Hi all. First I must thank everyone on this wonderful site, your info is invaluable! I'm trying to figure out an engagement ring for my GF. I've been lurking here for about a month, absorbing as much info as I can. I have a fairly small budget of $3k (max). I am having a hard time finding a setting, but am heavily leaning toward antique settings. I am looking for something simple, elegant, and a bit unique. Neither of us are jewelery buffs, but we both gravitate toward that style.

Now I came across a ring for sale. I love the setting and I know my GF would too. I am unsure about a couple things though. First the ring is currently a size 4.25 and my GF is a size 6. Is it possible to size up that far? I know the engraving would be effected but other than that I assume it will be possible? Next thing is the diamond. I have no idea how to judge what this thing is worth or if its any good. Its GIA certed (#2125161588), European cut, 1.2ct, VVS1, L color, and scores 0.9 on the HCA. The color concerns me too. I know color is a personal thing and I'm not sure how my GF would feel about it (or even notice it?). The seller is asking $3000.

I guess I'm just thinking out loud here. Looking for a second opinion. Is there anything about this ring that jumps out at you that I'm not seeing?

Thanks so much for any words of wisdom.

WOW!
elegant, elegant, elegant!
from the pics it could EG?
Some savvy experts will chime in about up sizing.

Is this a private party sale? The image used is from http://www.jewelsbyericagrace.com so if it is by another vendor, there is something fishy going on there.

Since it is an OEC, do not use the HCA, that is only applicable to modern round brilliant.

Also, there are more OEC in the more tinted range as the more colorless stones are usually re-cut into modern brilliant.

EDT:
The setting main stone is not the same stone, looks like a modern brilliant is mounted.

The ring is listed on ebay by a private seller. The pics are directly from the sellers listing. I suppose its possible the seller purchased the ring or stone from JbEG? I dont really know.

I didnt even notice that they were not the same stone until you said something, I see it now. interesting

Too weird as the setting is not mounted with an OEC. I think it is a rip off, I would contact JbEG and ask them if they have sold a setting like that with that stone. Looks more like a mis-representation by the ebay seller, grabbing pics off JbEG's site.

The stone in the setting in those images is not the stone being offered for sale, so ask about that.

Seems fishy all around. I like the style and the diamond is lovely, but worry about the security of the transaction.

The diamond in the ring is definitely not the same diamond as shown in the loose pictures. I used to own the 1.21 OEC in the loose diamond pics. Please be very weary when dealing with this person...something is definitely not right. Sorry.

ETA: didn't mean to sound mean...sorry. Like setting though.

Red flags for sure... Proceed with caution... Please..

Hi There, is this two separate and different transactions? one for the ring (semi mount without the diamond) and one for the diamond?

I've seen that diamond (only the loose diamond) listed for sale on **edited by moderator** for $2500 but the GIA certs says it is a ROUND Brilliant, there is no Cert # on the picture, and something smells a bit fishy to me as well, if anything I would thought it would be listed by GIA as a traditional or so, but NOT round Brilliant. I would definitely contact Jewels by Erica Grace, becuase it looks very similar to her pictures that she has up of her diamonds and ask her about selling this diamond and perhaps that the buyer is just now trying to sell it. Not sure I know I'm being paranoid, but just being overly cautious. since it doesn't mesh the ring and diamond

I scream.... SCAM SCAM! The diamond in the setting is absolutly not European cut, 1.2ct, VVS1, L color!

Oh what a pity about the shady seller. The ring is beautiful.

I hope it can work out somehow, good luck.

Well I talked to both jbEG and the seller. Turns out JbEG did sell the stone to the ebay seller. The seller purchased the setting from another vendor, minus the stone that was originally in it. The seller was using the pics from both JbEG and this other vendor (the JbEG stone had not yet been set in the ring for this pic) instead of their own pics.

And after all of that the ebay seller ended up selling the stone separately and is now just selling the setting. I LOVE the setting but its just not in the budget to buy both this setting and a 1+ct stone to fit it. Does anyone happen to know of anything similar for a reasonable price?

You want a 1.2 carat ring set for $3k? I'm not sure if this is a realistic budget...

Suppose that you want a just white gold or gold setting -- expect to pay at least $300+ for a basic solitaire setting (just the setting alone). That leaves $2700 for the diamond. To get a 1.2 carat stone in that price range in any shape (OEC, round, etc), you would have to go way way down in any of color, clarity, and cut. For example, JBeG lists a (sold) champagne-colored diamond on her website that was in your budget, but it was just a loose stone (so the setting cost would have to be factored in) and champagne-colored is a way of describing a light-brown diamond where the color isn't intense enough to describe it as a fancy color -- some people like it, some people don't -- so that's a risk if your gf doesn't see it beforehand.

Now, if you could settle for a little under 1 carat (say larger than 0.9 ct), I think you might be able to find a lot of options. There are some vintage-y rings at in this price range, for example:

Btw (for comparison), JBeG has a ring very similar to the eBay ring, set with a 1.43 L/K VS1 OEC for $7k:

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. I absolutely do not want or expect a 1.2ct (or even a 1ct) diamond ring for 3k. I just happen to come across this one on ebay and fell in love with setting. I would be perfectly happy with a stone in the .65 to .8ct range.
thanks everyone for the advice!

We can help you more if you can tell us the shape of the diamond (round, OEC, princess, cushion, EC, etc) and your color and clarity parameters.

Btw, the broken link in my last post -- go to www.antiqueengagementrings.com and click on "Engagement Rings" and then click on page 8. (That's where the rings in your budget start.) HoyaLawyaBride got her ring there and it's a beaut: download/file.php?id=249838
