I just wanna say -- the random comments thread

I am apparently on a one-woman crusade to rid my company of horrible PowerPoint presentations.

I'm going to fail miserably, but dammit I'm going to make the effort.

sounds like theres not much more you can do! sometimes teenagers won't change their habits no matter what you say or do. In the end they have to decide to do it for themselves. they might not listen to you advice on brushing but a regular check, clean and lecture from a dentist might help :P i love it when i see a kid booked in with a note attached parents want the kid to get a lecture. means i don't have to pussy foot around and can really give them a talking to.

The plaque tablets are usually useful but i guess you still need to have some motivation

lately I've been trying for shock factor. if the kid doesn't seem to care about what I'm saying to convince them i ask them if they've ever smelt poo breath before. humans or maybe the family dog who's breath smells like poo? its not because the human or animal is eating poo its because the bacteria in gum disease and other nasties actually smell a bit like poo. and the boys/girls arn't going to like that.

usually gets a little smirk out of the parents

I'm more than happy to send across a Proteus culture, so you can prove your point. Other than Morganella, there is no stinkier bug -- and that's what can gain direct access via caries. Gross. :knockout:

DO IT!!!! I'm right there with you!

I just had a colleague "edit" a submitted draft of a PPT by DOUBLING the number of content slides (it's supposed to be a 7-ish minute presentation with 3-5 min for Q&A...I made a 10 slide presentation, including title, question, and thank you slides) and adding "meat"...ie GIANT BULLETED LISTS OF STUFF. :errrr:  :nono: You did not add "meat"...you just disconnected us from the audience completely and made this entire exercise useless.

That is NOT the point of a PPT, ladies and gents!!!

SB, I'll keep you up to date on how it's going. My guess is I'll fail dramatically, but I'm hoping to at least not contribute to the mess!

Yep!
We haul her in regularly and the staff all know that they can be as direct with her as they want. Don't like the x-rays? Tough. (they use the small ones so it is as painless as possible). Don't like the cleaning? Sit still anyway. Get BACK in the chair.
They've even hauled out gory videos on what happens to uncared for teeth/gums :knockout:

The whole reason we are dealing with this is because her mom is one of those people you have to tip toe around. She hardly allowed any x-rays or actual exam. A simple cleaning was "too hard" and required multiple breaks to allow "A" to wander the building and feel better. No suction to clean mouth. No....
You get the idea!

So "A" was told (even as old as 7, possibly longer) that she didn't have to brush her teeth because those teeth didn't matter anyways. Even now her mother tries to convince me that we shouldn't be "forcing" her to brush her teeth or go to the dentist! :nono:

You certainly have a tough job! I'd hate to deal with parents all day -- and trying to tell who really wants the kid taught good practices and who just wants the toy at the end

Dear Amazon,

I love ordering from you. I DO NOT love if you can't give me the tracking information. How, oh HOW can I effectively stalk the mail man if I"m not sure when my package will arrive??? :loopy: I'm dying to play with my new stamper on my nails and I can't do that until it gets here. Sigh. I ordered a stamper and plates and my sister's wedding is on Saturday. I want to get over the learning curve and have gorgeous nails NOW!

Sincerely,
Impatient SOG nail addict :lickout:

My patience is wearing thin should be my theme for today.

TP side note but did you read that drug company did end up (under great public demand) letting that little boy be part of a drug study so he could have free access to what will hopefully save his life?

I did! I was so very happy to see that!

The company is saying that it is because of the FDA and the whole approval process. I'm sure there is a lot of delay in the process. I don't really care if it is the FDA or the company doing whatever part. Both sides need to pull it together because while they bicker and play games with each other, people are dying. My great-uncle died when he couldn't get a treatment that wasn't approved yet. There are probably LOTS of people out there in the same boat. I hate to see people made to suffer as part of a game :nono:

OMG, these posts had me cracking up!! My favorites (not) are the presentations that consist of slides w/ multiple bullets that are actually links to additional sets of slides that also have links. When the person presenting is asked to go back to a specific slide or graph, etc they can't find it in the tangle of links on top of links on top of more links. Drives me bananas every time!

OMG! I would seriously consider putting a blunt pencil through my eyeball if I had to sit through that.

Now my random thought of the day but why does my house in germany not have a freezer? The fridge is bad enough, it is tiny think of what you had in your door room- and NO freezer. We are a family of 4 and I have no idea where to put stuff. Maybe that is what everyone is no skinny? They have no freezer for ice cream and cookie dough????

I am craving McDonald's pizza.

DH offered to get meba snack, but unless he has a method of time travel I will have to make due with pizza pockets.

LOL I am so not in touch with fast-food places. I didn't even know that McDonald's had pizza on their menu haha. Last time I was in a McDonald's (over 30 years ago!) all I remember them having were burgers, fries, shakes and sodas. :o

Hope you enjoyed your pizza (pockets) chemgirl!

Thanks Missy!

They don't have pizza anymore! They used to have mini pizza in Canada in the 90's. They were a staple of my childhood. The bake time was ridiculous so they were cut from the menu.

They were probably horrible, but try telling that to 13-year-old me.

Yippee! Yesterday I received the Stamping plates that I ordered! Now to wait for the stamper! ;( ;( ;( ;( Sigh. Amazon shipping says it's shipped and is expected to be here from the 20th to the 25... and that's it! Can't even stalk the mailman! Where's the stomping-my-feet-like-a-2-year-old smilie???

When we lived in the Netherlands (very early 60's) very few people even had refrigerators! We lived in a relatively modern house that had a cold cellar but no refrigerator. It was a big deal when someone got a refrigerator freezer. I remember visiting a relative's house when they got one, and they gave us a bag of frozen juice cubes (think popsicles without sticks) to take home - via bicycle, of course - as a treat.

:D :D :D I got my stamper yesterday! Got to play with it last night :D So much fun!!!!

So sad -- the number of missing in the landslide has risen to nearly 200.

So angry too!

I know everyone is doing the best they can, but they can't even give a somewhat accurate count of how many are missing. The whole thing (call this number.... no! call this number...) just seems very disorganized. If that list of 200 (176? 185? 208?) may be much smaller because a lot of people may have been reported multiple times, why can't they go through the list and look for duplicates!?! If the person reporting can give the address so they can not toss off someone who happens to have a common name I would think that would at least be a start.

I can't imagine what the families are going through. We live a couple of hours away and know people who have friends and family missing. They have enough to deal with already without having phone numbers swapped and needing to report missing to multiple different places.

We have bunches of stuff I was going to drop off for donation later in the week. I'm going to leave it sitting for now so we can get it to the many families who lost everything. It seems so small... I wish there was more we could do.

Thanks VR!!! My mother said the same thing to me. She lived in France in the 70's and did not have the luxury for a fridge or freezer either. Ahhh the things we take for granite I guess :P We actually did end up getting a full size fridge with a freezer section on top to put in our basement. They came to deliver it and it wouldn't fit down our curved staircase so now it is set up in the corner of our dinning room. I see our neighbors peeking through the window all the time at our full size fridge sitting in the corner by our table and scratching their heads. I'm sure they think we are crazy!

LOL I would totally do the same Sarah if I lived there-I need my freezer and full size fridge for sure! I have friends who live in Italy and they also have a tiny fridge and I think very small freezer and they go to the market almost every day. It can be a lovely way to live but it's a luxury (time to go food shopping and preparing every day) many of us cannot afford. Hope you are enjoying your adventure so far-and have fun on your Switzerland trip!

I am getting ready to go to a new gastroenterologist today because I am not getting any relief from my symptoms even with all the meds I am currently taking. I'm a bit nervous because I have a lot resting on this appointment. So far no doctor has been able to figure it all out or even help me obtain pain relief so if you could all just think good thoughts for me and send PS dust for good luck and healing I would be so appreciative...thanks! :wavey:

Good luck missy, much dust to you!

I dreamt about a landslide last night where 40 people died and 178 people went missing, then told my husband about it this morning. He went a bit pale, then turned on the TV to the news and I learnt about the landslide in the US. I'm a bit freaked out now. I was dreaming repeatedly about plane crashes before MH370 went down (so specific details though). I ignore it mostly as I dream about natural disasters quite a lot so I've put it down to coincidence. Right?? :errrr:

I used to have dreams like that all the time. It was horrible!

From what I'm seeing on Twitter and FB, it sounds like it would be a miracle if there were only 40 dead. So many home since it was the weekend :((

LOTS of support from the community. It sounds like they are now allowing volunteers to start helping in the search. Other people are organizing meals for the survivors and rescuers. I've even seen people offering their vacant homes for families to have somewhere to stay for a few months.
Another dog was found alive yesterday so there is still some hope.
Groups caring for animals who have owners missing. People trying to match up found animals with survivors.

I'm very glad the river hasn't flooded as they feared it could. I hope that continues! They had been talking about the debris breaking loose and flash flooding hitting the homes down the river. Lots of people on notice to evacuate in a hurry as needed.

The rain is coming back soon (maybe today). Not sure how that affects the mud and the slide area...

Hugs and dust Missy! I hope it goes well!

Getting a little antsy to get my ring back - I sent it out to BGD for a reset exactly one month ago, and still no ETA on when I'll get it back. :( Although I guess it will be all the more exciting to receive it once it's ready. But at this point I just want to have something on my finger again!

Thanks Rosetta, TooPatient and Sarah! I saw the new gastroenterologist and think he knows his stuff. First of all he was the first one to actually listen to me and what's been happening. First my shingles and then these weird symptoms starting in mid Feb culminating into this severe esophagitis among other things.

He told me though no patient wants to hear these words- that my case is "interesting" and one for the journals. Great LOL but at least I feel he is trying to figure it out. Unfortunately I need another endoscopy and that's been scheduled tomorrow at 8AM. Second one in a month, sigh. They are not pleasant.

I am just hoping and praying he can figure out what's going on with my body and actually help me. That a successful treatment exists for what I have once he figures out what that is.

Good luck tomorrow Missy! I hope it goes as smoothly as possible and finds you some answers.

Mudslide is now up to 16 confirmed dead plus another 8 bodies located. Still nearly 200 on the list of missing and even though that contains duplicates, it may not include people driving on the road or doing work in the area... or families who are all missing with no one to report.

They had so many volunteers they had to turn a bunch away.

The kids were back at school today for the first time since the slide. Trauma dogs and councilors were brought in to help the kids deal with the loss of their friends.
