Just a question for curiosity only.....

Theoretically,
So if you have the absolute best ideal cut of each shape you could have.
Round brilliant (like a CBI, or ACA. etc..)
OEC (AVR )
cushion ( like AVC)
Asscher- (octavia)
emerald.. would like to throw this in .. but not sure if there are any ideal cuts in this yet.

So there was no way to improve on the cut...

would one out perform the others in different lighting conditions?
Say .. would the round brilliant ALWAYS look the best (give the best/MOST scintillation (fire & brilliance) out of the bunch in daylight.
Would he asscher emerald ALWAYS look the best (give the best/MOST scintillation (fire & brilliance) in candle light...
etc...

Hope i am asking this right.

As far as a total percentage of light return, I believe that the best cut round will always return a greater percentage of light than any of the diamond shapes mentioned.

The "look" of the Asscher in candle light with large flashes of light, both colored and white, might look more appealing to many than the look of the round, but it is my belief that the round would be returning a greater percentage of light.

A mirror would return more light than any gem, but the effect would be VERY boring unless you are incredibly good looking in your own mind.

I like this. Thanks for the laugh.. My mind is quite fascinating, I must say....

thanks for the response.

Great answer, @Wink !
@Maggiemeans - watch some Good Old Gold videos to get an idea of how the best of the best compare. If nothing else, it’s a beautiful show.

@RetroTreeGal been watching foy years.... but never saw a line up compare in one shot of all those ideal different cuts
I think this has been discussed before somewhere on here! I guess there would be no benefit to the proprietors to line up for a “sparkle off”, maybe if someone bought an example of each to test it out?? I’m sure no one is that flush with cash, though!

thanks @cflutist I love this video.. these are all round brilliants... was hoping to see the different cuts lined up together.. Maybe I am just crazy.. it was just a thought i had based on something @CharmyPoo said as I was reading in the archives that gave me pause... and made me wonder about it. I don't get to "play" with diamonds IRL so I don't have a sense for the real look of things like some of you folks do..

Interesting thought, but I think it would not be too productive. Those who love emerald cuts love them for the shape and for their more understated elegance. They will not care that other shapes return more light or have more sparkle, as this is not what draws them to the emerald cut.

I think the same reasoning will apply to those who love Pear shapes, ovals, marquises, princess, etc. It will not matter that the round returns more light as it is the shape and the beauty of these other cuts, with their differing flavors of sparkle that makes them sought out by some.

My preference for well cut rounds is well known. I enjoy seeing the other cuts, but when it came time for me finally buy a diamond for myself, it was a Crafted by Infinity round. It had nothing to do with the total amount of light return by any physical measurement, only the fact that it is the look that I love the most.

If I was to buy another diamond for myself, it would likely be one of Karl's Octavia cuts. Not because they are the second most sparkly, but because I really love how they look. If I ever buy one, I will have scratched an itch for something completely different from my first love that I also consider incredibly beautiful. Someone could prove to me sixteen ways from Sunday that it is not as sparkly as a different cut and I would not care one whit. I just love how it looks.

Just my thoughts.

See what I mean. Two men, obviously both of great taste, and yet, they somehow believe that different shapes are the best. I believe that each is absolutely correct, for them. (And just as obviously, each of them KNOWS that the other is wrong...):Up_to_something::whistle:

You are very welcome. Conundrums are to be treasured as they make us contemplate. Contemplation is always a beneficial excersize.

The best cut round brilliants are hard to match as an all around cut due to the mix of virtual facets sizes there are lighting conditions where other cuts are going to return more and brighter light to the viewer.
It is just not branded ideal cuts in other shapes that will do so either.
The modern round brilliant is designed to perform in a wide variety of lighting not to be masters of any one.
It is physics not magic.
That said many people prefer the personality of other cuts in any lighting.

Then you add in human vision and perception of brightness. If its bright enough to saturate the area of the eye it hits, brighter isn't going to matter.

And what DF said x10!!!!! :D

As an example.
A close relative no matter how well cut is not going to like any RB.
She would take a half way decent princess cut over any RB any day.
She goes gaga over a certain diamond design which I can not name :}

I have a pair of WF ACA superideal rounds for studs, an AVR and AVC, and an antique asscher. Each stone is beautiful and totally different from the other. It would be hard for me to say one is better than another. They are all outstanding. I think it is awesome that there are top cut stones of almost every shape.

Ok, first of all “Sparkle Off!” - quite nice!:appl:

The words of those above are wise. Wink, Karl and others have properly identified many of the difficulties in creating comparisons between shapes.

The tools that try to objectively measure light return (the ASET and Ideal-Scope) are probably the best standard we have. Now there are many smart people on this forum and elsewhere who will disagree and volumes have been written and debated on this subject.

I believe there is a “mind-clean” shape or standard for many people, often backed up by the lab report and the ASET and the IS and the opinions of experts they trust, but there’s also a “heart-clean” component which means... you look at and you love it. You love the way it plays in the light, the way it feels on your finger (or around your neck, etc) and it just makes you feel great. That “heart-clean” component can incorporate any shape, size or design and typically is not measurable by anyone but you.

The irony, of course, is the more you understand about diamonds and their performance the higher the standard often becomes for both components.

I know people who wouldn’t trade their beautiful MRB for anything, and others whose Emerald shape is their precious baby.

I think all of the cuts have their own beauty and desire.
My first 4 diamonds were all modern fancy cuts, 2 marquise, an oval, and a pear. I still have all of them except the 2.05 D-VS2 oval that I traded in for the 3.01 F-SI1 pear.

My latest obsession is owning superideal cut modern rounds, I have 4 F-color CBI diamonds and a Q on the way, yes late to the party but I really do like looking at my CBI diamonds. They surprise me when I least expect it.

With the 2.31 Q-VVS2 I am venturing into the world of warm diamonds and my very first halo, excited for sure.

Oh, almost forgot, also have a small Tiffany Fancy Yellow cushion (I wanted hubby to talk me out of it because I knew that we could have done much better at DBL, but hubby said that I should have one blue box in my collection).
