I think I'm done buying blue sapphires

This is going to age like fine milk, isn't it.

I know, I know, I said I'm on ban island, I said that I'm not doing any new projects because the price of gold decided to climb Mt. Everest. The Lily ring was going to be it for the year. That aged like fine milk, too.

And the culprit is this little fella, who sneaked up on me:

1731062462169.jpeg

(Those are tiny rubber hair ties wrapped around the tweezer tips. We're DIY-ing it here. )

And when I say sneak up, I do mean it. Bought it preloved so it was a one hell of a deal. The previous owner is an internet acquaintance who got it six years ago and it's been sitting in a box ever since, abandoned. They know I'm easily tempted by blue sapphires, they also knew what I wanted in one, and just offered it to me. One day, out of the blue, here, check this out! Do you like it? Have it! What was I supposed to do?

The sapphire is 2,09ct., 7,00 x 6,12 x 5,41mm. Heated, of course, ain't no one got the budget for unheated while on ban island. It has a lab report from AIGS from 2018 and it was freshly repolished because it was pretty digned up before. I didn't ask for a new report, it's not necessary. The stone has some very characteristic inclusions that are perfectly visible in the AIGS video (yeah, they do those with their reports, did you know?), it's obvious it's the same stone. Origin is unknown, but I'm considering dropping by the office of the local gemologist to get their opinion at some point.

The first thing I did when it arrived was put it to the test - how is it going to hold up against my original 2ct sapphire? That one is my benchmark for saturation.

1731064562234.jpeg

I've been chasing the same level of intensity in a lighter coloured sapphire and have slowly come to realise it's probably never going to happen (or at the very least, if it does, it won't be within my price range). This level of saturated blue seems to be intrinsically tied to a darker tone, a darker stone.

So I was very happy to see this little one hold his own. It doesn't disappear next to the other one. They share the spotlight.

1731065249862.jpeg

1731065257541.jpeg

Just to be clear, it's still not as saturated, and it shows in lower light.

1731065305126.jpeg

By the way, when taking this picture I incidentally discovered the best angle to observe the pleocrhoism, but I was only able to successfully photograph it once:

1731065402772.jpeg

Looks cool, eh? :P2

Anyways, the big advantage of this new sapphire over the old one (and the reason I was still looking for a sapphire) is this one retains the blue without blacking out better when there isn't much light available:

1731065487617.jpeg

I mentioned characteristic inclusions above.

1731065830323.jpeg

There is a very sizable veil that is easy to see only through the pavilion. Through the crown you need strong focused light source and the right angle. Next to it are two other round inclusions but I can't see them well enough under the loupe to guess what they are.

It also has colour zoning:

1731067076623.jpeg

You wouldn't have guessed by the previous photos. :D

And while we're on the subject of colour zoning, look what happens to the clear part of the stone under LWUV:

I've never had a sapphire with orange fluorescence before. Managed to track down some info from articles published on GIA's website. Apparently orange fluorescence occurs in clear or very light blue zoned areas, and it's common in all metamorphic sapphires. As per the sources, there's more on the subject in Hughes's book Ruby and Sapphire, so if anyone's curious, I guess that's the place to look.

I've saved the best for last - the photos in sunlight. I spent a fair bit of time on the balcony this morning, just... staring. Yes, it really does look like this. Yes, I find it hard to believe, too.

1731067517615.jpeg

1731067529922.jpeg

Okay, the phone maybe overdid it by a tiny bit on the last one. :DBut boy, does this gem love the sun.

So this is it, folks. For the first time I'm not wishing for something more in a blue sapphire. It is beyond me how this one slipped through the cracks in order to eventually reach me. Yes, it's flawed, but it's still stunning. For the time being I don't know what I'm doing with it, aside from putting it in a ring with a more open setting, to allow all the possible light to flood it. In any case, that will 100000% have to wait till next year. I am going back to ban island.

Love the story, and the blues ! They are both so eye catching and they look terrific together! :kiss2:
I like that little patch of orange. It is a bit like a hidden message.

Electric!!!

…and congratulations!

Thank you! And it is electric, indeed! Let me tell you, it was so nice for once to receive a blue stone that wasn't disappointing in person compared to its photos and videos. My eyes are feasting.

I do try my best to entertain and I'm glad you found it enjoyable! ::)

Exquisite color! I’d come off on Ban Island for that stone.

And this is why I haven't told anyone in my life other than my husband, but I've shared it all with you guys and gals. I know where I'll find understanding. My friends, on the other hand, would be all like "it's pretty, but didn't you just buy a new ring?"

How come I just saw this (waving from the o so distant and cold cs ban island)
Love the story and of course the color. So happy for you to find this absolute deal. Congrats!!

That blue is amazing!!!! So glad you found it (or it found you) - meant to be! And welcome to Ban Island ;-)

Mmmm hot blue undervthe sun. Living vicariously. It is a beautiful stone. Happy for you!

Drooling here... Sapphire is my favorite stone, and that one is the perfect size and color! Beautiful!

This is lovely! A little disappointed that the thread did not live up to its '70s-era TV commercial vibe ("I'm done with men!").

It's also a great example of how knowing your own priorities can make sapphire buying more accessible. I have one not too dissimilar from that one, but maybe not as nice a color. Even has a similar 45-degree angle veil that is only rarely visible (full sun, random times) and is just barely eye-clean but, consequently, managed to stay within budget.

Madam. We all know why you're there. That Kashmir of yours will forever be the object of my envy. In fact, if you would be so kind to stay there, because I don't know whether my heart will be able to handle seeing the next acquisition if you decide to set the bar even higher.

I was born a decade later, so I'm unfamiliar with 70s ads and you've made me exceedingly curious now.

Rest assured I paddled myself there on my wallet - now that it's completely flat and won't float, I'm locked up there indefinitely :lol-2:

Beautiful sapphire! This may be an odd question - but I'm in the midst of trying to find "the one" for an engagement ring. One challenge is converting photos of sapphires in various light settings on my screen to what it might be in person (in various lighting). She wants a royal blue-but on the very dark end. Yours looks like it would fit the bill in the 'low ambient light' photo, but surprisingly it really brightens up in direct sunlight. Do you by chance have the original photos that the seller used so I can just kind of see how their sales photos compared to your various photos? (yes, I understand what 1 seller does for 1 particular gem and 1 particular set of photos will be completely different from another gem/photo set...but just looking for 1 datapoint to see how your sapphire originally looked in the electronic sales case).

In my experience, that's the case for many blue sapphires. They're quite dependent on light and there's a big range in the colour they display. If you're after a dark royal blue, you should expect that you'll only be able to see and enjoy the colour when the lighting conditions are just right. In lower light, it would black out.

If you're after a stone that will look more or less the same regardless of the light, a blue sapphire isn't likely to deliver. So you should manage your expectations.

Here, let me show you. It's the middle of the night for me right now, so we'll have to make do with one sunlight photo I have from before, and a couple in low light. The two extremes, but at least this way you'll be able to see the range, and I tried to play with the light a little.

I own 3 sapphire rings and the one loose stone. They vary from pastel blue to royal blue.

Photo in direct sun:

1731711697223.jpeg

Photo with my desk lamp at full light pointed at them:

1731711742471.jpeg

Photo with my desk lamp on low pointed at them:

1731711855629.jpeg

And finally, a photo with my desk lamp on low somewhere to the side, and just my bedroom light, which is the type of warm, soft light I prefer at home, but the sapphires hate:

1731711935825.jpeg

In this last photo all light is coming from the side, they aren't capturing and reflecting anything adequately. More or less the worst they could look. You'll see that only the pastel melee and the light coloured ring retain some colour adequately and still look distinguishably blue. One of the royal blues bleeds colour (it's silky, so it disperses light better in general, but not as saturated, hence the bleeding), the other one almost blacks out (it's very crystalline and has more of a darker body tone, combined with the very strong saturation, it's prone to blacking out easily, including in direct sun), and the loose stone just gets very dark blue.

Do you by chance have the original photos that the seller used so I can just kind of see how their sales photos compared to your various photos?

I do. They're mostly videos. But I should point out, I wasn't buying from a vendor. With vendors you can, more often than not, expect that they'll try to market their stones with the best possible pictures, in the best possible light and conditions. Since I was buying from another consumer, their priority was instead to create the most accurate visuals possible so that I knew what I was buying, even though I'd never set eyes on the stone before. What helped was we both used iphones, as that provides some level of consistency of the images between devices.

Here are some of their videos, I've labeled the lighting conditions for each one:

I hope that helps! Good luck on your sapphire hunt!

Me myself, I’d rather have a lighter cornflower one that stays pretty indoors than a deep royal, but blue sapphires seem happiest in the sun. Maybe you can take your fiance shopping and ask to see potential stones in different lights. I have a color change garnet that is almost black in low light. I wear it with black and it’s one of my favorite rings because my husband picked it out. Congratulations on your upcoming engagement!

I did something.

Do it!!! I’ve always wanted a three stone ring! I need to live vicariously through you!

I've wanted one for ages, too, that's why I bought these. The problem is... I think I really like these earrings. They're so damn cute! They're tiny, but they're bright and eye catching. And the backs are so comfy, studs usually poke me and I avoid them for that reason.

What size are they? Half carat each? Nm I just saw your post in the pre loved thread! So about .18 each. They are pretty. You could buy some colored gems from Yvonne to set in them if it’s the mountings that you really love?

So THIS is why you're on ban island! Well worth the exile.
