Yup, this price would make me more comfortable as well. But OP keep in mind the bigger the carat weight, the greater the ppc, all other things being equal. :))

I will definitely keep that in mind! Thank you.

The stone I had in mind was a 3.05 ct Afghani Tourmaline from Roger Dery. It was around 250- per carat. Not trying to side track, strictly for color reference and price... This is it set (below). It's dark but rarely blacks out and shows more green than blue most of the time. And judging by the pictures, the stone in question will show more green. It's easy to manipulate the color on stones like this to appear more blue in photographs (bottom) by flooding them with direct light. None of these pictures show the stones true nature.

GregS, thank you for showing me the photo of your tourmaline and the price per carat; that helps a lot. I like the necklace - very pretty! I admire the color of the stones in your avatar photo and I would love to find a paraiba for our 35th wedding anniversary next year. It will have to be my husband's present too, I expect, since they're so pricey! No sports car for him.

Chrono, thank you for your opinion; I really appreciate it, and it makes me feel better about my decision to return the stone.

To review stones on PS, do not post the vendor's name and have the stone on hold whilst under discussion.

I didn't realize that vendors will hold a stone. I'll try that next time - thank you!

I think that's a good decision. For that price, that thing better be bright and glowy all of the time. And it's not.

Just curious, where did you get it?

From a vendor called Treasure Gems, in Australia. I found him on the Gemology Online Marketplace; just doing a general search for blue tourmalines led me there. He's responsive and prompt with answers to questions. It cost a lot to return the stone, so now I'll be extra leery about overseas purchases. He promptly refunded me upon receipt so I can say that he seems professional in dealing with his customers.

I wish there was a way to ask on PS about a stone prior to purchasing it without leaving oneself open to someone "snatching" it! I feel like I'm operating in the dark because I just don't know enough.
So long as you ask the vendor to hold it first, you'll probably be fine. Some vendors can't or won't hold stones, but so long as it's not a drop (Barry and Gene are the WORST - you have to have your finger on the trigger and get lucky to get most of their stones) you'd probably be fine.
