Healthy Living Thread

Hi.

It was -7 when we got up. I wanted to stay in bed!

Dee Jay, one of those pear paw ice scraper sounds pretty sweet to me. It is COLD outside here (and probably there too). I did go ahead and file my taxes this morning. Luckily I got one more donation reminder in the mail and upped my return $25. Woo hoo! I am still contemplating doing my parents taxes but I’d have to see what options they have online for doing something for deceased people. I’ll worry about that later though. Based on the tax documents I see it doesn’t look too difficult. I will have to go check “Houzz” out. Doesn’t that figure you find exactly what you want but it’s stored in a warehouse on Mars? I would like to get another chair or swap out the love seat for a 2nd couch in our living room but Marty keeps telling me it would look bad. One wall is the TV with a corner that has an angled fireplace. The loveseat is on the outside wall. The kitchen, dining and living room is all one open area so the couch sets with it’s back to the kitchen island and the other side is just open for walking to our bedroom. We definitely want to replace the sliding glass doors with hinged French doors (in the wind here you can have them open on both sides). I would like a different refrigerator and dishwasher but they aren’t horrible and only about a year old so I can’t justify that cost. We need a few more TV’s. We mostly watch the TV in the living room but the other 3 are horrid. The man cave has Marty’s parents old TV – it is flat screen but a tube so it weighs more than the 3 of us ladies combined. The bedroom has a 26” computer monitor and the den has one of the original flat screens. I would like nicer carpet, the carpet we put in at our old house was awesome and I’d put the exact same thing in here. Our bedrooms and den has carpet. The moral to that story is make sure you get what you want the first time, huh? I’ll keep you in mind if I want someone smacked.

Deegee, Marty is a good guy. Yes, I think your Matt and my Marty are keepers and I indeed feel lucky to have him. It is funny to think of our parents having a life before their started their family. I think finding old notes is more precious than photos. I am sure we’ll find many more sentimental items as we clean out their house. Your city is definitely being used as lab rats and I can’t believe the CDC is saying it’s okay to drink the water when they really don’t know long-term effects. I watch quite a bit of news and I don’t think I heard about it on national news at all. I am sorry to hear you don’t like your hair cut. I am trying to get my layers opposite from what they are right now as well. How fun for Matt to be furnishing his office. That plane looks quite comfortable. I hope you don’t have trouble getting in and out of it with your back. Feel better! I don’t think we’ll ever be done doing things for our house.

As soon as I got out of the shower we drove our to my dad’s house to put out his garbage. It was sooooo cold out there! I had cereal for breakfast when we got back and I started a pot of homemade soup for lunch. I also made a single batch of chocolate chip cookies. Lunch we quite tasty.

I finally got my parents 3 checking / savings accounts set up online. I signed up for estatements on all 3 of them so that kind of information won’t be in their mailbox.

I cancelled my dad’s Tracfone and have a call in to social security. They should have called me back already. We’ll see how that goes. Marty wants to go to Bed, Bath and Beyond since his coffee pot isn’t working, good thing his espresso machine is okay! I have to go get the mail at my parent’s house and put the trash can back by the house. I want to stop and take pictures of the flowers at the mortuary and write down whom they are from. When my mom died they told us they would include very detailed descriptions of the flowers sent by each person – they were so detailed you couldn’t tell them apart. I had out of town relatives want to know what their flowers looked like and the best I could say was “they were pretty”.

I guess we’ll pick up some window food on the way home from our errands. My aunt and uncle are getting here tonight. They are staying at a hotel but will probably be over here tonight.

Take care. Stay warm!
Marcy

Dee*Jay- the chair Matt wants so badly is from a Scandinavian company called Ekornes. They are $2500 and up for one chair, but they are awesomely comfortable. They have a showroom at the custom furniture store where we get most of our furniture. It takes several months for these chairs to come in. I had considered a sectional from this company, but the wait time was nearly 4 months and we needed furniture BAD. And your walk commute looks pretty crappy. The pilots pulled the plane right up to the door today and cleared a path from the door to the plane steps. Talk about getting spoiled! Of course, I had to snap a picture.

Marcy-the refrigerator and dishwasher we had just replaced at our old house were nicer than the ones we have now, but we're like you...we can't really justify replacing them. We did looks at light fixtures for over the bathroom sinks, faucets, vanity tops, and a new shower door at Lowes and Home Depot over the weekend. It won't take much to update our bathroom. I'd love to replace the kitchen countertops, but there is nothing wrong with them. I just don't like them! After the master bath, I think I'm going to turn my attention to the fireplace. I am now addicted to the Houzz website Dee*Jay recommended! That's a good idea to take pictures of the flowers because people really do want to know what they looked like. I'll show up with Dee*Jay if you need anyone smacked around. I keep a miniature Louisville Slugger on my wall at work and am always having to threaten that I'll use it if needed! For some reason we're having a new wave of stink from the chemical. 3 schools had to dismiss early yesterday after students, teachers, and other staff started getting dizzy, throwing up, headaches, watering eyes...2 people were taken to the hospital by ambulance. 5 schools dismissed early today because the smell was overwhelming. But the water is safe. We keep forgetting that.

We had a safe, uneventful flight to Nashville and back. The pilots today remembered the last time they flew us I had the massive inner ear infection. They were so sweet to keep checking on me during that flight. I told them today my ear was fine today but my back hurt, so keep the takeoff and landing really smooth! I was kidding, but when we landed they made sure I was okay. I've been on that plane for 9 trips now. I don't want to fly commercial ever again! Food was bad. We were in an all day meeting, so they had sandwiches from a deli brought in for lunch. I had 1/2 brownie too. Yummmm. We went through a drive through on the way home from the airport so I had another sandwich. Tonight I am medicating with Disoronno over ice. I'm hoping it will numb my back and help me sleep. Good night!

Seriously....how spoiled is this? I'm standing inside the warm building looking out while the super nice pilot clears us a little path and throws down some salt.

That is very spoiled but also pretty darn cool!

Hi. Today is going to be a very long day for me.

Deegee, I can understand why you would never want to fly commercial again. With that kind of special attention and service you are being treated like a rock star or big politician. Cool! If the furniture from Scandinavia is really nice I guess waiting for a few months is not that bad. It’s amazing how much you can change the appearance of your bathrooms with new light fixtures, sinks, faucets, vanity and doors. I haven’t checked out Houzz yet because I know it will somehow, someway lead to me spending money but I am sure I will go take a peak. What do you want to do to your fireplace? I turned ours on last night. I’ll let you and Dee Jay know if I need some people smacked – I appreciate the support. How awful that another round of smell has appeared from the chemical spill. But “definitely don’t pay attention to the smell or fact that people are getting sick – the water is safe. “ Really? I am still amazed at how it appears the officials are in total denial about how bad it is. I hope your back feels better today.

We got up about 7 and went to Perkins for breakfast. Now we are just waiting.

It should be in the 30’s here today so that is going to be like a heat wave. Sadly the cold and snow will return tomorrow.

Laters,
Marcy

Hi. First I'd like to say the Houzz website could cost me a fortune. It is way cool though.

We have more cold and snow coming in tonight. Boo.

We met my aunt and uncle for breakfast, then had them follow us to the interstate to get out of town. I got about 30 thank you notes written and in the mail. We went out for lunch then went shopping to get some office / computer stuff, get a case for the flag from my my dad's casket and got groceries. I had Marty take me by the grave. I wasn't ready for that.

We had popcorn for supper and watched a movie.

Off to do dishes. The excitement never stops at M&Mland.

Marcy

Marcy-many, many hugs to you. Have your visitors all returned home? Flying on the private plane is really cool. No security, the plane leaves when everyone in your party has arrived, the pilots arrange for your transportation to meet you when you land, I could go on. And yes, I agree with your assessment of Houzz. That site is awesome! We'll blame Dee*Jay when we go broke. We have gray marble tile around the fireplace and on the hearth with a white mantle. I'd like to replace the gray tile and the (eek!) shiny brass trim on the tile. I'm thrilled that we only have a few cosmetic updates to do. Change out a few faucets and light fixtures, and we're good to go. You have a nice, new house and already are making changes! I guess we always see something we'd like to have done differently.

I have 2 of my nieces this weekend. We had Chili's for dinner and orange leaf for dessert. They wanted to go bowling. I can't bowl with my current back issue so I just watched. We came home and played xbox kinect sports for a few hours and I am now watching The Lorax with my niece who won't go to bed. We got some things for the house this weekend: new comforter set for a spare bedroom, blankets for the beds in the spare bedrooms, an office chair and bamboo chair mat for Matt's future office, and I ordered 2 rugs-1 giant one for the family room and 1 for Matt's future office. And the most important thing-a stainless steel, bottom load water cooler for the kitchen. We went to pier one and hobby lobby, but didn't get anything. It's 2am and my niece doesn't seem at all sleepy. This may be a long night.

It's snowing again. Argh! Marcy & Dee-Jay, I was telling Matt how funny it was walking around Nashville seeing the people so bundled up you could barely see their eyes. My group had on coats, but none of us had on gloves or scarves, and I think I was the only one who zipped my coat. It was 30 degrees, not too bad considering the below zero weather we've had. Then I thought you guys would be laughing at all of us as you ran by in your jogging shorts & tank tops. You're used to even colder than us! The kids went home today. They were really bummed when their mom texted that she was on her way. They live about 3 hours away now that we have moved. Matt and I went to Lowes to get more ideas, the grocery store, and then to eat. Tomorrow starts the end of this nonsense of eating whatever I want. I'm still taking medicine for my respiratory infection, but not a steroid. I can't blame that anymore for my pigging out! I need to get to bed early tonight. I sure didn't sleep much last night, but it was fun staying up with my niece.

Marcy-are you planning to go back to work tomorrow or will you take a little more time off? How are you?

Deegee, all of my family has gone home now. I am going back to work tomorrow. I think the break from the million things going on in my mind will be good for me. Flying on a private plane does sound pretty awesome. Maybe Dee Jay will get us gift certificates to Houzz for Christmas. You and Matt will have fun making some cosmetic changes to your new house to make it more “yours”. We did pick out everything for this house but some things had limited choices so we picked what we liked best at the time. It sounds like you had a nice weekend with your nieces. Nashville sounds like Phoenix – it cracks me up when it’s 60 out and everyone gets out their parkas. We are like “this is picnic weather”. It was about 10 here today with wind chill -5. We might be above freezing during the day most of this week though. I’ll be running around with my moon roof open to cool down. I am doing okay, thank you for asking. I had one good cry today but it was brief.

I slept in until 9. I was mostly awake at 6 but decided I didn’t want to face the world. Marty finally came in to wake me up because he thought I’d be so stiff from laying in bed that long that I’d hurt all day. Since I’d been tossing and turning since he got up at 6 I was fine. He went and bought us some breakfast sandwiches for breakfast. We had leftover soup for lunch then met some of my dad’s friends at his house for them to get stuff he wanted them to have. I stayed in the house because I didn’t think I wanted to watch.

After they were done my dad’s adopted son (as he called him) and his SO came in to visit us. She and I had a good cry. I had to pick out something of my mom’s as a sentimental piece to keep. She picked a crystal dish. She wanted to wait until my sister’s picked what they wanted and based on what I am hearing they and their families will be vultures this weekend so I wanted her to pick something now. This lady was a saint when my mom was in the hospital and hospice this summer so I really wanted her to have something.

Marty and I went out for Mexican food on the way home. I made lasagna when we got home so Marty can just put that in the oven tomorrow for supper.

Marty is going to take me to work tomorrow since the roads are still really icy.

Take care.
Marcy

Happy Monday kids!

Marcy, it is really lovely that you gave your mom’s friend the opportunity to have something that will remind her of your family. As for the weather; I’m so fvcking over this it’s not even funny! It’s currently 1 here. ONE. One is the loneliest number for a REASON. ONE. As for switching things out that are still “good,” I am a very bad influence in that regard! Don’t forget, Bill and I moved into a six year old townhouse and pretty much gutted it, LOL. The guy who demo’d our kitchen there took it and put it in his own house and was THRILLED to have it. But Princess wants what Princess wants… !

Deegee, I’ve got some serious plane envy going on! Even with “status” on United you’re still treated like a member of the cattle herd. And I love hearing about your nieces! Will you have water delivered for the cooler or do you have to pick it up? I’ve always wanted one of those! Not only does the water taste great but I take a peculiar delight in watching the giant bubbles blub up to the top – HA! I know what you mean about it seeming warm to you when everyone else is cold. If it ever hit 32 in this town we’d all be walking around in bikinis!!!

Demolition commenced in my new place this weekend! They got a TON done but they have to come back next weekend to finish getting up the tile in the bathroom and entry way, and also to throw a lot more stuff out. Even though there is quite a bit of construction debris still inside piled up (drywall, etc.) the dumpster was full. A THIRTY YARD DUMPSTER. FULL. And there’s still more to go. Yikes. I have a ton of pictures if you want me to post any. It’s pretty amazing.

The brick layer came out last night so I’m waiting for his quote, and I need to arrange for an electrician, drywaller, tile guy, and hardwood floor person. All before I move in on March 15. (Excuse me please while I have a drink… )

And I finally bit the bullet and decided to just get the damn second couch and go with the look I’ve always wanted. I was quoted $4,000+ for a chair the other day (so probably close to $4,600-$4,800) with tax and delivery. Suddenly $7,000ish for a second sofa seemed like a good deal. Excuse me please while I have a SECOND drink… )

OK, off do so some training!

Monday, Monday!

Deegee, I am right there with you on the temperature. We have winter until mid to late May too. Ugh. I think it is always fun to do some rennovations and redocorating. It's good to change things up as you go. I wish I had a "like" button for "But Princess wants what Princess wants . . .!" That made me laugh and smile. We are going to be above freezing all week so maybe some of this bikini weather will move your way. That is awesome demolition has started on your new place. They have 5 weeks to get it all done - no problem. We didn't think they'd have our house done even the last week but they made it before closing. Definitely post pictures. I would love to see the progress and what they are doing for you. I am excited for you to get your 2 couches. I think that layout sounds absolutely awesome. Have another drink - you'll feel better.

I went to work today. Marty brought me in since the roads are still icy. I made lasagna last night so he just have to put it in the oven for us for supper. I felt like I was out of work for months and it took me a few hours to get settled. I brought in Marty's old iPad 2 to use at work so I hope I'll enjoy that. If I find I use it a lot I might get myself a mini.

Take care.
Marcy

Marcy-please go get that ipad mini with retina display and then let me know how much more awesome it is than my ipad 2. I need a push. That was so sweet of you to let your dad's "adopted son"'s SO pick a sentimental piece. She will treasure it. I took one thing from each of my grandmother's houses when they passed away. I have a very old sewing chest from one and a teapot from the other. When our house was for sale, I had many offers for the sewing chest but it wasn't up for sale. I don't do antiques, but those two items are priceless to me. I'm picturing running around with the moonroof open. Ha! I'm not quite there yet, but it looks like we have 2 days above freezing this week. Woo-hoo!

Dee*Jay - holy cow! And I thought Matt's Scandanavian chair was expensive! I think the one he wants once it is sized for his height is around $3500. That boy just can't spend that kind of money on himself. (I plan to drag him back to that store to look at dining room furniture and I think he'll cave on the chair then.) The accent chair the designer recommended for the family room was 2/3 the cost of the custom made sectional...for an itty bitty chair! I couldn't go there. And yes - I LOVE looking at pictures!!! Post pics!!!!

I am expecting my rugs to be delivered this week and furniture for Matt's study next week, so I went to Lowe's to get temporary house numbers. Would you believe the former owners took the address plaque when they moved? There is no rhyme nor reason to the house numbering in our neighborhood either, so I bought the temporary stick on numbers for the brick post by the driveway. You'd think that I would have ordered a new plaque in the 8 months I have lived here. Nope. Dee*Jay will be enjoying her completely renovated & furnished awesome new home before I get around to ordering an address plaque. These things take time and thought... I did better with food today although I'd really like a snack. Matt took Lily for a walk but I didn't go. Too much ice on the road and I'm having rib/back issues. A friend stopped by last week to help him get the treadmill out of the garage and into the man room upstairs. Treadmills bother my knees, and I don't have knee problems. I need winter to be over. I feel so darn old!! Have a great day tomorrow!

Oh no - my earlier post has the wrong name. I am so out of it I had Deegee instead of Dee Jay! Sorry ladies!

Deegee and Dee Jay – I am obviously really with it since I answered Dee Jay earlier and called her Deegee. Wow, there must be lots of stuff on my mind.

Deegee, I don’t need much arm-twisting to go get an iPad mini with retina. I am pretty sure I’d like it. The iPad 2 is so slow compared to my iPad Air and I notice it is a little bit heavier. I was very pleased to give that guys SO something of my mom’s. She was always at the hospital with my parents last summer and after my mom was in a coma she sat there holding her hand talking to her for hours. That is awesome you have some treasures from both of your grandmothers. I was hoping the deep freeze would skip you but it sounds like it is coming your way. It looks like Atlanta is going to get another ice and snowstorm tomorrow. So both you and Matt don’t like to spend money on yourselves. Marty and I don’t have that positive trait. Hopefully you get the chair, a dining room table set and a new ring. See, I’m an enabler. That is quite weird the former owners took the house numbers plaque. It must have been some sentimental piece for them. I hope your ribs and back feel better. The treadmill sure bothers my knees. The roads are mostly dry now but sidewalks and parking lots are still glacier-like.

Marty and I didn’t communicate well on baking the lasagna. He did put it in the oven at 4 but put it on hold when he came to pick me up at work. It was finally done about 6:30. It was quite tasty though. I had tomato soup for lunch and was getting quite hungry this afternoon but decided to save room for lasagna.

Take care. Stay warm!

Marcy

Marcy-you ARE an enabler! I contacted Whiteflash earlier tonight. Eek! I have something in mind, but don't know if I will go through with it. Nothing exciting. I was thinking about upgrading my stone a smidge and putting it in a solitaire, and getting a diamond/sapphire band to go with it. You're probably right about the address plaque. They custom designed the house with an architect and were involved in every part of the build. I still talk to the guy on occasion, and you can hear the pride in his voice when he talks about the house. That guy's SO sounds like a dear to spend time with your mom while she was in a coma. I'm sure it helps to know she loved your mom and wanted to spend that time with her. Okay...now, go get that ipad mini!

Dee*Jay-I forgot to answer your question about the water. We'll be picking it up. It's very convenient though. You take your empty 5 gallon bottle to the store, they give you a recycle ticket for $7 off of your next bottle, and a new bottle will cost $6 with the discount. They have them at Walmart, Lowes, Kmart, Kroger, and I think Target. Since we seem to hit those up all the time anyway, I figure it will just be part of our weekly running around! I used bottled water to make spaghetti tonight, and it took a whole bunch of bottles to boil the noodles. Lily and the cats alone drink 6-8 bottles a day. We had to do something!

And there were federal hearings about our water issue today. No official will answer the question "Is the water safe?" My favorite answer was from the director of public health who said that it was hard to answer that question because everyone has a different definition of safe. There was another quote from someone at the chemical oversight board who said they couldn't answer because the chemical had never been studied on humans. Lab rats we are indeed!!!!

Deegee, I am so glad to be an enabler. And funny you mention a Whiteflash, I've been drooling over things on there too. I love my diamond in a solitaire and have never regretted moving to that style. It really makes the diamond stand out. A sapphire diamond band would be awesome with it too. Which styles are you considering?

Will write more later but was just excited at jewelry shopping. Of to work.

Happy Tuesday kids!

Marcy, you DO have a lot on your mind, so don’t even think twice about mixing up DeeGee and me. Plus, what are the chances that two people in a three person thread (for the most part!) would be named DeeGee and DeeJay?!? As for, “Princess wants what Princess wants,” that’s kind of my go-to explanation for when I choose to defy logic and go with something just because I WANT it. The poor CB has even taken to using that line when dealing with me – HA! And I think you totally deserve a sapphire band! Are you looking at anything specific at WF?

Deegee, I am just amazed (and not in a good way) about this whole water thing. Seriously, twenty years from now I wonder what the long-term effects of this will be. The cost of your water is very reasonable once everything is factored in! And I know what you mean about the cost of a chair compared to the cost of the couch. I had Montauk quote me a chair (different style from my couch, but still) and it was virtually as much as a second sofa! I will try to post some demo pics from my phone today because I seem to have better luck with that than posting them from my computer. Everything posts sideways though so I’ll have to rotate them.

Last night I took home five copy paper boxes from my office. I’ve got about a dozen of them now and I can probably accumulate several more a week, so maybe I won’t even have to buy boxes for this move. That would be great because they cost a fortune. Actually, everything about this project is costing a fortune. I’m keeping a spreadsheet (of course!) and frankly I get a little nauseas every time I look at it. Ack. I have also been considering selling my engagement diamond for a long time now and this just might be the thing that encourages me to do that. Honestly, I can’t imagine I’ll really wear it anymore and it could pay for the new kitchen, so why not? I also have my Todd Reed colored diamond ring, my eternity band, my sapphire diamond ring, my Rolex and my Cartier Roadster, and a pair of diamond earrings (that I’ve had on consignment at Erica Grace for about a year and a half now) that I also don’t wear, but I’m not really ready to jettison EVERYTHING right now. What do you ladies think—I would love some honest feedback on that idea because I haven’t told anyone else.

The dumpster--sumbitch was FULL long before we finished! Dumpster #2 coming this weekend!

_14811.jpg

Ok, I 100% give up! I've tried to do everything I can think of to post this picture the right way and I can't make it work! I'll try a demo pic, but if that doesn't work I am backing away from the computer...

Demo

Argh!!! This is infuriating! I will try uploading to the cloud and posting from there. What a PITA -- I *used* to be able to post upright!!!

Deegee, that is awesome the previous owner has so much pride in the house he designed. That makes the house more special. Yes, my dad’s friend SO is awesome. She is a really sweet lady. I am seriously contemplating a trip to the Simply Mac at our mall. I have been using my iPad 2 at work for 2 days now and have found it handy. I love taking notes on it in meetings instead of a notebook because then I don’t have to type up my notes later. You will certainly enjoy having a water cooler. I actually can imagine how many bottles of water it took to boil spaghetti. I used to use bottled water to cook and do dishes when we were camping. Wow, I can’t believe the answer “because everyone has a different definition of safe”. Lab rats indeed!

Dee Jay, thanks for understanding. Marty told me today he doesn’t want me to drive because he thinks I am having a hard time focusing on things. It sure doesn’t take much to get me irritated or to make me cry. It is pretty odd that out of the 3 of us 2 of you have very similar names. I did earn my Curby name tonight again – I got in to the curb at the drive through. I didn’t check to see if I scraped up my wheel yet. Too funny that CB has learned that what Princess wants Princess gets. I was pondering getting either a sapphire diamond band or 5 stone ring from WF. I know I would love either one of them. I want to get myself a special ring with some money I’ll get from my parents estate. There won’t be much in the end but probably enough to get a nice ring or 2. That is a tough decision to make whether to sell some of your jewelry to help pay for remodeling at your new place. If it were something I am not wearing and probably wouldn’t wear again then I would try to sell it. Pictures off my iPhone always post rotated from how they appear on my phone. I don’t know why either. We filled 2 dumpsters too when we moved. Yay for demolition beginning at your new place. That means remodeling is soon to follow.

Work was okay today. I only had a few meetings so got my work done by about 3. I picked up chili and waffle cones for supper so we had a quick supper. Our internet is flaky tonight. Rats.

Take care.

Marcy

Happy Wednesday kids!

Curby, we need to get you those things they put on semi trucks to alert the driver when they are close to something. Of course, by the time they realize they are close to something (like a VW bug!) it may be too late, LOL! I think getting a piece of jewelry to honor your parents is such a lovely idea. What were their birthstones? And when I first read your post I was like, Marcy and Marty are eating chili out of waffle cones for dinner… wha??? HA!

I have no idea what my issue is with posting pics. I’ve seen several threads on this in recent history so maybe I need to go back and read one of them to see what I’m doing wrong. SOOOOO irritating!

And guess who sold The Brick yesterday! It all happened so fast, but here are the general details. I used the “sell my diamond” function on PS and was contacted immediately by someone who gave me a range of what I could reasonably expect for the piece. He then told me I could ship my piece to him, or since I was in Chicago, I could go to one of his contacts here (CD Peacock – not sure if you guys have heard of them? They are an “old school” jewelry store that I’ve seen some really nice things in over the years). So I talked with the lady at CDP and set up and appointment for Saturday. There is another place here in town that specializes in buying estate and other high-end jewelry and I called them on a lark. Well they said to come on in! I went there yesterday afternoon and ended up leaving with a check with the top number that the PS guy said I could reasonably expect. I was a bit worried that it was “too easy” and I wondered if I had left a lot of money on the table by not going to the CDP lady, but when I was literally depositing the check she called me and asked me to fax a copy of the GIA report and I told her I had an offer of $X on the table. She flat out said TAKE IT. She was very up-front that she wouldn’t be able to get to that number, and I really appreciate her honesty and not wasting my time (or hers). So I feel better about it. In terms of numbers, I either got 70% of the whole ring (they wanted the mounting too) or I got 87.5% of my diamond back and threw the mounting in for free. Regardless, I walked away with far more than I ever thought I’d get for the thing (given that conventional wisdom is you get about 50% of what you paid for a stone), and more importantly than the money (HELLO NEW KITCHEN!), I am “unburdened” of the thing. Deegee, I can’t remember if you were around when I got The Brick, but I’m pretty sure Marcy was, and if you look back at my thread on it you will know I never loved it. Sad, but true. And now it’s not my problem anymore! Not to mention I pay over $1,000 a year in insurance on that item alone. I love Travelers, but they really get you on the premiums. Whew! Sorry for the novel on all that but I had to tell someone – and you lucky ladies were it!

Marcy-Did I tell you about the new computer I have for work? It's an HP Revolve 810, which is a tablet PC. The screen flips around and lies flat, like a tablet. Or you can use it like a laptop. I LOVE it! It's fast too, and pretty lightweight. They got it for me since I will be attending tons of design meetings and going back and forth between our offsite location and our in-house project office. You're pondering a sapphire/diamond band too? I love those! I want a very simple setting, like the WF contemporary solitaire or the Vatche U113 (I think). I keep trying to convince myself that a 2ct diamond wouldn't be too flashy, but I really think I'd be self conscious about it. My upgrade probably won't be a whole lot bigger than what I already have! There is a band on the BGD site that I really like - sapphires and marquise diamonds. My dad's new car beeps at him when he is getting too close to something either in the front or back. He ended up turning that feature off because he thought it was a little too sensitive. Years ago when I got my first Infiniti, I hit the curb and conveniently forgot to mention it to Matt. A few days later he came in and said, "curbed it, did ya?" I didn't think it was that noticable!

Dee*Jay-the former owners of our house may have taken the address plaque, but they did leave us a bunch of very nice boxes they had purchased from UPS so we could use them for our move. Those things cost a ton, I'm sure! Our IT guy at work knew I was moving and saved me awesome boxes with handles from a shipment of 20 desktop pc's. I actually do kind of remember "the brick." I destroyed my original ering in November '06 in an accident (broke my wrist too). I didn't join PS until 2007, but I lurked for a while. I remember thinking "holy cow!" when I saw your ring. I didn't know you never loved it so congrats on getting it sold so fast! I've got to figure out how to do that "what princess wants..." thing.

We went out with friends last night for Thai food. I must have had way too much to drink because I sure fell asleep fast when I got home! That was the first time I had ever been to that type of restaurant, but several of the people in our group had been there before and helped me figure out what to order. Matt is tutoring tonight so I had leftover Thai food for dinner. My new rug for the family room was delivered yesterday and I love it! It's a 9.5 x 12.5 shag rug called "blended brown". Just like it sounds, it has lots of varying shades of beige/brown. Now that it is on the floor, I can focus on accent stuff and accessories. I have a brown rug, beige sectional, dark brown entertainment center & drum table, and the pillows on my sectional are sage/blue/brown. I need a bright "pop" color - persimmon? yellow? I need to shop. And that darn Houzz site...I have all kinds of fireplace ideas saved. I'm actually getting excited to get some things done. I usually put that stuff waaaay the heck off! Have a great evening!

Hi.

Dee Jay, I do have front and rear sensors on my car but I obviously need them on my tires and wheels. Chili out of waffle cones – ha! That would be interesting. Congratulations on selling the brick locally and how wonderful to get that high of a price for it. That is pretty amazing. Now you can go crazy on your new kitchen. More new stuff for Princess. Lately I trade in my jewelry from something new but most of the pieces I’ve just sold I usually took quite a loss on them; of course they were all under $500 (most under $100) to begin with. My mom and dad were both born in November so their birthstone is smoky topaz or citrine. I am definitely leaning towards a ring but today I had this “brilliant” idea of some ideal cut diamond studs. The ones I have are quite nice but they are not AGS0 by any means. Of course no one on the earth would know I have earrings on because my hair always covers them up. Can I pick your CPA / H&R Block brain? I looked over my parents 2012 tax return and I don’t see why I can’t do their 2013 myself. They have 1099-R, some 1099, property taxes and county fees on license plates. Since they are both deceased and there isn’t anything really to do long form I think it would be pretty easy. What do you think?

Deegee, I think you mentioned your work computer before. I am glad you like it so well. Our IT has been giving out something like that for laptops but my laptop is new and very nice so I won’t be getting one for a while. I think the ones my company bought are pretty cheap so they hang up on some things. Yes, I would love a diamond sapphire band. I tried one as an anniversary band but I think I’d rather have a larger one as a RHR. Probably a 5 stone ring with about 1.5 to 2 ctw. I love the Vatche U113 setting. It is very classy looking. You would probably get used to a 2 carat solitaire but it would seem big at first. Mine is only a 1 carat and I toyed with going up to 1.25 or 1.5 carats but I would be way to self conscious with something that large. I did see that ring on BGD and it looks beautiful. LOL at “curbed it, did ya?” Too funny you mentioned trying to use what princess wants – I was contemplating the same thing. Good thing Dee Jay is getting a big new place; we might have to come “stay” with her for a while if our princess bit doesn’t work out for us. Woo hoo for getting your area rug and that it is inspiring you to get accent stuff and accessories. I haven’t been back to Houzz yet but I sure keep thinking about it. There are so many great accent colors that would go with your browns.

We were very busy at work today. I was pretty distracted again so didn’t get my stuff done until later this afternoon. Some less experienced team members were watching out group emails and missed a couple things that ended up causing me to scramble at the last minute. Being emotional and irritable right now I told them “the moral to this story is if something comes in our email you don’t know what to do with it you need to ask” and of course one of them got all defensive about it. Grr. I wasn’t even nasty about it. Sigh.

I shed some tears this afternoon. I emailed one sister and talked to another one about our meeting Saturday. It’s to see what people want out of the house. I am afraid it is going to be a brawl or a bunch of vultures. One sister is already complaining about the other one can’t take out things of value but she quickly pointed out she will be in the garage with the son-in-laws dividing up the tools. The tools are probably worth more than anything in the house. She wants to have everything auctioned. I was leaning towards everyone take as much as possible and then give the remaining stuff to meals on wheels. If the estate goes over $200,000 it can’t go through short term probate. I have no idea what the house will sell for and we want to sell it as is not put a lot of money in to but with that, selling the truck and what cash he has we are already over that mark anyway.

The reason my parents listed me as the “judge” and that I have final say is that I am the only reasonable one of us 3 girls. Sigh.

Laters.

Just a fly-by to answer your question Marcy about filing your dad's tax return. Yes, you should be able to do it pretty easily. If you do it using software you will enter a date of death where prompted and that will appropriately code the return. If you filing on paper you'll write "DECEASED" at the top of the form 1040 (or whatever form is used). You'll also likely need at Form 1310 so that you can sign the form on the decedent's behalf. Here is the IRS publication that explains all this:

http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p559.pdf

But this can be a little overwhelming so don't look at it if you don't want to, just ask and I'll help you in any way I can. You can also either (a) call the software provider with questions (so if you use H&R Block software there is an 800 number you can call for advice, or TurboTax, or whoever). You can also call the IRS and believe it or not they are generally very helpful. BUT the closer we get to April 15 the longer the wait times are. Finally, you can have an accountant do it, but really it would probably be more money than it's worth unless there is anything really complex going on.

Let me know how I can help!

OK, back to tax land! I'll post more later!

ETA: I can't give you any state advice though because my "expertise" (if you can call it that!) applies to Illinois only.

Marcy-I hope everything goes okay this weekend. People do turn into vultures when dividing stuff up. Mom was upset when grandmother died that one of her sisters swooped in and took almost all of the furniture and anything of any value before anyone else had gotten there. There was one piece that was special to mom and the only thing she wanted, but it was gone before she even got there. Seems like that tends to happen. I don't wear much jewelry so I think a 2 ct solitaire might be too much for me to get used to! And on this forum, 2ct seems to be a small stone!! I have a 1.32 H SI1 right now and I was just thinking of a 1.5-1.6 G VS1 or VS2. Not a huge difference but I think it would suit me. I have a 1ct 5-stone HOF band that I absolutely love. I was supposed to pick something out for my 5 year anniversary (which was many years ago). After my 6th anniversary passed and I hadn't picked anything out, Matt bought the HOF band for me all by himself. It's both pretty and sentimental. You can never go wrong with a 5-stone band! And I don't get why people don't take a little initiative at work. If you don't understand...ask!!!

Hi Dee*Jay!

I checked the weather last night before bed and we were only supposed to get rain. Our region woke up this morning to a very unexpected 10 inches of snow. Nobody was ready! Parts of the state have 20 plus, so I guess we're lucky. But did I mention before that I live in the mountains, and there is a very steep, curvy hill to get into my neighborhood? Yeah...not so good with 10 inches of snow. Matt started to take me to work. We slid out of the neighborhood and onto the small curvy road which takes you to the main road. When we got to the main road, I got a text from work telling me to stay home. We got back on the small road and then nearly didn't make it back up the hill into the neighborhood...in a big, heavy 4WD SUV. Apparently there were lots of stranded vehicles on the road I take to work so I'm glad we got back home. We made chili and grilled cheese sandwiches for dinner, an I've been parked in front of the fire all day. Lily and I did get out and walk up the hill to the next house, and then the road gets really steep. There are 3 more houses up there and I don't see how in the world the people get down in the snow and ice. Yuck! But I did notice that my back yard would be excellent for sleigh riding. Have a great day tomorrow!

Looking across the street from our porch. I live in the sticks!

We're the first house going up the steepest hill in the neighborhood. See poor Matt out there shoveling? I didn't make it all the way to the bottom of the hill to take the pic.

Dee Jay, thank you for the information and suggestions. I will probably use H&R Block online and see how I do. I don’t think you have to pay for it until you file. I know Turbo Tax works that way anyway. Our state does not require we pay state taxes. They get us with fees on everything we touch, buy or see. How is demolition going?

Deegee, I love your winter wonderland pictures. Poor Matt has a lot of snow to shovel. Your house is very pretty. I can imagine getting up and down the hill there is a daunting task on snowy, icy roads. I hear so many stories like your mom’s where the kids just want one or two pieces and the "vultures" sweep in and take everything they can. I just don’t get it either. I think going up a smidge with your diamond would be something you enjoy. When I went from ¾ ct to 1 ct probably no one in the world noticed it but I liked it better. My biggest reason for the change was I had a 1/2 carat AGS0, the ¾ was a GIA EX and I never liked it as well so I wanted another AGS0 and the 1 carat was the only they had that I liked. I have very small sized jewelry compared to most people on PS but that is the size I prefer on me. The 5 stone HOF rings are gorgeous. That is the kind of band I think I would really like maybe with a few sapphires. I remember when Matt surprised you with that ring, and getting a nice surprise like that makes it extra special. I have a sapphire diamond band that is not the best quality stones but I wear it a lot. It has little diamond chips in the shape of a heart and each of them has a blue sapphire in the middle. Oh and tell Matt he missed a spot of snow on the driveway.

I just deleted a paragraph I typed up venting about my sister but I felt better just typing it. I am going to be drinking on Saturday night.

Laters. :wavey:
