I thought it looked a little purple but I was interested in TL's (spinel whisperer) opinion when I saw it too. Way out of my price range.

What do you think of the color of this one. It is a 1.66 ct.

I recognize the picture and I will mention that the round stone next to it, which appears to be the same color, was apparently sold and returned. Which makes me think the color is not the same as the picture.

Way way way too purple. The photo on the hand leaves nothing to be desired, and all the photos against a dark background artificially enhance the color. It probably looks like a rhodolite IRL

ETA: I still maintain I like the AJSgems heart I posted the best out of everything I've seen, but it's so darn expensive.

Make an offer. I don't know if they take offers, but I think it's worth a shot. If you plan on making an offer, then ask about any color shift, and ask if there is any orange in the stone. Also ask if it has STRONG UV fluor.

Oh that's Art Nouveau's spinel. I think there are photos in a thread somewhere of that ring. It's a lovely watermelon color (I think that's how she described it). I think Leon modified the color in that image because her photos don't look that orange.

Well, that's like the heart I showed you, if AJS photo is accurate. Maybe you can find that in a smaller size, in order to save some $$$. Anything over 2 carats in a clean stone will be pretty expensive. Sometimes sleepy stones or ones with visible inclusions will be less money too, so if that doesn't bother you, look for those as well. Art Nouveau has an amazing collection and a really fine eye for gems.

I don't see any orange, as she states, but it might shift a little in artificial light as these gems tend to do. That doesn't bother me as much as a stone with an overabundance of orange (can you tell I don't like orange in my gems?).

I can't find the video link. Okay, this is deemed pinkish red by GRS, but it's only "vibrant." I will admit, I'm not a fan of GRS comments, but something tells me that vibrant is not as deeply saturated as vivid. I would email GRS to make sure. Looking at them side by side, to me the heart has more saturation, although it is more pink than the oval. I like the heart better (sorry). I would ask AJS, in their opinion, which one has better saturation, based on color, not appearance of red.

I wasn't pointing that out as a candidate for you to buy, but only to point out that this one has a video and the same GRS color designation as the oval you're considering. I wanted you to see the video so you would know what a "vibrant pinkish red" might look like per GRS.

Why don't you phone AJS? Arnold and Rung will most definitely help. You need to ask them because we're only looking at photos and descriptions. They can see the actual gem - we're guessing, they're not. If you speak with them, line up ones that you like and get them to do a handshot of them all together or a video.

Also it would be an idea for you to send them photos of the ones you like - but bear in mind, monitors make things look different so what you see and what they see are potentially two different things.

LD is right, as we are just guessing, but the top one looks a bit purple to me. Again, it could just be the photos. Please call AJS. I've never worked with them, but LD has, and she would know.

Another vote to call AJS. I found Rung to be particularly helpful when I was picking out my moderately included mahenge...If I went looking for the same qualities in a stone now, I'd probably end up paying twice as much...my 3.39 cushion moderately included Mahenge was about $540.

Jeesh, I swear, I can't mention a stone on here any more that I like. I'm so sorry BrightIce.

I was watching Ben Kho, he's an award winning cutter, and he advertises a few days a week on Gem Shopping Network. While I do think GSN has some overrated dreck, and they use all the hype in the world, I find Ben to be a bit more honest than the rest. He had on a 1.7 carat oval Mahenge in a ring, very bright stone, in an 18K gold triple shank halo with lots of nice bright diamonds, and the whole ring was $4K. Now that the prices of Mahenges have really gone through the roof, even on meh Mahenge "wannabe" material advertised as Mahenge, I thought this was a good deal. Now I never bought from GSN, but they do have a 30 day return policy. It's worth a look at his shows because it is precision cut by him, and I think his pricing is in line with everyone else's these days.

If you don't have GSN on your local cable, they do have a live feed through the internet which you can watch. I think his deals on Mahenge seem to be better than what GSN offers on their own material. I believe he buys air time from them.
