Well I must say I had a similar situation many many years ago when I was with my first boyfriend out of college. We had been together for 4 years and he was also a very unromantic guy. No flowers, no gifts...always blamed it on the fact that we had no money. Which was true but creativity is FREE!
Anyway, he always said he "considered us engaged" (how nice) and the only reason I didn''t have an engagement ring was because we couldn''t afford one. So one day I saw an ad for a Veteran''s Day Sale at Robinson''s May for jewelry. There was a channel set gold band for $400 so I handed him the ad, and my card (I had a store card - he didn''t have a card of any kind, but he paid the bills) and said "there you go. The sale ends in three days."
He actually went. And he got the ring. But there was no proposal. I had to go back with him because they wouldn''t allow him to use my card so I had to be there to sign for it (talk about UNROMANTIC! Having to buy your own ring!!!
). Of course it had to be sized and after it came back from that we went back together and picked it up and I think it might have been the guy behind the counter that actually put it on me! There was no asking, no down on the knee, no nuthin''.
And after we were "engaged" I told my parents who were estatic (my mother promptly started planning the wedding) but he really resisted telling his family which was a huge red flag for me.
Needless to say, the relationship did not last. I think the cons just started to grossly outweigh the pros.
But now, many years later, I have a wonderful BF who is serious about our relationship and who''s probably even taken a gander or two on Pricescope to get "educated"
So we''ll see.
I agree with a lot of what I''ve read and it sounds like this guy has made one of the most important days of your life a huge dissapointment. You should ask yourself how many more of those days you want to go through and whether or not you want to settle. I''m glad I didn''t.
