thanks for the bump... was fun to read.... and here is mine.
my first car was an 84' Chrysler new yorker (complete with the plastic leather seats and TURBO!!) it was purchased from my grandparents for i believe 1500. it was quite a death trap however and i WISH my parents had spoiled me with new wheels. the floor board was rusted thru to the point where hard acceleration would rip the seat mounts thru the floor...leaving the driver in the back seat!!! nothing like holding onto the wheel for dear life (and holding the door shut in the winter time because they liked to freeze in the open position!)
on the opposite perspective. the first new car i bought. 2000 civic SI ....was stolen and stripped
so for me it was.....rusted underbody and broken seats.. vs. empty parking spot.

Right after we got married, my sister sold us this 1962 Chevy Impala. We bought the car in 1980 and installed one seatbelt for our daughter's carseat. This baby was BIG and had no power steering or brakes. This is my MIL and daughter in front of it.

aaahhhh broken clucth in CA that brings back memories. i used to live on top of russian hill and have seen many tourists facing similar problems. it was a daily event to hear someone burning tires or clutch while climbing the back side of lombard street....waiting in line to drive down the famed twisty road at the front.

For the cold days, I bought a 66 Dodge Charger with a supercharged 383 (by that time, I was hooked on speed). It was faaassssttttt, and street racing was ''the thing'' in El Paso at that time.
hee hee. I had a 72 gold Ford Tourino! V8, 454 (I think) LOTS of power and appetite for gas, handed down from Mom. It too had every corner bashed in. Parking by braile with a car that big was a way of life without even trying! I've never had a big car again. I've continually gotten smaller and now have a tiny BMW Roadster. I can park it anywhere, and it is dent-free!Date: 4/4/2005 1:17:30 PM

This is too funny. What memories! I had a 1973 Delta 88 with a 454 under the hood. That baby never passed a gas station and I ran out of gas so frequently that the local attendants would see me coming (coasting) trying to make it too the pump and would run out and help me push. It got like 10 mpg and that was on a good day. (highway driving) I could only put $3.00 of gas in at a time......
My Dad bought it for $1,500.00 from a customer (he was a mechanic) because he had worked on the car and he knew it was in good shape. Until I got a hold of it, that is...He believed that a person should start out with a BIG car for protection and if you drive a big one, you could drive anything....
I backed into everything there was to back into..... There wasn't a square inch of that car that was dent free. Good thing he got me a big one. She was tough, though.
I guess it worked out, though because I love a big ride now. My 'car' now, 25 years later, is a full size Z71 extended cab p/u truck. Dent free, btw..........
