would using fedex international priority be the option shipping to India? $115, but worth it to recoup several thousand

FYI: Loose gems are among the items prohibited (as per India) from being mailed to that country. So I'm doubting you or the addressee could prevail on a claim for USPS coverage, even if the value is under the $5000 cap set by USPS for acceptable deliveries to India via Priority Mail Inernational Express:

FedEx is showing the same restriction on shipping to India on their web sites -- although the FedEx page seems to suggest that shipment to a licensed broker in certain regions is permissible:

Perhaps the vendor you're contemplating offers that -- although that seems unlikely if that option -- or using a return label provided by them for an insured return -- isn't mentioned on their website.

Thank you. it seems its not best to buy large ticket items. I do know there are some vendors i India where you can send the item in the US, I will ask this vendor. Thank you for all the information you gave, very difficult to buy overseas, but I like the stones they have the most....

Shipping back might be problematic. At least that’s my experience with international shipping. If you are new to this, I’d also advise having an experienced person assist with verification that the stone matches the GIA lab report. Have you seen the report and verified it on the GIA website? I’m also more cautious with an unknown vendor.

to help other people I am answering this question. I purchased from Jeff Davies for $1100, it arrived safely there were however custom fees which I don't know how much b/c he would not let me pay half, I paid $38 to ship from US to Thailand. Jeff gave directions on how to ship back and to say he was professional and courteous is a understatement. I can say without a doubt he is the best seller for not only the purchase (thats the easy part) but the return process and fast correspondence. I would recommend him to anyone
