Help with whether to remake 1940s family heirloom?

Should I remake?

  • Yes, but don't expect convincing replica

I feel down the rabbit hole too!

Some items with a similar aesthetic below.
Although if I were you I’d go with Sako.

I do hope you get this done. I’m sure it will be beautiful and close to the original.

Whichever of the three choices you decide (having it remade, finding a similar vintage one, or letting it go) you really must tell your in-laws. I know it will be an uncomfortable thing for you to do, but these are your family, people you will know and have to live with for the rest of their lives. You really must not deceive them. Perhaps when you have the newly made ring (or the vintage one) on your finger, you can show/tell them. I couldn't imagine they wouldn't be touched with the length you went through to replace what was lost. And who amongst us hasn't had a cherished item lost or stolen? Its something I think most people can relate to.

I came across this, thought it might have a similar feel to the original.

Do you want the exact copy of the ring you lost or would you consider an inspired by piece?

Loving all the vintage options. It's hard to know if a similar vintage piece would help as much

Thank you, I agree it's important not to deceive my beloved in-laws. Unfortunately we rarely get to see eachother and may only have one visit this year - probably at my sister-in-law's horse farm so I won't wear jewelry.

No one in our family is as upset about the lost ring as me - my husband and his parents are extremely loving, forgiving and understanding, especially given the circumstances surrounding the lost items. When I asked my husband about telling them he said 'we will,' but it's not likely to ever come up unless we raise the topic. The replacement is for me more than anyone else - a gift to help me forgive myself.

As this ring will be a replacement for you - "a gift to help me forgive myself", I would lean toward getting a new ring created to look like the original ring.

While a vintage piece is lovely, and would probably be more cost effective, the vintage ring already has a history of its own. It has been worn by multiple people, and I'm not sure if it would fill the empty spot in your heart for the loss of your husband's grandmother's ring.

You will be "creating" the new ring, with all the loving memories/thoughts of your husband's grandmother. You may even want to get the inner band engraved with her initials or something meaningful to you.

I just wonder if even having a ring made will work. I have only replaced a ring that had sentimental value with an exact replica once and it just wasn’t the same.

Maybe you could incorporate grandmothers birthday stone into a ring if you have made. Just an idea. Perhaps have her birthstone in place of the diamond but incorporate the other design elements from the original piece.

Just popping in... I just had a ring "replicated" by Lucas at Valeria Jewelers (someone here on PS recommended him).

The "copy" is the one with the blue stones. The hand filigree is really good, it looks old. He created it from the ground up, and it does NOT look computer-generated.

He worked from pictures.

See my post on the "Pricescope Testimonials" thread if you'd like lots more photos.

I wasn't asking for an exact copy, and changed the elements I wanted.

Good luck!

P.S. I has this created after the loss of my own ring, I feel your pain.

I know its not the same
But i am now pretty sure i accidentally threw out several rings in a tidy up :wall::cry2: and one was the ring i had brought to remember Tinky by (orange lab saphires in a yellow gold filigree design)
Somewhere i have its warrenty with its picture on but im also trying to deside how to replace it
Its only my own heart ache i have to sooth

Yeah, loss is agonizing. My husband and I had dated long-distance. My ring was always a bit too large bc I wasn't there whe it was sized. I realized mine was gone almost immediately, no amount of searching found it. Trash, drains, the whole bit.

It's so upsetting when it's a sentimental item-- sh*t really does get lost.

I'm so sorry about your loss! orange sapphires sound lovely!

Pricing from Sako includes a larger center stone and vintage diamonds, it's a premium but I like Sako's work a lot, though as the price keeps going up I wonder whether I really want the ring that much...
Pricing from David Klass is for 'brilliant cut' diamonds, so I followed up to ask whether they do vintage cut, especially since the center is an old mine cut.

The more I look at vintage options the more I feel there are lovely choices at a low price I could enjoy wearing.

Another idea...honor her memory by placing her photo in a 1940's locket to be worn on special occasions/family holidays. Maybe engrave it with her name.

You don’t necessarily have to add more diamonds to the outer leaves or go with a bigger centre. That would keep the cost down and be more true to the original.

The more I think about it the more I agree with you. I'll ask for pricing closer to the original, which may put Sako and David Klass on par.

Check w Lucas at Valeria re: price!

I don't know what color grades other use but in the 1940's diamonds were likely more yellow. Jewelry shops today usually only carry the top 4 colors, D-F or D-G. This drives up price. It's unlikely stones in the 1940's were quite this white.

Lucas didn't get me my stone, I bought it myself, lol. (with cert).

You can get yellower stones for MUCH cheaper (if you can find them), GIA certified, maybe even old mine cut reproduction. There are 4 Cs, color is just one. Maybe find stones that are perfect in every other way, but yellower.

TBH mine is O color and was about $800 at 1.07ct. See picture. Perfect in every way except color/flouresence.

If a jeweler won't sell you stones that yellow, you could try PriceScope or these two companies:

Alternatively, lab diamonds are going to be huge in the next few years and are lower price. White sapphire is also a choice.

Don't give up on your dream!

I find this chart is helpful too, you can gauge carat size by how many mm the diamond you need is...

Here's a diamond price calculator as well:

PPS. While reading up on this topic I learned something new about my own stone!

I was trying to find out what the most common color was in the 1940's, and all I came up with was "yellower than today"... BUT we've always wondered where my stone came from (I got it from a jewelry school and it's a weird stone, "O" isn't really a readily available color anymore. But now I think it came from someone else's vintage ring.

My stone has a sliced off culet (it doesn't come to a point at the bottom), which is old-school *but also*, check it out!!! it's got frosted girdle that I just noticed from my post on this very string. I learned this in my research.

Another vote for "imperfect" diamonds!

I keep coming back to these beautiful picks

I'm excited that David Klass emailed me back with this design, asking about the center Old Mine Cut stone size. I love how this replicates the original so closely. I know Sako doesn't do the designing without deposit so David Klass is the frontrunner.

What do you think? Should I start a new thread with this?

This looks great to me! If you want prosumer input yes, do a separate thread so people know you are looking for design help.

@Tayberry I know you have already started a redesign but this ring reminded me of your original...

Oh man you're really ideal replacements! This one has all the elements- swirl and leaf motif, two-tone, period... I like it more than the original

Keep coming back to this one - is it sketchy that the title on ebay says 'Platinum' but it's obviously two-tone and the description says '14k'? Seller has a great rating.

I love this one and the budget busting find from Lang Antiques that @Ionysis was able to track down.

And it’s returnable if you don’t love it.
