Hello, first-time buyer here. Thanks very much for the excellent information! I have been reading the wiki and forums and have learned a great deal. Coming from zero like I was, this site is really valuable.

I am looking for an engagement ring. I've narrowed it down to a round brilliant, hopefully above 1 ct, a good cut, and a simple platinum solitaire setting. I have taken to heart your enthusiasm for cut, and would like to maximize both cut and size to the extent my budget will allow. Fluorescence would be ok. I'm ideally looking at within $8000 for setting+stone, but I can stretch the budget a little if it means a better value.

I've been looking at BGD, WF, and HPD, since they are all well-liked here and do not charge NYS sales tax.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give!

I like the H VS2 that Rocky picked out. And I agree, as it is my first choice as well.

If you want something a little more budget friendly there is this one which is really lovely as well:

I would go for this setting instead though: http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/engagement-rings/solitaire/classic-truth-solitaire-platinum-5369p

Or this one if you want 6 prongs: http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/engagement-rings/solitaire/classic-tiffany-style-half-round-platinum-5478p

Gypsy has a better eye for settings than I.

Go with her suggestion there!
