normaly only the tourmaline which has very deep color is heated to make more bright or pleasant color. its the normal heating process in a small furnace.its a trial and error method. some time if you heat very deep color(almost brown) tourmaline for long time it can turn into white.

Hello Jai. Welcome to Pricescope. I can tell you know what you''re talking about, and your input is appreciated.

Hi Colorchange:

Heat can enhance the color of some tourmalines but is undetectable like Edward mentions. Treatments can include heat and irradiation. Tourmaline can also be oiled to mask flaws and fractures in the gem in a similiar fashion to the way emeralds are oiled to enhance their appearance.

Some greenish stones can be made deep green, some brownish-red stones can be made red, and some light pink stones can be made colorless through heating. The color of some light colored stones can also be made into a deeper hue, and dark, transparent dravite can be made lighter .

Dravite is brown in color, and is rarely transparent enough to be used as a gem. However, transparent stones, when found, are often cut as gems. They can be heat-treated to lighten their dark color which might suit the gem for jewelry use after being heat-treated.

In any case I think heating is used to help bring out some of the best qualities in fine gemstones.
