I agree that there is no one solution -- everyone should do what works for them! I think you really only run into problems if you both have vastly different ideas on spending and savings...
The husband and I have all joint checking and savings accounts, with the obvious individual retirement accounts. We make similar salaries, but all of our money is pooled together, bills are automatically paid online each month, money is automatically moved to savings, and we have a joint "spending" account for the fun stuff! We each have an equal amount of spending money budgeted for the month. We never have fights about money.
