My husband and i recently purchased a Solitaire Leo daimond ring from Kay for 6g.
After purchasing the ring, we came home and i did some research on Kays Jeweler and Leo brand.
I am feeling like we got ripped off. The ring isn't fully 1ct. Its 0.97ct. Certified by GIA, clairty is si2, color H, cut is Good.
Did we get ripped off? Can we get a refund? The ring is in the process of getting resized.
I'm just really bugged by how many bad reviews and rip off stories I've found online with Kays jewelry.
I don't want to over pay for something that isn't worth that much. Help please? Ty

What does ripped off mean? I also have bought mall diamond jewellery, uneducated.

If you can return the diamond ring return it!

Ripped off as an cheated. Or paying more then what the ring is actually worth.

With jewellery you almost always pay more than it’s worth. Almost any diamond that you buy and bring home will be very hard to sell for the price you just paid.
But yes In your case you probably most definitely overpaid and probably didn’t even get high quality diamond for it.

Can you return it?

The ring is in the process of being resized. Not even sure how to go about it, to return it.
I'm just so sad. Not feeling 100% happy with the price we paid.

Why don’t you call there today/tomorrow and tell them you want to return it? When did you buy it?
Don’t beat yourself up about it. Almost everybody has bought mall jewellery. I remember when I was 17 I made my dad (because he would forget to buy presents) buy my mom diamond studs (I had no idea about diamonds) for 10k that are worth maybe 700usd now.
But do try to return it. If that doesn’t work enjoy your ring! And next time you are ready to buy jewellery come here and ask for advice!

Try to return it. You must have thought the ring looked nice when you bought it, so please try to enjoy it if you can’t send it back.

Save up for an upgrade then as @Lessics says, come back here for advice!

Looks like James Allen doesnt carry Leo brand

I’m not familiar with that brand but you can look up diamonds with your same specs to compare.

There’s a tool under the Resources tab above- just put the specs in there.

Post the gia certificate here. The Leo is supposed to be a better than average diamond. If we see the numbers we can reassure you.

My mistake. Its not GIA, its GSI. Darn it!

Was it sold to you a 1ct? If so, perhaps you could argue you didn’t get what you thought you’d paid for?

Well, here's a good comparison. From Blue Nile, a .96 diamond with wider spread (your diamond, by the way, has poor spread for its carat weight, ergo must be cut deep), graded by the GIA (a far better, tighter, and more legitimate grading lab), with excellent polish and symmetry (as opposed to good), with ideal overall cut, H SI2 -

$2995 - or $2950 with bank wire.

So, yes, I'd say you've overpaid. A lot.

Return it if you can. Call them IMMEDIATELY.

Here's a far nicer 1ct H SI1 - 6.41 x 6.43 (enough size difference to notice) - $4925k, ideal cut, excellent polish and symmetry

Or - an even nicer 1.01ct E SI1- 6.44 x 6.48 - ideal cut, excellent polish and symmetry - $5180

Or - even nicer - a 1.02ct F SI1 6.42 x 6.45 - ideal cut, excellent polish and symmetry - $5379

All of these will look bigger and sparkle more than the stone you bought. They'll also all look cleaner; I suspect, in the right light, you'll be able to see the inclusions in the stone you bought from Kays. Best advice - get back to Kays and try to unload the one you got, then start again. it doesn't have to be a long, slow process; it's easy enough to find a nice diamond, get it set into a ring and have it shipped promptly. With covid, it will take a couple of weeks - but the process doesn't need to be arduous.

Good luck!

Nearly ALL of us started with Mall jewellery, back in the day that’s all there was! You bought a “diamond ring” for whatever you budget was and that was that.
years pass, knowledge gained, experience earnt and better decisions can be made.
years pass, hullo Internet. Hullo online shopping....
Hullo Pricescope with free assessment tools and a combined Million years (ok, slight exaggeration) worth of diamond, coloured gems, pearls, jewellery old and new knowledge and experience.
Do whatever you can to return it. Pay the cost of resizing but bring that $6,000 back here and let’s go shopping!

Did I miss the price that was paid by the OP or was it not mentioned?

Leo diamonds is a brand available in UK's high street/mall jewellery shops.

They are supposed to be better quality than others, and cost a bit more.

Not sure if a ring be returned once it is resized, so ring the vendor right away to stop the resizing and ask for it to be returned.

As for the size, need to see the original listing in full to see if it specifies a size range for the diamond.

Mathematically, 0.97 can be rounded up to 1.00!

Good luck!

DK :))

I’m sorry that this happened @MK86. I can feel the panic in your post. I would run, not walk, to your nearest Kay and see what can be done. Speculating whether or not it could be returned isn’t going to solve anything. Call, reach out, take action as soon as possible. Maybe they will just let you pay the resizing fee which is a whole lot better than the full $6k. Convince them that this is NOT what you want, be firm. $6k is a lot of money. GO! The sooner the better.

Unfortunately GSI is not a reputable lab. Sadly mall jewelers like Kay, Jared, Zales, etc. are known for selling subpar diamonds at ridiculously high prices, their craftsmanship is awesome and their “warranties” are practically useless (lots of stories of diamonds being switched out when serviced, etc.). Like others have recommended, I’d suggest you do everything in your power to get a refund. If they refuse and you paid by credit card you could even threaten to contest the charge based on the grounds that they sold you a .97ct diamond vs. a 1ct diamond. Best of luck.

awesome=awful (that’s what I get for typing on my iPad)

Here's a link to Kay's return policy - https://www.kay.com/kay-returns-exchanges?icid=FOOTER:Returns

You have 30 days to return something for a refund.

It looks as if you should be able to return the diamond and the setting for a full refund, unless you had the setting engraved or customized in which case you may have to pay for the setting although you still should be able to return the diamond for refund ...

Good luck - hope it is an easy return situation!

You 100% overpaid! You can get a full carat or higher with better specs for that price. I know it’s nerve wracking to return especially face to face but it’s your hard earned money and you don’t owe them any favors. ... you have to be 100% happy whenever you’re spending that much money. I wish you all the best and please keep us posted !
