Help me reset my princess

If I'm honest I was probably never happy with my ring. I'm getting married in April and have to choose a wedding band. I thought maybe now was a good time to think about a reset.

I have a .72 princess set in a simple cathedral setting. I'd like the stone to look bigger. This weekend I tried on some rings at a mall store to see how I felt about different settings. One of them was the same size center stone as mine, with channel set princesses. The ring was a cathedral too, but the shoulders didn't go up as high and the diamond was set higher. The stone looked bigger. They have that setting with G-H, VS diamonds and a matching band. The diamonds look very nice. They make my F center stone look yellow! How is that possible??? I like the setting quite a bit, but I'm not sure it's "enough". I also don't like the jeweler there. She set my current setting and did a crappy job. I also just had a created colored stone set by her and am not impressed. I'd prefer her to not do the reset.

I looked at BGD, but they don't have a setting quite like this. I've searched PS high and low for a hand shot and can't find one. I don't quite like the severe taper to the band. Does anyone know if the princess version does this? The other issue is I don't think BGD has a matching band for this ring yet. Which may mean it is probably going to cost a pretty penny to be the first one?

I don't have to have side stones. Though now I'm feeling like a diamond band against the plain metal of my ering looks "off". I also don't like all the scratches on the band of my ering right now. So side stones would hide that. I do think that the stone needs to sit higher, or the shoulders not come up so high. I'm open to all suggestions! Help me out PS!

Hi Hoofbeats-I will try to help! there are certainly a lot of options for settings out there.

I am surprised you thought your F stone looked yellow compared to the melee. Since the melee is smaller it will always appear whiter just because of the different optical properties but I would think you would be OK with F. Perhaps the jewelry store lighting was fooling your eye?

Also it is commonly thought that having a pave band makes the center stone appear smaller, since the diamonds on the band detract from the center stone. It would definitely add more bling though, or you could go with sidestones.

I personally like the look of a diamond band with a solitaire, I think the contrast is really nice. However, this is really up to you...

In the WF setting you posted I think it looks too 'clunky' and there is an awkward gap...I much prefer the look of an integrated head.

OK well not sure that my collection of disorganized thoughts is helpful at all but there it is good luck finding a setting that you really love! a halo or three-stone could also give more bling...it just depends on what you like.

You can ask WF to make that setting but with thinner sides.

I too was a bit concerned that my F looked yellow. I've thought that on and off. *shrug*

I have to be the MOST indecisive person in the world. I also thought that side stones of any kind would make my stone look smaller. I didn't see that to be the case though with the example at the store.

I have no idea what to do! If I do side stones, then they have to be princess. I can't deal with mixed shapes in this case.

I'm open to other vendors as well. All suggestions are welcome. BGD is out of my price range if I go custom I think. The quote for a simple channel set princess band (not eternity) was rather high simply because they don't already have a mold for that. Maybe my timing is bad. They sure are cranking out new pieces daily, but nothing that I want. I think it's expensive to be the first. WF - the stuff I like isn't as "slim" as I want it to be. Too chunky.

Hi hoofbeats, if you like the WF one, I think you could always ask them to make it a little less bulky. Just like you described - make the channel with less metal.

Also, the ring that you saw in the mall store might have been cut shallower than yours, which could make it look bigger than yours. Did you compare your stone with that one directly, or did the jeweler simply say that the center stone was the same carat weight as yours? Just wondering.

Whatever the case, your best bet might be to contact WF and ask if they can make that setting that you like, with less metal so that it's not as bulky. It looks like a beautiful setting!

Well they told me it was the same size and I put the two rings next to each other. Then they looked like the same size. But apart, the other stone looked bigger. I attribute that to setting. . . I'm going to go to a few more stores to see what I think about side stones vs plain band.

Of all the settings you posted I really like the Brian Gavin truth with princesses the best. it addes the bling yet still looks delicate. Remember it is likely that you are going to wear this ring for a long time and every day. Same for the wedding band.

I agree - that is my favorite, but I can't deal with the view from the top in regards to the taper. I think when a ring tapers, it makes the finger look fat. I've found a few hand shots of the truth setting (without the princess sides, but variations) and I just don't like the taper. It would be costly to change that

hoofbeats did you ask if it is costly to change it? i think BGD has several settings with round stones that dont taper, so you could probably ask them about changing one of those to princesses?

In order to have the truth with princess sides not taper then a whole new mold would have to be created. That is what I was told. I didn't question the price, as I figured that is basically custom and would cost quite a bit. I'd prefer to find something "stock" and go with that. BGD does a lot of stuff with rounds and not so much with princess. I will look on the site again to see if there is one with round sidestones that I like. But I'm thinking channel set here because I don't want pave to fall out and I don't like the look of bead set. . . I'm going to go to Jared and try some rings on and get a feel for things. Maybe that will help since I can't see any of these in person.
