Help… choosing between two amazing OMCs

The right one jumped out at me first.

ETA plus it looks a lot bigger despite being of similar weight haha.

The right stone does seem a lot bigger, which is great in theory! I do have a little hesitation going that big on my size 5 finger but I’m sure I’ll get used to it

Another vote for the one on the right. There is something around the outline of the table on the left one that I don’t care for (are there inclusions there? Maybe it’s the faceting? I can’t tell from the pic).

Yes the facets I believe.

You will get used to the size of a stone that looks “too large”. I like both stones. L for the height of the crown (I personally like the chunky dimensionality), and Right for the spread, the color/fire and the larger appearing facets. In terms of true antiques, one of the only ways to tell is to look at the girdle. Antique old mine or cushion cuts usually have unpolished and un-faceted girdles and indented naturals, flea bites, etc. The girdle on my Old Mine cushion is razor thin in some places and bruted in others. It’s very irregular. Fakers cannot easily do an antique looking girdle and it’s likely not a selling point either. Sometimes on true antique stones some of the facet junctions are very slightly worn, creating more definition to the facets. Usually vendors know not to re-polish or touch up antique stones before they sell them, so to me, any “antique” stone with a polished or bruted but uniform girdle is suspect. That’s just my opinion. This doesn’t mean I wouldn’t want to buy them, but it does mean they might not have the cachet of a real antique which is a very hard thing to find in large diamonds nowadays. My personal opinion is that there are many large old cut diamonds that are purported to be antique that are not, nowadays, starting about five ish years ago.

I prefer the diamond on the right

Thank you. Do you think the stone on the right is not a true antique?

It’s hard to tell and I’m not an expert, but what does the girdle look like?

+1 RE girdle.
faceted usually means either cleaned up or a newly cut stone

Hmm interesting! Both diamonds’ GIA reports have “faceted” written in the girdle description.

True antiques typically didn't have faceted girdles - that combined with the impressive symmetry and angles makes me think it's either modern cut or a cleaned-up antique

I agree with the symmetry being impressive. I was surprised to see that its GIA cert has symmetry at just “good”

I believe a lot of times chips are being cleaned up to improve clarity... with a bunch of chips in the girdle those wouldn't have been VS2

But again to LightBright's point, those faceted girdle now make you question if it's a true antuque or not. Some vendors should know better before touching antique stones...

"very good polish" and "faceted girdles" usually make me question the actual age of the stone

Another vote for the right based on pics. But I would just go with whatever attracts you more in real life!

I'm the lone outlier in that I prefer the left!
*record scratch*
I like the wonkiness of an antique cut. The right is more aesthetically pleasing all around, it's almost too 'perfect' with it's light return, looking like a newly cut antique to me. It depends on what you're after. The right has more perfection, but the left has my wonkified heart.

Not a thing wrong with a little rehab done on old stones with chips. The right stone just seems better in all respects. A J is so much whiter than an L, but it still has a little ivory to give that antique feel. What matters most is that you love the diamond. I'd just be sure I was paying a fair price regardless of how old they are.

I totally understand! I was in love with the one on the left when I first saw it. I’m really going back and forth. I definitely don’t want a diamond that looks too perfect. I love a bit of character.

What is the polish and symmetry rating of the stone on the right?

Polish “very good” and symmetry “good”
Same ratings on both stones, actually

Ummm...I'm not an expert but it seems like these are both antique stones that have been cleaned up (I just looked at my oec cert and my stone was rated good for both polish and symmetry).

ETA, my theory is that the J/VS is an antique. With a 5+ carat stone, it just seems like it would be a risk to cut J/VS rough into an OMC this large when a modern cut 5+ carat stone would sell quicker. BUT this is just my theory.

 Honestly, you can't go wrong. Your eyeballs and heart will tell you. You couldn't have a more wonderful dilemma. Your choices are between fabulous, and fabulous. No matter what you choose it's going to be a spectacular ring. I'm so excited for you!

Maybe I’m alone in this, but they both look like true antiques that have had a little girdle clean up to me. Not a surprise given the large sizes, I’m sure their original owners wore them often (as would I :))).
