excuse me?! US women have had the right to vote for less than 100 years as of this date....!

peace, movie zombie
I said *isn''t* ancient history. I''ve spoken to women (gone though) that told me of their sufferage story. The oral history is straight from the horses mouth. That''s not ancient history to me.

Will we be watching what he wears, how he carries himself & what dishes he chooses to use?

Interesting.

no, it isn''t ancient history. the US as a republic has no ancient history. however, women have had the right to vote for almost 1/2 the history of this country and have barely made a dent as far as representation at any level of government. so no surprise that a woman has not been elected to president. i find it self-defeating for women to hold a woman to a higher standard for running for president [or any elected office, for that matter] than they do a man......

most women do NOT know the history of the suffrage movement and do NOT know about the abuse these women suffered when jailed. to NOT vote or be politically involved is a slap in the face to these women who literally bled to make the vote possible for all US women. you were indeed privileged to have know women involved and talked with them.

re: "Will we be watching what he wears, how he carries himself & what dishes he chooses to use? "

yes, we will be watching what he wears [why not?! i like looking at men!] and how he carries himself, but i think we''ll be more interested in what baseball/football/basketball teams he favors, what golf clubs he uses, how he gets along with all the other 1st gentlemen/ladies, etc. then i hope we''d get past making sure he really is masculine and get down to the real issues. most first ladies have taken on ''projects'' and/or causes to support their president and i''d expect that the 1st gentleman would do the same.

Amen!

Funny, why would I care what golf clubs the 1st gentlemen uses?

Quite frankly, I think it''s a shame to not vote for many many reasons. It''s our civic duty.

And, to boot, I even have some suffragette jewelry. I''ll try to dig it up. Though, I think the jewelry is more tied to the British Suff. movement. It fits in nicely with the time period/style I collect.

f&i, you and i might not care re the golf clubs but you can bet the media will be all over it!

can''t agree more with you re voting! wish that here in the US it was like in AU: mandatory. its not a right, its also a duty. citzenship is more than being born in a country and carries responsibilities.

i hope you can post some pictures; i''d be very interested in seeing them.

my, how this thread has wandered!

I''m not sure I''d want voting to be mandatory. Seems there are a lot of uninformed people who will vote for whoever gives out the biggest piece of candy, w/o any concern for this country''s welfare.

I would have voted for Elizabeth Dole.

You should move to NC.

Not much buzz about her and 2008 - could be? I''ve always liked her for many reasons.

I''ll go back to my mantra on the Pres. election thread.

Informed by whom? I think many democrats think someone who votes republican are uninformed & visa versa.

I get what you mean though.

Just informed in general. They should at least know who's running for President.

Heck, there are a lot of people who don't even know (or care) who our VP is... can you imagine if everyone is required to vote? Lets see... eeny meeny miny MO!

the system seems to work in other coutries and people in other countries seem to be very interested in the political process and who is running on what platform. somehow these countries with the mandatory system has instilled in their citizens that it is their duty to be informed voters. now, i''m sure, some are not, but all the aussies i''ve met have been very interested in knowing who they are voting for and why. in fact, most know more about the US system tha most US citizens....

perhaps there is something so inherently wrong in our education that we cannot even get the concept of citizenship across to future voters...and then again, perhaps there are players in the political came that would rather voters not be informed.

Well, we used to have civic lessons and a mock vote. We would campaign, wear campaign buttons *and* the teachers would wear their candidate as well. Can''t do that any more. Teachers must seem neutral & policitcally correct - how exciting is that to a kid? Doesn''t open up much disscussion. Disscussion breeds curiosity. I do think teachers shouldn''t preach a platform; but, the pendulum has swung so in favor of the other way. The pure mechanics isn''t that interesting.

Didn''t a teacher get the ACLU involved when she was going to be suspended for having a Kerry sign on her bulletin board?

I don''t know. If I was a parent, I would hope that I wasn''t raising a sheep. A Kerry sign and the child will become a card carrying commie democrat?
28.gif

or a Bush sign & the child will grow up....well ...whatever? Fact is we have a right to choose. And, when our children grow up so do they.

I think it is our civic duty. But, I''m not for a whole lot of regulation of anything including mandatory voting. I always wear my seatbelt. I can see regulation of a minor child in the car; but, an adult shouldn''t be required to buckle up. Pretty soon they are going to have to have regulate Stupid. I digress.....personal responsiblity....shouldn''t have to be regulated.

It wouldn''t be a bad idea to regulate stupidity and lack of common sense. Darwinism doesn''t always work.

...sometimes darwinism does work. Do you remember the thread about the guy who cut off his private parts because a soccer team didn''t win? He''s out a gene pool!

I miss Mara''s tag line.....it used to be "Hey YOU! Out of the gene pool!"

Hahaha! I love hearing stories like that! I''m not a sadist or some kind of freak, but they deserve to be laughed at for being so stupid. Hope he didn''t have a chance to reproduce prior to cutting off his own testicles.

Italians are (or were) theoretically required to vote. While my husband was still an Italian citizen he got a card in the mail every year telling him to go vote! Interesting concept.

f&i,

well, seat belt regulation is a good example of why even adults need to be regulated: why should i have to pay more expensive insurance rates for my car and health insurance because you don''t want to wear a seat belt?! and it does come down to exactly that: those that don''t wear seat belts don''t assume all the risks and consequences, it gets passed on to all of us and we all pay more because of how the insurance industry works.

i am now a convert: 25 mph one car accident in 1987 left me hospitalized a few days, going to physical theraphy every day for a month [even weekends], and off work for 3 months. did i mention the concusion from being airborne and hitting the windshield? lucky i only had a small scar on my forehead. i was the unbelted passenger.... and i did get a ticket for being unbelted on top of it all. driver had no injuries but a totaled car.

AGBF ~ What party wanted him to vote ?

Belgium and Australia legally oblige their citizens to vote - though they do not have to cast a vote for any party, they retain the option of spoiling their ballots. and this is not a new idea, mandatory voting has been the law in Belgium for over 100 years (since 1893) and it became mandatory to vote in some elections in Australia in 1915, in all elections in 1942. (though imho, compulsory voting is an abhorent idea, antithetical to democracy.)

No party, Ice. The State.

It is ironic that we citizens can be forced to pay taxes, and yet voting is voluntary. I would gently suggest that if one can be forced into certain civic activities, voting should top the list.

The reason why mandatory voting will be a difficult sell in this country is quite simple: that would mean a complete upheaval. All of a sudden, we might actually elect a government of the people, by the people, for the people...

America has a history of restricted voting rights. Native Americans never had a say, blacks had to wait 100 years for one (and still fight for it), women came later, and now we are in the era of black-box voting machines, where there is no paper trail and where a US Senator (Chuck Hagel, NE) was head of one of the companies making the machines and got elected using the machines his own company made.

As yourself this: why would you ever make a voting machine with no audit trail? For those who can think for themselves, there is only one answer: so you can cheat.

I wish I could be more optimistic, but I can''t. I consider myself a student of history, and what it teaches is that life is always a struggle. There will always be those who game the system. And so decent people will always have to struggle against them. Conflict is a part of life and a part of death.

In the end, I can live with that. I have to. We all do.

hear, hear, richard! couldn''t agree with you more.....on all counts.

Now, would anyone care to discuss black-box voting?

No, it amazes me at the ability for an American to have so many conspiracy theories.

american conspiracy theories: think of it as the great national pass time founded in the tradition of being an unruly colony in revolt against the british empire.....insurgents each and everyone of those founding fathers!!! trust our government?! they certainly didn''t trust the brits....or accept the status quo. so they conspired to overthrow. and those brits found out the conspiracy was real enough.

I am amazed at the things done in the name of the United States and freedom when the world cannot see them being done. I am amazed that prisoners have been kept for years without charges being filed against them and without their having resort to counsel. I am amazed that the United States tortures prisoners. I am amazed at the number of people who *DIED* under torture in the prisons of Afghanistan and Iraq.

I am not amazed at the barbarity of other countries. I am enough of an American to feel that we are better than others, more interested in true freedom and justice. So I am amazed at the spectacular nature of our failure to support either since we invaded Afghanistan and Iraq.
