Hello:
Maybe someone here has more experience with this ???
Our female dog started leaking urine at the age of two.
Perfectly healthy otherwise with no health issues.
The procedure was done properly and now has been confirmed that its due to early spay. Apparently some dogs can have problems with the muscle tone ( due to early spay) and some don't. Hormone therapy is an easy fix apparently, but we would rather not "sentence her "to this for the rest of her living days.
Since I always got help from other members I wonder if anyone has had similar problem and what worked? other than hormones?
Thanks we love her dearly and the poor thing is trying to leak it as not to make a mess.
Any suggestions please.
As I said its due to early spay ,so please no education on this one as it hurts even more.

Sorry to hear Scarleta, but in my book incontinence is much easier to deal with than mammary cancer. I wish my Neena was spayed before we adopted her at 3 years old. I will always have that fear over my head. I think you did the right thing :D

With all treatments there are risks. Most common incontenence meds

DES (synthetic estrogen) just make sure there are regular blood tests as it may affect the bone marrow.

PPA - just be cognizant of stroke symptoms

Homeopathic herbs to consider

Couchgrass: for sphincter rehabilitation.

Saw palmetto: for muscle wastage and lack of tone.

Horsetail: for strengthening wasted or damaged tissue.

Mugwort: for repair of nerve fibers.

Rosehips: good for the kidneys and a high source of iron and vitamin C.

Yarrow: a blood and nervous system tonic to address vitality. (Especially if you use DES)

Hope this helped. As always consult your vet on the best treatment. Don't be scared to insist on finding a homeopathic remedy before trying the drugs treatments. There are natural remedies on the market that you can buy specifically for canine incontinence. Good luck.

She needs a medication called Proin. My dog had the same problem and this fixed it.

I love my doggies and I'm sorry you are experiencing this, but be positive:) I do not have experience with this, but, depending on how bad the leaking is maybe she could wear a female doggie diaper (lined with a maxi pad for the mean time). They have cute ones on Ebay and Etsy. I hope you find something that works for you and your furry friend.

Thanks to everyone for their tips and kindness too.
davi_el_mejor : lots of helpful ideas here will definitely look into these.
herekittykitty : thanks , seems like lots of side effects on this one will check it out.
SweetTreats : thank you for responding and welcome to this great site. It's your first post ,so I feel special. Thanks a lot.
Your suggestion is a good one, but may create skin problems with diapers all the time, but one never knows so maybe I will look into it if nothing else works. Its would be great for puppy potty training ..

We used to give our dog the Proin tabs, but her problem is behavioral, not a medical deal like your doggie, so it didn't really make a difference for ours. The vet did say if it was behavioral it wouldn't help, so wouldn't hurt to try with yours since it's a different situation. Ours didn't have any side effects when she took it.

I hope you find something that works!

I had a male dog with incontinence, which is really rare. We got him on Proin and it worked wonderfully.. he had no side effects. Apparently it isn't the best tasting for dogs so you may need to put it in peanut butter. He originally was on 2 per day, but we weaned him to once a day, then 1 every other day, until eventually his muscle tone improved and he no longer is on the meds.
Best of luck- it isn't easy to deal with constantly cleaning up dribble!

My dog had this. I'm not sure how early she ways spayed but it was definitely before estrus. By the time she had started the problem I was moved out of my parents and my mom wanted to keep the dog but they got a pill for it that worked. I think my mom would not give as often as prescribed because it was expensive but it still worked in a lesser dose.

I have a male dog who is not neutered and he wears a belly band lined with a maxi and it gives him no problems at all. In fact he wears it all times when inside (so he will not mark my furniture) my female also has one for when she is in heat. I make sure mine are lined with fleece or flannel to make sure they don't irritate my little ones skin. My dogs are min pins with short slick hair if that helps.

Do not give up hope..

Thanks: packrat:
Good to know no side effects from Proin. Thanks and yes we will find something that works just need to figure out which way to for best possible outcome. Hope your girl is better now?

Thanks Charbie:"Best of luck- it isn't easy to deal with constantly cleaning up dribble!"
You got it.
I m happy that your boy is dry now..How long was he on Proin? Good news that it solved his problem and he no longer needs it.

Kelpie: thanks glad you vet found pills that worked and even more happy that your dog no longer needs them. That is what I m hoping for too. Find something that she takes for a while and won't need for years to come.

SweetTreats:thanks for clarifying it for me.Great news.
Hope your boy will respect your furniture one day soon and won't need the extra padding.

Thanks to everyone again for sharing your experience and wisdom with me.
I now feel more prepared to deal with it.

It took about a year, but we probably started to wean after 9 months. He has no isses at all today...which is wonderful since I always callled him my "leaker". If Proin is what you're prescribed, you can get it pretty cheap off of the internet. It was much cheaper, and my vet does price matching, so it really didn't equate to too much cost.

Keep us updated!

thanks Charbie:I am glad your boy is dry and hope it keeps that way,
Do y remember how long he had to take it for ( when y started this medicine) for him to be totally dry? Weeks? months or days?Or just one day?
Thanks

I noticed a difference within a few days. Within a week he wasn't leaking anymore at all. The reason we weaned him is bc DH went out of town for a trip (he always gave him the pill everyday) and I'm a bad mommmy and forgot to give him his meds. :Up_to_something: but we didn't noticed once DH got back that he hadn't leaked without the pills so the vet said to go down to every other day, then we were able to just stop.

charbie thanks for getting back to me on this one.

At present this problem is intermittent ,so we are still contemplating the best approach ( apparently it will get worse with time.)
Will keep y posted and please if anyone has any more info kindly post here,Thank you.
