Cupboard love or fair weather friend, whatever you want to call me, go on ahead. I lurk and oogle but I don't contribute over here and now I want something and am hoping you will help me. I'm a user. But the worst kind of user because, and let me be upfront, there is no guarantee I am going to purchase - I'm a little scared of gems, truth be known. So ignore me by all means but I would really love if you would at least point me in the right direction.

Now that I have shared a little too much on the first date I am still hoping you will come up for coffee to hear my problem:

Our anniversary is coming up ( :appl: ) and fun funds are low. I am happy to get an I.O.U anniversary present, but that is never the same is it? So diamonds and LV are out. Which leads me to pearls and my dream - an asscher pendant or ring - ideally pendant. I want an aqua or light pink stone - think tourmaline or spinel, maybe morganite - very pale. In a gorgeous white or rose gold setting.

Where and who can I get the stone from and same for the setting? How much can I expect to pay. There is a man I stalk on a daily basis and he had an aqua that I really wanted but at $450 it was out of the running - it is sold now. He still has a pink tourmaline but it is still $350 ish and is poor-ish on the clarity.

Where should I start?

Well my fair weather friend, I'm sure we can help! Oh yes, it's on one major condition though? If we help, and you purchase, do you promise to post up photos???????

Presuming your answer is yes ............ I've found the two gems you've referred to and the Vendor's descriptions are usually very accurate. Bearing in mind you're specific about the cut, the pink Asscher, is a good price and, if the description is correct, the inclusions wouldn't be visible at normal viewing distance. Sooooooooo, I'd be tempted to at least have a look at it. The Vendor has a good returns policy so you haven't got anything to lose.

How about this? It's not an asscher but it's a lovely colour with great clarity and a fantastic price http://www.acstones.com/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=10&idproduct=3439

Or this one?

There's an Aqua here but it's sold. How about contacting the Vendor to see if he has more rough?

This one is a nice pale colour:

Is this too small?

I love this one! It's a princess rather than an Asscher but it's very pretty and well within your budget.

:appl:

Thank you VapidLapid for hunting down and posting that asscher. It is not for me though, I would like a paler pinker pink and for the steps to be more royal asscher. Nice price though ;)) .

LovingDiamonds, pictures are a given with me. I don't keep my peeps hanging! Thank you for going to so much effort for me. Honestly, I did only like the aqua that was sold. I like really pale stones and only in the traditional asscher cut.

Thanks again. And I have bookmarked all the sites to keep looking.

Does anybody know if somebody has the stone I want?

I've just done another search and found an Aqua cut by Michael E at the beginning of September. It was for sale then but I have no idea if it's sold. It's a gorgeous blue but may be a little too saturated for what you're looking for. I can't link to it because it's on another form but simply search for Aquamarine Asscher in Google and it should come up!

Edit:

Oh no ...... ignore me. It was from 2009 :(sad Michael would also be good to contact though.

Here's some asscher **** and it gives you the names of the cutters so you've got a few more to contact if you want to!

Though I dont see one available here that fits your description there could be. Worth an email, perhaps he can cut you one. He often has some lovely unheated and very pale blue topaz (mines it himself) and he cuts a lot of asschers.

What a fun project Steal!

I would honestly contact a vendor, or two or three, and ask if they can cut you something. Describe the color you want, give them your budget, any size constraints, and see what options they come up with.

For asschers, I highly recommend Peter Torraca (I have aqua and citrine asschers from him), Jeff White (I HAD a gorgeous 4 ct. pale pink morganite (check some of my very earliest threads for pics) but I sold it a while back, Gary at Finewater (his asschers look fantastic) and Gene at Precisiongem.

Wow, I love that site. I'm anxious to contact anybody as I don't want to waste their time - but I suppose I won't know any other way, will I?

Thanks again. :))

Thanks BEG. It is a bit daunting from my side so less fun for me. I just don't know what to do. I have looked up those names and wow - amazing asschers! I suppose I wanted the perfect stone to be there waiting for me - like fate.

About a setting - who are people using these days? LOGR is a joke - 1 page of listings!

I second Peter Torraca. I just bought three beautiful pale aqua asschers from him. I went right to his site to see what he has. He has this...It is not an asscher, but the description says that it is pale pink (yum). It is a zircon and it is 2.4cts and it is $300! You could possibly get it recut? When I went for my 3 asschers he only had one cut and cut the other two from rough for me. It wouldnt hurt in the least to send him an email.

I've got a gorgeous pink tourm asscher cut by Peter, tho I bought it secondhand. I've also bought from Michael and Barry 9not asschers tho) and they're great to work with.

Definitely email Peter...really nice guy! I purhased an inexpensive 1ct sunstone asscher and am very pleased with it. I'm sure he can make something nice in your budget so that you have something left for the setting. His flikr pics are awesome!

Thank you Largosmom, packrat & extra thanks to radiantquest for pic posting! I suppose I have to pull the finger out and e-mail don't I? I really hoped it would be sitting there fore me to snatch up.... :blackeye:

Okay, so I am moving the idea along a bit towards earrings... So the cut could be smaller but I would want 2 (obviously  ) any thoughts on who would set for me? Either a full bezel or double claws ideally white or rose gold depending on the gem colour tone.

Hints please, who and what kind of :$$): ?

Steal, I love projects like this, where you hunt for the stone and setting separately, and have them put together - makes the piece seem that much more special than something you just buy off-the-shelf.

Soooo, earrings, eh? Are you still wanting asschers? A matched pair of any shape is always a bit more difficult to find, but asschers in particular. You might get lucky and find a matched pair for sale, but I'm thinking that you'll need to contact a cutter (so yeah, get that finger ready). I don't know what size you're looking for, but Alj has a pair of asscher spessartite earrings. I think she found the stones at Intergem and the settings in NYC. You might be looking for something simpler and less blingy, but I thought I'd post an inspiration pic anyway. If you think you might ever want to upgrade/change the setting, I'd go for prongs rather than bezel. Also, are you thinking dangle or post earrings?

Well, then look if you can for calibrated sizes...asschers will be deeper than normal, so settings can be a bit tougher.

I think Cellentani has a really large pale morganite from Bob Kast and although it’s not asscher cut, it’s cut very beautifully and set into a ring. I don’t think Bob does asscher cuts but I could be wrong. Largosmom brought up a good point about the depth. Asscher cuts are a naturally deep design (deeper than other cut designs) and add to the fact that aquamarine and tourmaline have low refractive index, it’s going to be even deeper to get the light to reflect back attractively to the eye. If your stone is small, it may not be an issue with a standard off the shelf setting but if getting a large stone, it may require customization to accommodate the depth.

Thank you so much Cellentani (for the inspitations pic – wowzers) , Largosmom (for the info, I hadn’t thought about the pairing issue), Vapidlapid ( for the yummy stones – just not my colour) & Chrono (for the extra info).

I did say when I posted that this project might not get off the ground and for this anniversary I just don’t know enough or have enough time to work it all out. I am very grateful to everybody for their help and will comeback maybe next year and try again. I had hoped for a ‘quick fix’ to sate my gem’s itch but it is not to be. I will be getting something ready made from pearl paradise.

Thanks again everybody.
