I always take two photos and show them side-by-side. One which tries to capture the natural color (without showing the star), and the second which shows the best star I can get under a beam.

You might try using the high intensity LED lights such as the Streamlight Stylus to bring out the star. http://www.streamlight.com/stylus_specifications.htm

Edward,

Took a look at your site. www.wildfishgems.com Very interesting approach. The country seems beautiful.

Richard Sheerwood, thanks a lot. We will try.

Richard Wise: I know my website but I don;t understand the connection to photos of star sapphire, but yes, however, Sri Lanka is a beautyfull country. I know it since I was 8. The upcountries are stunning once u are there. The eastcoast is like a different planet. But Colombo is quite a nightmare mostly. Too busy. Come for a visit anytime. Worlds end is so good!

Does anyone know how to make good photos of star sapphire? Any tricks out there?

Edward, no trick, but this digital image was just made in mild morning direct sunlight at about 34 N. 118 W. The quality of the stone is very poor due to color and inclusions. I cut it years ago as an exercise in learning about asterism in corundum and it''s the only star I have on hand at the moment. The color, unfortunately for me, is accurate.

You don''t mention the kind of camera you''re using. If digital make sure the white balance is set for daylight. If you have an EV adjustment it often helps to lower it for slight underexposure to offset the sun''s brightness. This image has not been electronically adjusted beyond cropping and a slight lowering of brightness. I''d love to be able to experiment with some fine Serendip or Malagasy star gems!

Yes, this pic came out very well considering the circumstances.

Currently raining here nonstop. I will wait for the next clear day and try it in morning sun. I''ll post it if successful. Unfortunately our stars are not much better than yours. all pale colors.

We use a nikon 5400 and a canon IXY

many thanks.

I made my image with an obsolete Sony Mavica -- I had my Nikon on a tripod and didn''t want to disturb the set-up. The Sony''s resolution is very poor as you can see, and either of your cameras should make a much sharper and more detailed image. I don''t know what kind of macro capability your cameras have but suspect your Nikon will be as good or better than my 4500. Hope the rain stops soon.
