Well, I am not the best envelope addresser and I know this is a controversial topic, but did you do your addressing like Mr. and Mrs. John Smith, or Mr. John and Mrs. Jane Smith, or Mr. and Mrs. Smith? I know some people get offended by the first option, but I don''t foresee that happening with any of our family or friends, pretty traditional people.

I did ours per the Crane ettiquete section of their website:

"Mr. and Mrs. John Smith"

I couldn''t decide how to do ours either since save the dates are more casual, but I figured to air on the side of formality rather than too casual.

What got tricky was: Ms. Mary Smith and Mr. John Johnson...we had a couple of families with the women who kept their last name. Try looking up Crane''s Invitations and they have a whole section on how to address doctors, different last names, etc.

Thanks Lanie I will check Crane''s site out, I completely forgot about that as a resource!!

on this topic is it weird to use labels for the addresses? i know it would look ridiculous on the actual invitations... im about to start my diy project and i was just wondering. my mom sent all the labels already printed out and i dont know what to do lol

Hey Sarah,

I googled addressing invites and a number of sources said to use the Mr. and Mrs. John Smith way, so that is what I did. When you have two last names, you do as you mentioned, Mr. John Smith and Mrs. Jane Doe. I just sent out my STD''s, which are more informal as well, but I figured I would not want to organize all the invites twice (once for the STD''s and once for the actual invites) so I just used the more formal addressing.

Regarding the Doctors, Lawyers, etc, spell out the names and do as so: Doctor John and Mrs. Smith. If plurals, say Doctors John and Jane Doe. One exception is in the case of PhD''s. You can actually use Dr. in that, such as Dr. Jane Doe.

Smurfy: I used labels for the STD''s. It''s such a time saver, especially considering I sent out 100+ STD''s. Also, the company who printed our STD''s, Magnet Street, offered return labels to match the STD''s, so I used those as well. I don''t see any problem with it for the STD''s. However, for the actual invite, I will probably not use them, but we will see how stressed I am later in the process...
