How to reset my original e-ring sapphire?

Go goth. Dark metal and a dark but contrasting halo and/or trilliants. Substantial setting, nothing dainty. A RHR index or middle finger ring.

I am obsessed with Yvonne's lily ring and just before I saw your post I was looking at this layout and thinking "this is basically the lily ring!" lol

@elle_71125 I know you have a large lily ring with paraiba and spinel, and the center spinel appears to be larger than the standard for the setting. Do you happen to know the size of your center gem per chance?

I don’t think I like the Lily layout for these stones as much. I didn’t even take a picture lol! My center stone is much more elongated than the center in those designs, which is 5mm.

I also like the medieval vibes of the inspiration. The layout is called “cruciform”, and while I am not religious, I love Tudor English history — minored in that period in undergrad. So that connection feels good.

I do also have a suite of 5mm OECs I could use for this project if I was really wanting to go all out. Either bigger just on the sides or bigger all around. Would be huge!

And yes @ItsMainelyYou , absolutely the antique style!

This would be a lot of dress for a sapphire that was described as “not very good quality” by a jeweler one time :lol-2:
 
Agreed! No I just need to find two more little diamonds lol. The picture includes two diamonds and two CZ. The small blue stones are synthetic spinel I got just for playing around with. I think I would just have the jewler source those little ones (3mm) so the color matched my sapphire. It should not be hard as its a very common royal/midnight blue.

Which, by the way, yesterday in the sun the sapphire really lit up and was a beautiful share of blue! I couldn't capture it on camera at all. But it was nice to see! She ranges from a bright royal blue in the sun to a dark navy in dim lighting. Not all that different from the inspiration.

Here are some other inspiration rings I foun, with a darker blue sapphire. They seem common in this era of jewelry.

I also like this one a lot, but I think I prefer the addition of blue to the surround diamonds. It’s French belle epoch I believe.

Some have the gems set into a frame. I like that. This is a modern interpretation by Caleb Meyer. I don’t like the gallery but the proportions are interesting.

I toyed around with these. The base ring is from Sholdt. But the metal work is not refined enough for my taste.

Interesting! I haven't read much on the period since undergrad, but that looks cool!

This is more what I am in to lol The Death of Kings: A catalogue of the ailments of Britain's monarchs of from Edward the Confessor to Victoria, written by a surgeon. Using the most up-to-date research, Brewer interprets historic accounts of symptoms, odd behaviour and murder to identify the cause of death for each monarch, including new diagnoses for the conditions of Queen Anne and George III. The book concludes with a location list of royal tombs.

Ever since I saw your sapphire I haven’t been able to get the idea of a step-cut diamond halo around the sapphire out of my head (something similar to the reset that @lulu_ma designed for her mom’s (diamond) EC, if I remember correctly). Then I saw the diamond OEC side stones you bought and had another crazy idea - what if you do a diamond halo around the sapphire (step or round melee) and then sapphire halos around the diamonds? And set them in a 3 stone?

But having seen this arrangement… I like it better than my halo 3-stone idea!!

These are such interesting ideas, thank you so much! I think one place I was feeling a little stuck with this project is that I felt instinctively I didn’t really want a three stone. At some point t thr last week I kind of fell into the idea of this being more of a dinner ring, proportion and style wise. Definitely not an engagement style ring. This really opened my mind and the options. At this moment I’m really liking this compass style setting. I think it would be really fun to wear and a real statement piece with the blue and white alternating pattern. It has me feeling a little excited about my sapphire!

I’m actually really digging the compass style idea too! I like it better than my original suggestion :D

In terms of side-stone size, I like it with the 5mm OECs (especially since you already have them) - but I would do all 5mm or all 4mm. I don’t like the mix of sizes. However, the 4mm stones put the focus on the sapphire, while the 5mm stones make it more of a “composite” ring - by which I mean that no one stone/aspect is being highlighted more than the other. So it depends if you want to think of this primarily as a sapphire ring, or if you’d rather think of it as a “diamond and sapphire” ring.

The other thing that you could do is, use 4mms for this project (so you have to buy 2 more 4mm diamonds), and also get another 5/5.5/6mm diamond eventually and turn your suite of OECs into a sizeable and stunning 5-stone ring, perhaps for your index or middle finger…

This is the plan! I have another thread in RT on my anniversary ring, which I’m planing to make a sizeable five stone. So I think we have settled on searching for two more 4mm stones for this sapphire ring, and some flavour of compass style setting. However, I want to set the five stone first. So that project takes priority at the moment.

Love it with the smaller sides. LOVE the cruciform layout! And I know exactly what you mean - something about that layout is really balanced and restful and "right".

This is going to be killer!

I think I posted an estimate earlier in the thread, but it was incorrect! I got my new calipers and it is 5 x 6.3mm. So a nice size I think for a cluster design. Won't be too huge!
