Help with Cushion Sapphire wedding ring

Size comparison:
Item 959 - 7.7 x 6.2 mm
Item 1102 - 7.3 x 5.5 mm

Is the 0.7 mm difference on one end too small? Look at the physical size, not ct weight because cuts/depths varies. You can request additional pictures from GemFix but at this point, it is best to view the stone in person.

That is a good point, it seems the weight is mostly on the bottom of the other one.

I really like this stone with the exception of the price :), although the picture is pretty bad. I'm not sure if this site is reputable or not. I would want to see at least a few more photos. It way over my budget but I'm starting to realize I may need to adjust some of my budget or go with a heat treated sapphire. I just can't find what I'm looking for without compromising some of those things. I have seen a couple decent options for a heat treated ones, .

Thanks for the link Chrono, that is really helpful

Hey all just wanted to give you a final update on what I ended up choosing. First off thanks for all the replies and help. I ended up choosing an unheated natural cushion cut sapphire from http://www.deliqagems.com/ . I worked with the owner Shasha until I found the perfect cushion cut sapphire and the perfect color I was looking for. She was awesome to work with, she was always honest about the quality of the stone and also the color it would produce. It took me awhile to finally decide but I was extremely happy with the result I got for the price.

She told me she works directly with the mines and uses her own cutters so her prices are decent. It seems to be the case becuase I got a good stone at a great price.

Some of the other sites I looked at weren't even close to her prices and she was much more honest and up front about her business and what I was purchasing. Anyway overall I would recommend her. I should say I also talked with the guy at gemfix and he seemed really cool too but he didn't end up having any unheated stones in what I was looking for and he also seemed very busy. Probably didn't have enough time for a guy like me lol.

I emailed Sasha this month and she said she's running a promotion for Halloween if anyone is interested, it's 10% off the price.

Please tell us more about your stone - the details like carat weight, dimensions and origin.

Hey, congratulations, that's a big deal to have found your stone! It looks to be a sizeable stone with good color everywhere except in the areas of extinction. And thanks for the new source - I for one, have not heard of this vendor.

The dimensions of the sapphire are 8.67 x 7.63 x 6.71 mm with a carat weight of 4.09. It is from Ceylon with a certificate from Gemological institute of Colombo. I think it is described as a medium blue.

I was a little concerned at the certificate at first but then I did some research and it seems it is a good shop. One other pricescope member mentioned the institute as being good. If anyone else has more details on the certification institute I would be interested.

On the certificate it has a refraction index of 1.762-1770. Not sure what that means though or if that is just standard for sapphires.

Now I have to find a ring ugg lol....

It will make a fabulous ring stone - it will be a pleasure to see your finished ring in hand. :))

Thanks for the update. And the addition source :)

The stone looks beautiful in his hand shot. When will you receive it? I hope you'll continue to update us with what's happening with your sapphire purchase and setting process. I would wait until you have the stone in hand before going all out on the setting to make sure the stone is the right one for you. Some people are surprised by the indoor colour shift and/or photography inaccuracy. I'm not saying it is or isn't, but I like to be cautious, especially with unvetted vendors. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the stone works out perfectly and that we have another blue sapphire source to recommend.

Ya I already received the stone, I probably should have mentioned that lol. I can take some of my own pics if anyone is interested. It was pretty much exactly like the pictures I received from the vendor so I was happy. One particular angle if you tilt it a certain way isn't quite as bright as the others but it matched the picture I was shown at that angle so I was OK with that. Overall it is great color almost everywhere so I can't complain too much lol.

I will post an update when I get it all complete. I going to try and do a ring with a couple pear diamonds on either side. I've found a couple ideas online but I'm not sure what to do yet.

Yes, would you please show pictures of your stone in various lights? Thanks :)

Sure Mico! I'm out of town on business today but I should be able to post in a couple days.

Thanks! I'm lurking around trying to slowly learn about sapphires... I'd like an heirloom quality piece eventually

Can't wait for more pictures.

Why does gemsny have both GIA and UGL certs?

Hi Merlin,
Came across your post randomly. I also bought a yellow sapphire for my mum earlier this year from http://www.deliqagems.com for her 60th birthday (mum's favorite colour). I also dealt with Sasha directly; she is very lovely, open and trustworthy - she helped me choose the perfect sapphire. They are new to online selling but they have been cutting for a long time from what I remember - I think her dad used to be diamond cutter. Stone I got was exactly as it was in pictures, I was quite surprised as it must be a very difficult to photograph gems. I can highly recommend them. She is in Australia, which made it much convenient for me as I am here too.
I also learnt a bit about sapphires when I was doing my research and refraction index of 1.762-1770 is actually an identifying feature of sapphires :) I also did some reading on the Natural Sapphire Company and some other places about sapphire cutting - they recon as long as you don't see a 'window' from front on, that's a very well cut for a sapphire - I think you always get the loss of colour when tilted. I learnt a lot about sapphires when I was shopping!

Aww. the coupon sounds good - may be time to get myself a stone too!

Oh I should have also mentioned that your sapphire looks stunning, beautiful lustre - quite a piece.

Lovely stone!

You probably already know most of it but I am typing this out for the benefit of others who might not know this. Stones with paperwork appear more authentic or genuine to most laypeople so having a lab memo tends to work in the vendor's favour. UGL is comparatively inexpensive and grading is also comparatively lax so it serves this purpose very well. A vendor is not going to send the stone to a higher tier lab if it risks coming back with a less than stellar report. With a UGL report, the buyer is assuaged that the stone is real and important enough to have a lab report showing that the stone has great colouration. Stones that are deemed of higher quality will be sent to GIA because it is a more well-known name and the vendor knows that the report will be positive and they can sell it at a higher price. Why 2 reports then? Although the UGL reports do not have a date listed, my suspicion is that the UGL reports came first, then the stones were later sent to GIA once the UGL report comes back as highly positive. Here is where I am going to be extremely presumptious - who is to know whether a few other UGL stones were also sent to GIA but came back with less than complimentary reports, and therefore, their GIA reports are not posted because the UGL reports appear more favourable? The truth is that I don't know their real reason but that would be my guess.

That theory sounds solid Chrono, I wouldn't be surprised if you are right.

Mico,

Here is a few pics with my camera phone. I'm no photographer but I did stay at a holiday inn last night :) lol j/k.

Let me know if you'd like to see a different view I am not sure the proper way to photograph a stone is but I tried my best. The color isn't quite the same in my pictures but hopefully at least it gives you an idea of what is sort of looks like.

Merlin,
Thanks for the pictures. Do you dare to wear the sapphire on the back of your hand and stand by the window to photograph it? Sapphires look their best under daylight. To prevent damaging the stone should it fall off, spread a huge fluffy blanket under your hand.

Chrono,

I will give it a shot, it's been cloudy lately but I will try and see if I can get a picture on the back of my hand. I might need to take it in the morning.

Beautiful!

Chrono, thanks for suggesting different lighting in pictures, it helps us lurkers watch the process for later ;)

Cloudy days are great for taking pics of stones if the clouds are not grey and dark:
"Surprisingly, north skylight (or south skylight in the southern hemisphere) is actually stronger on cloudy days."

http://www.palagems.com/quality_4cs.htm

I try to wait for a cloudy but sunny day to take pictures outside. It also decreases the harshness of the shadows and glare.

This I did not know. How cool and makes sense, based on the photos I've taken.

Ok here ya go guys sorry it took me awhile to get these and sorry for my ugles hands lol. I tried to take them in different lighting inside but close to a window so hopefully you see some light. One of the pictures is in darkness. My camera phone works pretty well so hopefully these work.
