Peridot

Or iolite

Doesn''t it look like the iolite was taken with some sort of blue light or background blue?

Peridot for me.

And yes... there''s definitely some favorable lighting at work in that picture.

neither for me....
dont like green and iolite is usualy a inky dark blue black.

Can I persuade you to consider Tsavorite?? Iolite is a gorgeous stone and doesn''t have to be a dark color. I have seen many that are a lovely rich blue purplish color with nice saturation. Guess it depends what you want to spend. Peridot is lovely too. A nice compliment to your Spess. Ok I''m not helping am I, hehe

Whatever you choose, I know it will be lovely.

Mine, I am a blue girl thru and thru but the peridoit is BEAUTIFUL :)

How about Tanzanite...lots of history there and it may not be around for long.

I vote peridot.

I vote peridot. . . unlike storm I love green and would love to have a collection of peridot, chrome tourmaline, most importantly tsav, etc. -- I have been thinking of making a peridot pendant, with a largish peridot in the center and two darker green stones on the sides . . . maybe chrome tourmaline. I''d prefer tsav but can''t afford it.

I looked at all those peridot on that site and am wondering if you could find a brighter green somewhere else.

Storm~ I Like Green ~ But I see what you mean about the iolite in the links.. they are a bit dark. I have seen iolite with a bright purple/blue color before though... not as inky and cloudy as the ones that you linked

Kaleigh~ Would love the tzavorite.. however, after buying a new house, remodeling it, and getting ready for a trip overseas...I think he will have a tissy if I say that I want a tzavorite...but.. I am thinking on springing that round Christmas time.

Woo~ Thanks... I really think the peridot are pretty.. I have seen some icky ones too. I kinda like these colors and I really liek the cuts.. but it makes me a little itchy that there is some lighting stuff going on with the iloite and that the peridot is from the same company.

I am not a blue fan... Not for personal taste. I try to stay away from sapphires and when I think Blue I think of sapphire. BUT!!! I lOVE looking at others blue stones... But most of the time.. blue just doesn''t "speak" to me.. U-know?

Connita~ Thanks for the suggestion. IMO tanzanite is over marketed and that is why it is so exspensive. I ahve never really seen one in person that I liked though. I think it has something to do with how it looks like the color just "fades" around with the background.

So I would defienteyl prefer a tzavorite.. but not yet.. Iwant a nice setting and finances will not go with that right now.

Hmmmmmm.... tourmaline could be nice. I almost got one for my E-ring.. hmmmm.. thinkng now...

I wasn''t a Tanzanite fan until I was out of town and saw a real Tanzanite. The Jewelry store here had the washed out color and had never seen real Tanzanite with the red flashes...it is absolutely bueatiful. But it you are not a fan of blue then it is not for you. Peridot is nice when it is a really nice quality. I understand Pakistani Peridot is the best. The different origins have different colors of green. I have a 2.5ct. Chinese Peridot cushion cut I will make into a pendent oneday.I understand that Peridot may have been found on Mars....

So you can say it is out of this world!!!

I am with Kaleigh about the Tsavorite, if a med color and not to dark!!!

BTW they say Iolite(the Water Sapphire) is the next Tanzanite...People are buying that if they can not get the Tanzies. . . .Turn the Iolite over and it is a different color from the bottom .... that is how you tell it from Tanzanite.Although I have not seen that much Iolite ...maybe 1 stone in person and was not impressed with it ..... Good luck

My two cents here.

Since this is going into a ring, you need to address the durability, hardness and toughness of the stone.

I would suggest you consider how delicately the ring will be worn, especially if you elect to choose a stone that is softer.

I''d also consider how saturate in color you want the stone to be, as well as how sparkly you want it to be.

Peridot is a nice stone, however in time the facet junctions CAN abrade - so you need to be aware that it may have to be repolished in time.

Chorme Tourmaline is nice too - if you want the deep saturate green color, however, there are tourmalines that are "apple green" too.

If the stone is going to be set in a bezel, that could be a tad of a problem taking it out and resetting it again. If you like the green color stone, I''d suggest tsavorite, or possibly green saphirre. You might also consider an irradiated green diamond, as they are priced affordably.

If you finally elect to go with a blue color stone, Spinel might be a good candidate as well. Just have to be careful of extinction in them.

Hope this helps.

Mine, the appraiser for my spess ring has suggested that tsav would be worth my time investigating. we both know what good spess does and apparently good tsav does the same....looks like a green diamond if done right.

green sapphire would be my next choice followed by chrome green tourmaline or even possibly mint green.....but tourmaline isn''t going to have the sparkle factor of tsav garnet.

Just make a list of gemstones

and as you get them mark them off and add to the bottom of the list. It just gets longer. I have Soo many RHR of color & working on more...Oh never satisfied...too much out there .I have Tsavorite ordered and should be here this week...Hope it is not too dark...

I''m a peridot fan myself. So I say go with the peridot :)

I also agree with some of the others that a green sapphire would be nice.

peridot! I have an emerald cut peridot in a rhr like the photo you have and I love it. I wear it all the time.

I vote peridot...LOVE this ring of Catmom''s...swoon!!

There are some other stones you could consider as well. Although I love Tsavorites and Tanzanites, they are significantly pricer than Peridot and Iolite in decent quality. Same goes for the nice Chrome Tourmalines for that matter.

If you are looking for a reasonable green stone, Chrome Diopside might be a good choice for you or some of the lighter green Tourmalines. For the violet color, if you don''t mind a little more reddish purple there are some wonderful Amethysts for very reasonable prices.
