As a former cashier, I know that there is a cash benefit attached to their EBT accounts where the recipient can withdraw cash from ATMs to pay for non-food items like toilet paper, detergent, etc.
Of course, I have no idea if the lady in question is an EBT recipient or not.
All I know, is that I witnessed security guards stopping her at the door with stolen items in her purse.
Cash benefits are sometimes in conjunction with EBT but oftentimes do not happen at all. I say that as someone who has applied for and used benefits but was denied cash because i had to prove that my child’s father was paying support (or ordered to) and that wasn’t the case. ETA: I’m really not trying to be a dick but it really pisses me off that you speak with such authority and you’re wrong on this. The privilege is UNBELIEVABLE.
All of this is complicated and no one person has the same thing going on. When I was 17 years old and had never been out in the world and cashiered in a grocery store, I came from incredible privilege and my co-workers and I used to legit laugh at and gossip about people who bought groceries with food stamps. We knew what cars they drove. We knew where they lived (small town.) We really and truly thought we were better than those people and we begrudged them driving Lincolns or anything “nice.” We certainly hated that they were able to buy soda and steaks.
We just didn’t like that they could have what we thought they weren’t supposed to have.
