another. Another big factor is the width of the ring and where people interpret where to take the measurement from. The ring should be measured somewhere above where it first makes contact with the taper. Some people use the midpoint of the ring. Others might pick the bottom of the ring. You can imagine a wide ring like 15mm, and how the middle of the ring would be at a vastly different spot than the point where the taper makes contact. It would be pretty hard to nail down an accurate size. The tapered rod also doesn't take into account the internal radius. A ring with a sharper inside corner will not slide down as far as one with highly radiused internal edges. There can easily be a quarter size difference there. I have some tapered rods, and they do vary a bit from the *Standards* which are written in chart form. Even the standards are not that standard! The best way to nail the fit is to get a ring that you know fits and send that. The manufacturer should be able to match the internal diameter of the ring to within a couple thousandths of an inch. This is within the thickness of a piece of hair.

I'm with Boonerings on that sizing rod. It may get you in the ballpark; but, it's not that precise.

I learned from experience. I have my own & sized my own ring. I was off 1/2 size for my e-ring.

Mara, I hope things can work out in a timely fashion. If you aren't going any place where Greg could loose the ring, perhaps he can wear it around the house & see if he gets used to it. The last thing you want with a sleek ring like this is a smushed finger (too tight).

Or you could just feed him lots of potato chips.

What a great looking man's reing Mara! It's a shame about the sizing. I personally think ring sizing is close to rocket science -- it depends on the ring style. I have a ring that when I had it sized recently, they refered to that fact it is open under the stone, so maybe the skin moving under the open space is what is happening.

Wow, I bet he is very happy. It is such a masculine ring, and yet, with that ACA, it is certainly going to stand out. My fiance jokes that he wants the "flesh colored" ring from The Man Show. Ha ha. I bet you guys are getting really excited. The date is getting closer and closer!

Mara, I'm sorry the size is off. That must be so disappointing. The ring is very nice!

Mara, that ring is the most unusual man's ring I have ever seen. It is exactly what a one-of-a-kind guy would love. Truly a beautiful choice. (as is yours!) Congrats and best wishes, and please keep giving great advice here. We all truly appreciate your savvy, research, and spot-on observations.

Thanks Shay, Beansy, Lop, Patty and the others on the great comments. The ring truly is lovely.

Bruce...I mentioned to him about the potato chips as an option and he said that would work but then his BUTT would grow too, a non-desirable side effect! Hehe!

Stephan..I will be careful..don't want scratched stones on top of the ring sizing issue!

F&I...don't be getting any ideas trying to pawn off the MO jacket...I've already got my hands full!

Hoping to hear from AT tomorrow...

Okay well I talked to AT and they really want me to wait and see what we think about it after he has worn it a bit. COULD be an option but I also asked her to get me some other options, such as resizing or remaking, costs, timelines etc.

The vibe though is that they don't think that they can modify it in our short timeline and definitely can't make a new ring. They, of course, don't want anyone else touching it either.

So we'll see what she tells me tomorrow morning...I also asked them about temporary sizing options, what CAN be done for titanium and if so maybe this can get us from now until we return without being too much of a hassle...if we decide to remake the item.

What a hassle!!

Have you guys thought about getting a thin and simple gold band of smaller size that Greg can wear as a security guard? It won’t look bad because it'd be in accord with the gold stripe on the main band.
