PS: Could Richard send YOU pics of the scintillation ring? I'd love to see it in profile....and then YOU could post them here...\
There's one around already on this thread

Rather easy to like, I would say...

The trick of taking advantage of such colored reflections is not unheard of - I've seen other pieces of jewelry making use of it, but no other rings. Here's another - the ruby beads reflect into the white concave petals of the pin:

i think that may be the only picture he has, widget. good gem photography is expensive and this is a ring designed and made for a private client... a one of a kind piece! its gorgeous! not sure that my spess would have as much to reflect....! but that''s why i would ship it to him so he can ''live'' with it a bit and get to know it once again. he has the eye..... that scintillation ring is so good ''cause the light going through the diamond was actually at the corners making the reflection into the metal of perfect....great cut diamond coupled with a a good eye for such things yielded a spectacular ring!

spoke with richard who would have to many modifications to fit my oval spess....i guess the other rings are there more for me to visualize the kind of changes he''s talked about. but i think a lot will depend upon how much light really does get reflected.... it is possible that i''m not going to have that experience except on dead on really sunny days! in which case is it worth it designing a ring that will only ''scintillate'' a few days out of the year?

i not sure that my spess would have as much to reflect
It might have MORE to reflect!!!

I wonder if the sides could be sort of concave "half moon" shape (sort of like swags or ana''s brooch) rather than triangular?

Hmmm, thinking, thinking....

I like #4 best and #1 is very nice too. I don''t care for the millgraining on #2 and I think it might look better with a more symmetrical stone (square or round rather than oval). I like the top of #3 but the rest is too square for my tastes.

i love that pin! wow! reflect reflect reflect!

what i like about #3 is the ''flow'' effect...and i like the band separation...or illusion of such...even though i would want it more rounded.

and i like the idea of ''wings'' or ''waves'' that are up around a bit but not more that 1 or 2mm sort of embraceing the spess. but richards''s setting pretty much has what i''m looking for....with modifications.

needs to be modified to work for an oval and a deep one at that. i also still want the girdle protected.

i wouldn''t want to merely copy any of these rings....the idea is that they provide a blueprint for modification and unique ring for me.

so, i found archived in my pictures a side view of richard''s scintillation ring...he sent it to me last april.....

will need modification to provide girdle protection.

Movie Zombie,

The scintillation in the ring depends upon light leakage. In an emerald cut diamond there is usually a fair amount along the cut corners of the stone. Set with an oval a ring of that design would change quite a bit. In my opinion it would be more elegant because the setting could be shaped around the stone much like a bezel, covering the ends and leaving the middle section along the long axis visible to the eye. It would protect the stone as well as making it visually accessable, a winning combination, seems to me.

As for the scintillation, doubt that there would be much. Your spessartite has such exceptional brilliance and so little light leakage that I don''t think it would be a factor, I mean how much better than 95% brillliance does one need?

richard, thought you''d be seeing all this! i think the paul gross rings include some of the features you were trying to explain to me a few weeks back in our phone conversation. i, too, think my oval spess would look more elegant, especially from the side. and, yes, i had the spess out again last night and even in not so good light it was sparkly all over the place.

That cab is allot smaller. Perhaps you could suggest a girdle setting rather than full ''bucket'' bezel for your stone - I don''t think that leaving any patch of girdle in the open will spell disaster, especially in the E-W and below elements of the setting, as it happene in the yellow diamond ring and the Paul Gross settings... but a strip gold around the girdle can''t hurt either.

By ''girdle setting'' I mean this:

The basics....

And a ring:

yes, i''ve only been interested in girdle bezel...gave up on full bucket/cone bezel when i saw this stone!

This thread is producing some truly gorgeous jewelry photos! What a pleasure to "read" (i.e. to look at)! The "stock" photo of the scintillation ring is only one of the beauties shown here!

I am very much in favor of it. I think the gold and the orange/amber of the spessartite will look rich and luscious together!

Deb

therein lies the rub: while the picture in my avatar shows some amber, the stone in real life does not. i''m definitely not wanting white gold! so i guess some progress has been made.

I LOVE the colors in the ring Ana posted above. The orange stone and the yellow gold are just fabulous together!

movie zombie,

There has been some discussion (again) of the Micky Roof wrinkle rings and the Niessing Plissé rings in Jewelry Pieces. I know that you liked the look of the wrinkle ring and have considered it for your spessartite. In case you haven''t seen one set with stones, I wanted to post this photo from Micky Roof''s webpage.
