Ideal halo ratio?

This is a question for those halo addicts out there, like @elle_71125 ...

What do you think is the ideal size for halo melee? If the stone is around 7 mm, is 1.3 mm about right, or do you prefer a chunkier look? How do you decide?

Halos tend to be expensive. Does the price tend to hold you back, or do you just go for the bigger size of bling? Did you ever get something so blingy that you wound up wearing it less?

I I would love to hear your halo philosophy!

It really depends on the halo look you want. If you want more of a "frosted" look, then you'd use smaller stones.

There's also the consideration of the more stones you use, the higher the setting cost, hence why I would personally use 2mm melee for a 7mm stone, because I think 2mm and under the cost of the stone is more linear with ct wt than over.

There's also the consideration of finger coverage and whether you have enough "room" on your fingers for larger melee sizes.

Thanks, @voce ! My finger size is a 5, so 2 mm seems nice and chunky to me.

I never ever had that problem:lol:

One of my favorite halos ever, well it’s a tie, is Elizabeth Taylor’s ruby ring and her emerald broach/pendant. The diamonds in them are enormous in proportion to the center stone, and yes, I know those world class gems can stand up to such a halo. Therefore, my philosophy is that it depends on the gem. Would I put a poorly colored gem in a super blingy huge halo, no way, it would get lost further. A gorgeous gem will stand up to any such halo, no matter the size. I have a teeny tiny half carat tsavorite in a large halo that looks like a snowflake. The color is probably top quality for tsavorite, but the gem still pops. Likewise, there are some gems I own that don’t have halos I consider worthy of their beauty, so I would love to reset them!!

Ahhhh dreams! Of course I love halos. I would halo my house if I could. They’re not everyone’s cup of tea, so if someone dislikes halos, they’ll never suggest one. You ultimately have to like them.

As a side note, halos do tend to be expensive if you use nice white diamonds, but other melee can be very cost effective like other colored gems, white zircon, etc...

“The bigger the hoop the bigger the hoe.” :mrgreen2:

Ok, that doesn’t exactly work with this question but it was the first thing that popped into my head so... :P2 Personally, I like diamond melee to be a little bigger. 1.3 is too small for me. 1.5 is usually my minimum but I really love a nice blingy halo so 2+mm is a-ok in my book. It really just depends what look you’re going for.

Ps. I’ve never gotten anything too blingy. My pink spinel ring was actually way more blingy than I expected and I rock that baby even more because of it. I’ll definitely be getting a larger halo again! :cool2:

Now because I’m supposed to be cleaning my house (and therefore doing anything else sounds like a lot more fun), here’s some of my rings with halo size details. :mrgreen2:

Oh my goodness!! Such gorgeous halos Elle!! I think when most people think of a halo, they just think of diamonds in a simple curve around a stone, but yours are such creative and beautiful designs, worthy frames of such gorgeous gems.

Thanks so much for the advice, @T L and @elle_71125 ! And the gorgeous eye candy!!! It really helps me imagine the sizes better. So often jewelers just give the total weight of the diamonds and it’s really hard to compare.

I love your collection, Elle! So inspiring!

Btw, there’s nothing I hate more than when jewelers just list the total carat weight. :wall:

Well, you’re just the sweetest. Thank you. :kiss2:

Hi, someone sent me your halos to look at referencing the size of melees in a halo around the center diamond. I must admit I fell in love with your last 2 rings, the 2.0mm melee on a 6x5mm stone and the 2.4mm melee on a 7.1x5.5 mm stone. They are absolutely gorgeous. Would you mind providing me with pics of the rings on all sides and underneath, possibly the renders if you have them? Anything at all would help. The reason I’m asking is I have now gone thru 3 renditions of a halo and in the renders the ring looks perfect but when the actual is made it doesn’t look anything like the render. It’s been such a let down. Here are my pics,

as you can see, I’m having issues, I too like the chunkier melees in my halo, the problem I think I have is they are not big enough melees and the design of ring is not correct.
i would like some info please. Thank you

I’m going to reply to you in your other thread.

@MissyBeaucoup: for a 7mm round stone with a simple round halo, here is how it would look with different sizes of melee:
Capture.JPG

This is awesome! I have a question regarding stones and width. I’m currently planning to get a halo pave engagement ring with a 2.0mm band width. Do you think 1.8mm stones surrounding the center diamond and on the sides would be appropriate for a center stone with a diameter of 6.5mm (1.06ct round brilliant)?

I have a ruby ring with a similar center stone to halo ratio. The ruby is 6.4mm and the halo melee are 1.7mm. Here it is on a size 8 finger..please ignore my dry & puffy hand ;).91FF2FB5-32DB-4E1A-AFCF-046C7A5359CE.jpeg

Do you feel like the stones are too big? Would you rather go smaller?

The diamonds are big, but I was going for the look of more of a diamond cluster halo style with this ring. I would go definitely go smaller if you are looking to have the center stone be the focal point of the ring.

Do you have anything in mind? I want the band to be 2.0mm in width from what I've read regarding stability and thickness. However, that means the diamonds must be 1.8mm. If I go with 1.5mm/1.3mm surrounding the halo, would you say that it'd look weird?

What type of stone will your center stone be? If it’s a diamond, the 1.8mm halo stones will have a more fluid look next to the center stone. Also, my halo is framed by metal. If the halo diamonds are the type that are set without a metal border, the halo will look a bit smaller. Do you have an inspiration picture of a ring with the look you would like to have for your own ring? Halo stone size is such a personal preference, it would help to see the look you’re going for :)) .

The center stone will be a natural mind round brilliant diamond. It’s 6.5mm in diameter (1.06ct). He is making an “example” band to see how it’ll look like, but honestly I want a halo that’ll enhance the center without the side diamonds overpowering it!

A model/example ring should help! That will also give you more time to look at pictures and nail down the halo size you’d like.

They were all made by David Klass. He & his team do excellent work.

I have used him a couple of times so that’s great that he can make me one of these at some point! Thanks.

I am working on a new setting for my 1 carat RB and I am trying to decide on the same thing. I have confirmed a 2mm band is the size diamonds I want but I’m not sure about the halo melee. My jeweler today said he wouldn’t recommend 1.5mm halo with 2mm band as it may look disproportionate. I don’t know what to do.

I’m following to see if you get a rendering to look at!
