I'm looking to sell a few jewelry pieces in the next couple of months. If you don't mind sharing, how do you ship items worth $500 or less? What is the most cost effective, yet still safe method? I only use registered mail for expensive items. Also, do you include shipping in your price, or do you charge extra? Thanks!!

Are you listing on Diamond Bistro or Ebay.

I can only address ebay. As a seller, in order to be protected, any item over $250 must have signature confirmation. I send it USPS Priority Mail (In a small box) with insurance and signature confirmation. Under $250, I send it USPS with tracking and insurance. This is for domestic shipping only in the US. As a seller since 1999, I have not had a problem yet.

Unless it is an extremely expensive item, I have found that buyers on ebay do not have the patience to wait for Registered Mail.

If you send it to another country, you would have to use Global International through UPS or Fed Ex. UPS insures up to $500. Fed Ex insures up to $1,000. It is very expensive, though.

I set my price a bit more, and then offer free shipping with insurance within the US.

Regular mail can be insured up to $5000, so that is what I'd do. Delivery confirmation is good, too. On DB, I don't think it matters whether you include shipping in your price or charge for it separately as you'll consider that when setting your bottom price. I'd make sure you say that international shipping will be extra, though, or either do not offer it.

Thanks so much ladies!

ruby, can you please give me an idea as to how much insurance generally is? For, say, an item around $300?

With USPS within US $300 should be around $5.

Thanks minmin! I bet UPS or FedEx is cheaper then. I can ship for $8 total, and that's with declared value insurance plus the shipping cost.

I don't take chances, even with items less than $500. I always insure the item via USPS, and I get an online tracking number. The tracking number that is provided with the insured bit isn't trackable online, and I know that people like to see the tracking. I think it's a dollar extra, but to me, it's worth it.

I have found three postal workers that ignore the signature part, and just dump the item on the porch ( :angryfire: ) or wherever, and so the online tracking is very important to me.
