I am just beginning the process of getting a custom ring setting done inspired by this Kwiat Vintage Collection piece.

http://www.kwiat.com/fine-diamond-j...apered-baguettes-vintage-style/p/58200/99/0/0

It is listed as platinum on the website, but looks very different from all their other platinum pieces, as do most of the pieces in their vintage line (which I love!), many of which are listed as 18k, and I am assuming are unplated.
See the following on page 12 of their engagement rings:
http://www.kwiat.com/bridal/diamond-engagement-rings/99#page=12
The one on the left=shiny bright, platinum
The one on the right=18k rose gold
And the one in the middle with the same tone as my inspiration ring is clearly a whole different animal, but is also described as platinum. So what gives? And what would you go with in a custom ring to emulate that look?

Have you seen this photo from Yssie?

A - PT950/Ru

B - 18k (custom piece) from DBL, exact composition: "Palladium-WG" - don't know exact alloy

C - 18k WG (custom piece) from RDG, exact composition: [75% Fine Gold] [17% Palladium] [5% Pure Silver] [3% Platinum]
In-person the RDG alloy (C) looks slightly warmer than (B)

D - 18k WG (stock piece) from e-wb, exact composition: ?

E - 18k WG (custom piece) from WF, exact composition: [75%AU] [9.8%CU] [9.8%NI] [5.22%ZN]

F - 18k WG (custom piece) from e-wb, exact composition: [75%AU] [16.5%CU] [4%NI] [4.5%ZN]
In-person (F) is slightly yellower and pinker than (E), especially under fluorescents

G - 14k YG

Hi OECsareforLovers- Thanks for your reply. I have seen that photo, and it is really helpful!

To me the one in the photo that looks the most like my inspiration ring is the unplated 18k in the C or D band examples. I guess I am just looking for another pair of more experienced eyes in determining what metal will give me the look of my inspiration ring. It is listed as platinum, but doesn't look like any platinum that I have seen? So I am confused. :?

its platinum, but the only bits of platinum in the picture are the mount and the very edges of the ring

the mystery metal you are referring to may be the tapered baguettes on either side of the centre strone. These are diamonds.

Not sure if that helps or if I made a stupid post.

I was looking at making a custom ring very similar from tiffanys, but gave up due to complexity of procuring tapered baguettes, matching the colour on the centrestone and cost of adding x2 0.45 carats of sidestones.

gorgeous design though

I think the differences are due more to photography than anything else. Some of them may be black and white photos and the lighting may be different in some. Many of the vintage rings have milgrain and engraving and will not have a high polish. If you are having a ring made in platinum, the two best choices are 95% platinum/5% ruthenium or 90% platinum/ 10% iridium. Those are more durable and will scratch less than softer alloys. I would also not assume the wg pieces are unplated. Since they are 18k, I think they'd show more color if they were unplated, but I suppose some might be.

I believe my antique style Beaudry rings are 90/10. That might be better for engraving.

Proto- I see where the tapered baguettes begin and end, and where the metal is, but thanks. :) What I am referring to is the difference in metal appearance from photo to photo all listed as platinum on the Kwiat website. Maybe I am just not explaining myself well...it wouldn't be the first time... ;)

DS- Thank you.I was wondering if it could just be the photography, but then I figured why would they make the same metals look so different unless they actually look that different IRL? The vintage style Kwiat rings have a much warmer tone to the metals than the other lines like in the link above, which shows the photos side by side. The rest of the Kwiat vintage line, which looks like the same metal in their photos, is listed as 18k wg. I like that warm tone, and from what I've seen in person neither platinum nor plated WG has that subtle warmth to it. I guess I should just get the metal I prefer and not fuss over it. Thanks for the info on the different platinum alloys. Those are actually the two alloys being offered to me by the two jewellers I've narrowed it down to. So good there if I go with platinum.

If you're getting a custom piece made, I think the question isn't what metal was used in your inspiration piece, but...

what metal would do you want used to make your custom piece?

:wink2:

Seriously - what color, durability, and other properties do you want in the ring that will be made just for you? =)

I think it is just photoshopped.

Y'know, I think this is exactly what I needed to hear! :))

And thanks Julie N! I am just going to assume the photo has been manipulated, and just figure out what I want my ring to look like as suggested above.
