Help… choosing between two amazing OMCs

Who is the vendor? (only say If those stones are on hold for you - avoid snipers!) just wondering if anyone knows them and their expertise regarding new vs cleaned up vs true antique.

Both are super reputable antique experts as far as I can tell per reviews here

This pic has me leaning a tiny bit to the one on the left, though I’ve strongly preferred the one on the right in all pics so far! It’s a great pic of the one on the left :)

But overall I still plumb for the one on the right. In all other pics (including the other one in the same post) and the video it stands out to me. Can’t wait to see what you decide!

Would you please share what you like about the one in the left in this pic? It might help me articulate what I’m liking about it too. Thank you!

It’s so hard to capture in photos what you are seeing with your eyes irl. From the photos, there is something about the center facets of the stone on the left that *I‘m* not drawn to. Maybe it’s just how it photographs. What are your eyes telling you? Do you prefer the color, shape, size, faceting better on one vs the other? Your eyes are the eyes that matter!
I can’t wait to see which one you choose

The one on the left feels more antique'y... wonky and unique.

The one on the right is whiter and brighter.

What makes you seek an antique diamond in the first place? Obviously not their performance... since there are so many better performing stones out there. Is it their uniqueness and history?

Which stone speaks to you more? In this case you are not judging their angles and fire, but your emotional response to your stone

Lefty, oooh yep, wonky for me.
I love the slightly disordered faceting and the larger culet. The contrast between facets is very interesting to me. The puffy crown is something I prefer. I am drawn to the imperfection. It's active in it's own unique way.
What are you feeling about these stones? Do an instant gut check. I'm sure your gut is telling you what you need to know, follow it.
There really is no wrong choice. There is only your choice!

Yes there are some darker flashes in the center facets of the one on the left. They aren’t so dark in real life but I do see them. The facets are also slightly smaller overall on the left vs chunkier on the right. I love large chunky facets, but somehow the smaller facets on the left give me more of an authentic antique feel. The left is very slightly warmer to my eye as well of course as it’s an L vs the J. The stone on the right feels almost too perfect, but then I feel silly for thinking that! It’s also larger, so I’m a little overwhelmed by its finger coverage for me. I realize that would change in time however.

Yes I love all those things too! I forgot to mention I also prefer the larger cullet on the left. I think if the right at least had a larger cullet it would be a slam dunk for me.

If that really is the decider; you could ask the vendor about it, maybe they know a cutter who could just open up the culet a little bit. It can't hurt to ask about it.

Would you be willing to share the percentage price difference between the two?
Not sure if price is a determining factor for you - but really I’m just curious.

If you like both - you can’t go wrong in your choice.
If your heart truly wants a mixture of aspects of the two - keep looking. Don’t settle.

Edited to add
Also- regarding finger coverage. Is the stone in a holder noticeably higher off your finger than the other set in a ring? Could that extra height be exaggerating perception of finger coverage?

Price - the stone on the right is about 18% more

And yes, it is in a ring holder so it definitely appears even larger on a finger now. It’s a bit larger in actual dimensions as well:

The 5.5 L is 11.08x9.91x6.90 69.6% depth
The 5.4 J is 11.52x10.43x6.93 66.4% depth

Maybe try evaluating the stones separately in different lighting environments?

The one on the right gets my vote!

The one on the right is absolutely beautiful, but go with what you love!

I'm in love with the one on the left! Like you, I also prefer larger visible culets on antique cuts - there's something about it that just "makes" an OMC, for me. The depth and puffy crown also appeal to me. I could tell straight from the first photo that the left one is much deeper, and got excited right away haha. The way I see it, deeper old cuts are wonderful as they tend to allow the diamonds to show more "water", if that makes sense. In addition to sparkles, they also have shimmer and glow. The 18th century phrase "diamonds of the first water" never made much sense to me until I got into antique cuts and saw indeed how romantic they were. And now I'm hooked on that particular look because you just don't see it every day.

The one on the right is definitely also lovely and I feel it appeals a bit more to modern sensibilities. I feel I would admire it on someone else but it would leave me somewhat unfulfilled if it were mine.

So I guess as others have said, both are very pretty, it all depends on which style calls out to you more and which feels more "you". Looking forward to what your decide on! Such a gorgeous size!

I have to be the dissenting vote but I honestly love the one on the left (my left on the screen). The right is nice and bigger and has a shallower depth but the left actually has that antique "look", especially with that more pronounced "dot culet". Where as the right I hate to say but may look more like a sloppy modern cut imitating antique. It also looks a bit... flat? I dont know if thats the right word but I see "life" in the left diamond, the right not so much. Either choice though would look fantastic, at that size who really cares right? They both look beautiful on your finger! Take my non-professional, visual appearance only opinion as you will.

I like the left from the beginning - but I have no idea why (ha-ha!) & confirmed after the hand-shot picture above. Leftie gets my vote!

I liked the stone on the right until I watched the video. Four times. I love the high crown and depth of the left one, it looks less perfect and more authentically antique. And in the most recent photo above, it kinda kicks butt.

Left for me even though it doesn't have the perfection of the right. There's that something about true antiques that appeals more to me. I think perhaps it has more contrast? Not sure how to verbalize it.

Hi everyone! I want to say thank you so much for all of your input. This was such a difficult decision albeit one I know I’m very lucky to have to make. I finally chose the one on the right. Although it was borderline “too perfect,” its beautiful shape, brightness and most of all its gorgeous flashes of pastel light really won me over. I’ll miss the antique charm of the one on the left but couldn’t pass up the one on the right. I am going to see if my vendor can open the cullet a tiny bit to give me a bit more of that charm I’m missing.

Now that I’ve made the decision on the stone, I need help on the setting! Right now I’m thinking yellow gold shank, possibly two to three tiny stones of some kind on the shoulders, set low with 4-6 platinum prongs. I would greatly appreciate any other opinions on how to set this beauty! Thank you!

This is so exciting! Such a gorgeous stone! I can’t wait to see it set and on your finger!

BTW Your avatar photo melts my heart :kiss2:

Wonderful wonderful, I had been dying to hear your decision! I kept coming back to ogle over both of them.

The 5.4 J that you've chosen is absolutely stunning and I agree impossible to pass up. It's hard to find OMCs with this level of extra blingy-ness, and the more I look at it, the more I can't help envisioning how spectacular it'll be in the right setting. And the spread will lend itself to the low setting that you're considering as well.

I just snagged a 1/2 ct little OMC similar to the deep proportions and colour of the 5.5 L for a fun project myself this week and absolutely adore it, but your comparison of these two stones is definitely inspiring me to be more open-minded to spreadier old cuts in the future.

Do you have in mind where to you'd like to have your ring made? Looking forward to seeing it come together!

At first, I was all the one on the right bc of its chunky facets. Then I saw the video and that made it much harder to decide. The left has a "puffier" look and I am drawn to its slightly more rectangular shape. But those pastel flashes from the right still catch my eye. And I'm about that spread...(size ho!) This is not an easy choice but
I'm glad you finally chose one! You wouldn't have gone wrong with either one.
