How to Learn?

To learn all about pearls, I signed up for a pearl class. To learn about colored gems, I got a few books. Im currently interested in learning about antique rings and jewelry. Are books the best way to go? If so, can you recommend a few? My interest is purely for hobby reasons so nothing too academic nor too basic. Thanks!
