Help bought this Sapphire but has a window!

Hi Bluemuse,

Your ring is stunning. I love the colour of the sapphire. How many carat is it?
Thanks for sharing. I also have an Aquamarine that is Vintage style and it has a massive window but it’s very clean with no inclusions.
Here’s a photo!

Sure, I’m happy to share.
The first two show the window and the last one shows what I see when the ring is on and I look face down. Somehow the inclusions and the light conspire so that I see primarily color and not a window. I think with your ring you should be seeing mostly beautiful color.. with a small window, yes.
It appears to have good brilliance overall. Does it also brighten in the sun?
That aspect can vary stone to stone. Mine is not a sparkly type sapphire which would be a deficit for some, though it does have nice luster.
A small window may be a trade off for a lot of other pluses, especially size and price.
By today’s precision cut standards mine would be in the reject pile. As I said, I accept it with its unique attributes and greatly appreciate it as is.

Wow! That is beautiful and glamorous too! The setting is substantial and the side stones look amazing!
It must be fun to wear. I love the color of the aqua. Such a pretty shade of blue green in the sun.
I think it’s fairly common for aquas to have windows. I have an aqua that’s a bit pale so I don’t find I wear it very much. I think I’d prefer a brighter color like yours.
Thank you for the kind words about my ring. It’s 8cts and an antique stone of Ceylon origin. It’s unheated which is why it has so many inclusions. It came from a Victorian brooch originally and was set in an old Georgian setting. Learning about gems and playing with them is fun, isn’t it?
And very good medicine for our current shaky times. I find them to be calming and grounding.

Thanks so much. I paid a pretty good price for the Aqua also. Wow 8ct is massive. I can’t imagine what you paid for an 8ct!

I think I will leave my Sapphire as is and enjoy the Vintage feel it gives off. It’s a very good mounting and if I would lose size of the Sapphire to remove the window and then pay thousands for a new setting....it’s just not worth the risk. My window looks kind of strange in comparison to other windows. As you closely inspect you can see at 12 o’clock that the window goes up in a vertical stripe up to outer edge. Not sure why that’s happening? I have marked it out on the next photo!1E05A633-35BE-4126-A979-363C43B475E8.jpeg
I haven’t seen the Sapphire ring in person yet so fingers crossed I love it ha ha.

I’m not surprised you paid a significant amount for your aqua. It looks exceptional.

I hope you love the ring when you get it.
If for some reason you have pangs of doubt when you get it there are always work arounds as discussed, but I don’t think that’ll happen. You should definitely live with it and get to know it for a while before making any potential changes in any case.

The shape of the window has to do with the faceting on the underside of the stone.
Sometimes it’s somewhat off kilter. It’s not uncommon in non precision cut stones.

Finding a large stone with a color that is special like yours isn’t easy. Hopefully the “window” that you’re seeing in the photos won’t be something you notice when you’re wearing it and you can just enjoy that luscious violet blue color.
The setting is super pretty and a beautiful complement to the stone. Fingers crossed you love it!

I don’t recall if you mentioned earlier in the thread if it was heat treated.

Can’t wait to see photos when it arrives.
It will be fun to see how it behaves in various lighting conditions.

You haven’t seen it in person?!

truly I think you’re letting the perfectionists of this forum get to your head.itll be lovely and I bet it won’t need anything.

You know the one big retreat i have is not that i have a ring with a window, its rather that i learnt what a window is and i mean no disrespect to PS and all the lovelly people here (well except the poster who called my grandma's depression era ER sweet meaning it was small) but i adored my topaz ring until i came here :(2
And it cost way less that Your ring
Your ring is so beautiful and its from a time when windows were not seen as a detection
Wear it for a while as is before you do anything

Thank you so much Daisys and Diamonds. Yes you are right. I didn’t even notice the window until I started lurking on Pricescope about sapphires and read a post about someone buying one with a window and that it was not ideal. I felt like I wasted my money then and there. Ha ha!
I searched on 1st Dibs for sapphire rings and found most had windows and wanted premium prices $30k plus! Now I didn’t feel so bad! I will just leave it as is.

This is one of my favorite sapphire threads.

This is one of my favorite sapphire threads.

I love this one as well! Such a wonderful story and ring. The heart knows what it wants!

@Horsegirl76 Thank you—I’m incredibly flattered and touched by your compliments. Thank you to @Bluemuse (and shoutout to your lovely Elena!) and @Daisys and Diamonds as well!

@Aussiewen I think perhaps I humbly hold the PS title as the “queen of windows” aka proud owner of one of the biggest windowed pieces on PS.

Beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder. PS is a GREAT forum to educate folks re gems and I’m so grateful for all the teaching I received, but ultimately my fiancé and I ended up buying with the goal of pleasing ourselves. Sure, I suppose we overpaid perhaps when examining the nitty gritty (aka windowed sapphire, non ideal trade color, all the things we love to discuss here on PS), but if overpaying in monetary terms means I get to enjoy every day a piece that truly speaks to me despite its “flaws”, then I think I got my money’s worth after all.

Everyone’s different at the end of the day. Some folks here just hate windows and that’s perfectly ok, while others can overlook it. I’m even going to put myself at the expense of ridicule and say that I tried to and just don’t like precision cuts. They are too perfect looking for me, if that’s even a thing, almost mechanical/clinical.

Not advocating for windows here per se. Like you, I doubted my own taste for a while after, and even briefly considered recutting my windowed sapphire —gasp! Before I came to my senses thankfully: just saying that asymmetry and flaws even can be tolerated by some if overall the piece is otherwise pleasing.

Bottom line: If you buy with the goal of pleasing yourself, and not break the bank in the process, you’ll never go wrong. Enjoy your ring!

Also I will say not all windows are alike.

If I may borrow the avatar photo of @Bluemuse. Her sapphire has a window but the stone is so, so gorgeous in its color and shape. The window here to me is certainly no flaw, just part of the stone’s personality.

Vs a stock image of a windowed gem on google where in my humble knowledge (and other PSers please jump in and correct me if I’m wrong!) the sole purpose of this window is perhaps to retain face up value or to make use of an otherwise very shallow stone, and not to contribute to aesthetics overall (ie to enhance color, etc)

Thank you very much @Pinkmartini87!
So nice of you to say:)

We are of the same mind when it comes to loving some antique stones for their overriding beauty in spite of apparent flaws.

And I think you’re correct that some stones are left with windows after cutting bc they were cut to retain as much weight as possible.

From your example i am going to make a bigger effort to love my topaz again - at least until i replace it with a lightbox mmd

You have a beautiful ring bought at an amazing price - I’m positive it’s going to bring you many many years of happiness gazing at its beauty!
My sapphire has a window that I never would have noticed had I not discovered PS - but (and it’s a big but!) I never would of gotten to understand all of it’s unique characterisations (that I thought were imperfections and faults) that makes it really unique and beautiful. It’s beauty is in its imperfection.
Mine is too big to be put in a ring as much as I would love to gaze at it on my hand everyday like @Bluemuse.

I honestly love your ring and wouldn’t touch it other then lovingly cleaning it because I would wear it everyday - lol

Sorry I was trying to read your valuation on my phone screen - do you know if it’s been treated?

@Daisys and Diamonds oooh, have we seen the topaz before? Would love a photo if it’s not too much trouble! Perhaps it deserves its own thread to properly shine?

@Aussiewen sorry for our thread hijack!

Thank you for asking
Its a ring i brought prePS from trade me (NZs ebay) i got it for $750
It was sold on behalf of an insurance company.- i beleave it was lost somehow, paid out and then recovered
The prevouse owner has replaced the center diamond with a topaz

I was quoted 4K for a replacement diamond from the mall jewler it came from when i had it resized
I never had any interest in topaz till i brought it and now i kinda love them
I know its just a mall jewler ring but i love it and i like the size, i have made some good and some terrible purchases on trade me but this is one of the best

I love princess cuts
Im thinking of getting one of those lightbox pendants for a centre diamond and then make the topaz into a pendent because i still love it

I will make a thread when i have the finances

Today i hardly mind the window and that's thanks to this thread ! So this isnt too much of a tangent we have gone off on !

The gallary is another matter :lol-2:

@Daisys and Diamonds Many thanks for taking the time to share! I’m very fond of your topaz! I love the delicate, bright/optimistic hue of the light blue. I’m also partial to square(princess)/emerald cuts. I love the sharp geometry of the cut contrasting with the softness of the color. What a joyful little gem! Reminds me of a cheery skylight.

Thank you for the kind words
I do still love it
I do love the colour
I mean i can't get rid of all my prePS jewlery and start over ! :mrgreen2:

I am not certain if it’s heat treated. Would definitely be a bonus if it wasn’t. The valuation says that under magnification minor inclusions can be seen so hoping that means it’s not treated lol!

Wow those are two beautiful sapphire rings!
I love the offset swirl split shank setting of the first one! The color of the stone is gorgeous!

The other is beautiful too with a romantic Victorian feel and what look to be sparkly old cuts in the halo. The new one is very different from these and will be a great addition to your expanding collection of blue sapphire rings.

It’s very easy to start “collecting” once you start. Lol For me, I really wanted to have the sense of seeing a block of color when I looked down. I collected a few in the process of finding the one that finally satisfies that wish. Hope you love the new one!

Speaking of collecting.....
What do you think of my collection? Lol
