I'm going to need some help with tile and sink choices in my mmh, 'unique' kitchen.

I've been ruminating and old houses have more dust, They just do- I already spend too much time dusting and don't want to add to it.

I have a satin/glossy 2x8 subway picked which is set directly so there is the option of tiny grout lines which I haven't quite decided the color of. We're keeping it very simple offset for the design to the ceiling and placing the new hood over it. I haven't decided if I'm just going to do the L or just continue the whole back wall around the doorway as well. We would love slab on the walls but the structure won't support it without rip to the stud redo and DH has no interest in it. He's fine with easy surface stuff, but he doesn't have the desire or time for anything else.
He's really just placating me now and doesn't want the mess.

Oh, and my kid has dubbed it The Chocolate Ceiling and so I asked if she knew where Hansel and Gretel got off to and she answered, "Exactly." 20230220_180647.jpg71wf4dk2GaL._AC_UF894,1000_QL80_.jpg

Me too!
I hope it does, I'm going for texture over color so I can change my wall and cabinet colors like I randomly do on a whim and not have to worry about it. I can go bolder on those. I'm working with the 'cottage'!

I also have subway tiles.. I always loved them. Mine are white though because I have a white kitchen.

I don't know where you live in Maine, but I lived in Scarborough for 5 years and SoPo for one year before coming back to Texas in late 19. I renovated my kitchen in Scarborough and I used this person

https://www.instagram.com/thegoodhomeinteriors/

She did a wonderful job, she wasn't cheap but I renovated the kitchen in 18 and I think we did it for 30K, I got all new appliances, new granite, new stove, kept the same dishwasher and fridge, new chairs for the island, new lighting (better than I have here in Austin, TX), she stands by her companies work (she's small, not a big op), but her contractors are solid, honest and on time (Usually). BOL!

 We got the island top in! Very happy with it. The flecks are to die for:love:
The little hot tiles are thicker than we thought (they had to use a different piece than the one we chose) but they're really pretty, as well. Now, on to tiling and lights!

I love it! What a pretty piece of granite. I have had the pleasure of granite countertops for a few years. Mine are not as pretty as this - mine are a dark speckled look, but they are so practical and forgiving and do not show dirt.

I'm surprised at how nice it turned out! I love it against the butcher block. It was wet when I saw it and it was really pretty, but the lady who helped us was excited and said, 'Just wait, it's wet, wait until you see it dry!' And you know what? She was right. It has even more movement, and the variety of colors isn't picked up as well as it could be with my potato skills. I'm obsessed with the flecks and speckles.
I'm just happy that I'm finally getting to spangle up my kitchen a bit. I can't tell you how great it is to have countertops that are nice.
My hatred of the old tiled counters and the grout was deep.

Your choices are excellent together! I really love your countertop (I'm partial to that type though, shows less dirt...lol)

Thank you! I'm pretty chuffed. I'm kind of winging it a little but I'm picking things that I think will layer well. I love having so many options, you really can get something perfect. I was sort of ambivalent about granite before, but I'm a new fervent convert to the 'swirly' variety! All the colors :twirl:

Put it with a thick nice butcher and *chef's kiss*

I can't wait to get to tiling(wish me luck)

It’s beautiful! It looks like fudge ripple ice cream!

I'm skipping reading everyone's posts to say that I love the cabinets. If you painted them they would look amazing! You can do a navy or deep blue, a sage color, or even white to brighten it up. I think the biggest thing that needs to be done is brightening up the space.

I will in a year or so, and I want deep blue. The family says NO!. I bet I could convince them to go medium sage again. That was the color about 8? yrs ago.

I need help deciding on sconces! https://oldebricklighting.com/collections/sconce
If you see something that would look better. I can't decide on how big or small to go. They have many more choices!

These are the two main lights. Should I just go matchy matchy with the sconces or pick something different for interest? In antique brass. I want to use the acorn shade for the main ones.

What finish does the acorn pendant have? Since the kitchen isn’t super large I would keep the same finishes for all fixtures. I also wouldn’t go too small for the sconces. You don’t want very large ones either. They just shouldn’t be tiny..

I would agree with MamaBee, keep finishes harmonious. If it is all new, I would look at the contrast. With a darker wall color, a brighter/lighter and shiny (gold) finish would be my choice. But of course, keep it in a harmonious style. While I do like the Edison lamp look, the shadows are ghastly in practice. I prefer a lamp with a translucent shade for a softer, more even light.

I agree with @MamaBee on finishes. I'm a huge fan of milk glass, though its not going to be to everyone's taste. I think in a small kitchen, match them. A bigger kitchen can get away without matching them.

My husband and I are testing cabinet colors by using a cabinet wallpaper we bought off Amazon for $30.

Well, come back here and let me know what you think! I love color and there's a ton of beautiful new wallpaper patterning!

We're thinking of going with antique brass, or the color of the bigger chandelier for all finishes. Do you think we should go matte brass, which is a bit brighter?1678335483110.png matte brass
We want something that would play off the most colors over time. I think milk glass in that kitchen would be smartest as well. I don't want it harsh. you can custom all choices on the actual site in milk glass and they all look great that I can't decide. I just know that it'll likely be a medium arm, like these.

The matte brass will look very nice, and allow light to bounce off it instead of sinking in with the antique brass. Thankfully it won't be polished so, can stand to get a bit dirty

All of the lights are ordered and I'll have them in a month or so. The light people were great and were on top of all my customizations. It's so nice to have someone actually making the stuff to spec. I actually ended up getting all the brass unlacquered so it will slowly patina over time. It's going to look great and if in five, ten years I get sick of the shades, I can get new shapes! Ordering all my tile next, and pumping myself up for the tile job, haven't done any in over a decade. Yay:???:

Oh, you think I should go with rubbed bronze or trendy with the brass/gold color for pulls for the cabinets? The knobs I have are too small for the bigger cabinets.

These are new, but I like the shape.
I'm also looking at a bunch of salvaged antique pulls in various finishes...I'll figure it out. I have to wait for the lights and see how much brass/gold I actually want, I think.

Oooh! The tiles have come in and they're the perfect complement. Really happy, now I just have to clean them up a little and put all bazillion of them up.

@ItsMainelyYou just reporting to your thread to let you know I've seen it, haven't had time to reply until now, and will be immersing myself in it tonight so I can respond. I'm not saying I'll have any good advice or guidance, but I'm sure I'll have plenty of opinions. Also, I love your home, it seems like the type of place with a lot of books and a very old Jeep Wagoneer (with paneling) outside and a lot of wool sweaters everywhere. And a little bit like my parents' house--a sprawling red brick dutch colonial with exposed beams and tons of dark wood everywhere. Very very homey. I'm excited to delve in. I updated my thread today as well.
