If a diamond looks great right under the light but bad when I''m looking down at it with my head blocking the light, is that because the cut is not as good as it could be? Or is it just inevitable that a diamond will not look as good with some of the light being blocked?

Cup your hand around the stone to block out the light--view it this way, and assess its brilliance. Well cut stones will remain bright.

I guess it's white/bright, but it just doesn't seem to sparkle unless I hold my hand far out from my body. I wish it looked as good close up as it does far away. It looks great in my bathroom mirror when I hold my hand out!

*edit* I feel like other people could appreciate it more than me, because it seems to look better at a distance. I want a diamond that looks really good to me.

type "head obstruction" in the search box--many informative threads come up about this.

Do you have the proportions of the diamond, depth, table and so on?
