Ladies,

1) How do you store and display your jewelry?
2) Do you keep the designer boxes that your pieces came in? If so, how do you use those boxes?
3) Are you worried about security and break-ins?

Here's my issue:
I used to live in a doorman building with double entrances (Need 2 separate keys to enter). My new building doesn't feel as secure, and there have been some thefts recently!

In the old apartment, I stored my jewelry in their individual Tiffany/Hermes/etc. boxes, which were displayed in a tray. I don't feel comfortable doing that here because there are security issues and also because my collection has grown a bit too large for this. I bought a non-descript jewelry box, but don't feel completely comfortable leaving that out in the open, either.... What to do?

I do SO like to have all my lovelies out to see and enjoy.

I have had this same discussion with myself SO many times!! I love seeing everything nicely on display, I don''t love that everyone else can see everything nicely on display.

I would love to hear a quick fix - I guess it kinda defeats the purpose to post it on a public forum, though

For now, security has won out.

Hi Yssie,
Yeah, I wondered if people might be hesitant to answer my question, but I really am stuck for good ideas! I hope Pricescopers will at least answer the part about displaying jewelry and saving the boxes. A few more pieces added to my collection and I''ll be going into box overload.

I used to save all the boxes but alas, getting married and sharing space with a husband has not allowed me to do this. I actually threw out a Tiffany box for the first time this year!

However, I live in a townhome and don''t really have security issues. I figure, if someone were to break in, they would find the jackpot fairly easily by opening a few drawers. I care the most about my wedding set, which is always securely on my finger.

On the other hand, my mom has a secret box that fits into a cubby hole in the inside of her dresser, that is where she has always kept her emeralds and diamonds. I know her dresser came that way though. That might be something to look into if you are nervous about security in your building.

I live in a secure highrise and I just leave my jewelry in my jewelry box. Someone comes into my house everyday to pick up my dog for daycare and I''ve never worried about him. I do hide my jewelry box when the cleaning people come, though.

Hm, there''s an idea. I''m always a bit nervous keeping my jewelry near my clothes, though. Won''t the closet and drawers be the first place (after the jewelry box, of course) that thieves would pick apart?

Gleam,

Do you save your boxes or do anything special with them?

I do miss my secure apartment.

safety deposit box for anything more than day to day pieces. this works fine, since i dont wear anything too glammy as a day to day thing. so if i need a piece for something special, i always have lead in time to go get it.

i used to be haphazard, but not any more since a good friend of mine found out how careless i was one day over lunch, and marched me into the bank to line up suitable storage. she was right, too.

Get a lockbox (one of those fireproof ones) and store it someplace other than the bedroom, since it is the logical first place a thief would look. I''d toss the boxes, they really have no value other than being dust-collectors. I know, I used to keep mine too, but really, they are a waste of space and just advertise that you have something expensive hidden somewhere.

Well, you basically would have to know the box was there, you take the drawer out and then in the side of the dresser is the box, and you actually have to reach pretty far back. Her dresser is quite old so I don''t think they are made like they used to be anymore.

Peace of mind?? Safety deposit box.

I have quite a few diamond & diamond/gemstone combination earrings. I keep them in a safety deposit box and rotate them out on my lunch break once a week. I have insurance, but its more about how heartbroken I would be if I lost them all at once (they were gifts over the last 15 years).

I have a safety deposit box for my "big" pieces and things I don't wear that often (Tahitian pearls, colored stone collection, etc.), a home safe that screws into a heavy-ass piece of furniture for precious/semi-precious things I'm currently working on/keeping at home to wear (this isn't as much a defense against determined burglars as a fail-safe against grabby casual guests) and a jewelry box that's stuffed with costume-y fun stuff. It's a hassle and a pain in the tuchis to have these kinds of divisions, but I'd rather do all that than lose the stuff I've spent a lifetime accumulating in an afternoon.

ETA: I forgot two parts of the three part question! I save boxes in a drawer (largely because I'm a packrat - I have no plans to resell, and I don't get a kick out of displaying them), and, yes, I do worry. But what's the alternative - selling the jewelry to afford a place with better security? While O'Henry would approve, *pass*!

Do you keep your day to day pieces in a jewelry box? The problem is, my day to day pieces are the ones that have the most sentimental value to me. These are the irreplaceable pieces that remind me of milestones in my life and relationships.

What do you think of buying another jewelry box and filling it with cheapy costume pieces? Then I could leave that out and hide the "real" jewelry box. Or use my lovely boxes to display the fake pieces?

This.
I have a jewelry box I keep on my dresser, it''s just a hodgepodge of non-sentimental and very easily replaced costumey stuff. I keep all the goods looked up though in a separate area

When I last went on vacation I was wondering how to hide my jewelry and read that one thing you can do is rip up a corner of carpet in a room and cut away the padding and then put your jewelry there and then put the carpet on top of it. The website I read said the last thing thieves do is check stuff like that!

ETA - I only display my fun stuff. I have a few items out, but the rest is in boxes hidden away. The only downside to this is I often forget I had this or that because it's been out of site for so long..

Yes, having a second jewelry box with cheap stuff is a great idea. I read about that too as being a good idea. Thieves are in too big of a hurry to assess what they''ve found. They just grab and run!

Unfortunately, I don''t think a professional thief would have much trouble finding most of the hidey hole type places we might think of for stashing jewelry. If they really want it, they''ll find it. Did anyone ever watch that tv show called It Takes a Thief? Those guys demonstrated time again that not only could they find ways into your house that you might not expect, but they found basically everything of value, very quickly, regardless of how "out of sight" it might be.

There are also non-thief issues to consider, such as fire. The solution DH and I settled on was a fire safe. It''s large enough to hold important files (insurance documentation, titles for the cars, passports, birth certificates, etc), sentimental things we would hate to lose (dvds of all our wedding photos, for example), as well as my more sentimental/expensive jewelry. It''s much too heavy/bulky for anyone to carry out of the house without attracting serious attention, locks securely with a digital key pad lock, and it gives our things a chance to survive a fire, heaven forbid we ever have one. Oh, and it takes me no longer to get something out of the safe than it would to take it out of a well-hidden jewelry box.

amazed that no one suggested a safe perhaps?

I never leave the house without it being alarmed and if I''m home alone, the windows and doors are always alarmed. The cleaning lady dosen''t even clean the house if no one is there because I won''t give her the codes.

I also have a safe. I won''t go into location wise other than its not in a bedroom, but I will just say its very big, very heavy, and you''d need to rip through the floor joists and a cement wall to remove it.

If you can''t have a safe in your place (though its recommended) then get a safe deposit box.

I now live in a town that dosen''t have a lot of crime but you just never know who can be hit. I grew up in a city that had lots (and lots) of crime so I choose not to take chances no matter where I am.

when I was in Ireland I hung my diamond ring from the tassel holding the curtains in the master bedroom. I just threaded my ring on the tassel and positioned it behind the curtain. I only keep costume jewelry in obvious places lol

ALL of my jewelry right now except my diamond earrings and one silver ring and one silver necklace are in a safety deposit box... I miss it though - I wouldn''t want it there if I was in town. I''d find something creative. I have a few other ideas but I don''t want to give them away lest the diamond thieves are reading!

Totally agree with Whitby.

here''s my suggestion.. just wear it all, all the time :)

I never display jewelry. Only keep what is being worn, the rest goes to the bank.

We have a safe and a safety deposit box. Leaving jewelry boxes out is an invitation to steal. BTW don''t throw away those designer boxes. Sell them on ebay
2.gif

Get a safe. Don''t worry about displaying them and showing off the bags/boxes/whatever. Get the heaviest safe you can and lock those babies up!

I keep a box of rings {inexpensive ones} out on my nitetable, rather visible when you walk in. I also have a few strands of costume jewelry "pearls" on a stand out in the open.

I''m not saying WHERE my good stuff is....

I do something like this - the jewelry box on my dresser has costume pieces, and I hide the good stuff.

I have a safe deposit box at the bank, and a safe at home. An extremely cluttered house works pretty well, too. Yeah, boys, it''s in here somewhere... >;-D

Fire safe set into concrete, and lots of full replacement value insurance.

Using a jewelry box is like having a neon sign out front saying "steal me"
