Hi, I am perusing some absolutly lovely stones "garnets" and had to make a pass on one as I found two connecting indented naturals. One is primarily on the girdle itself and it causes no girdle to be there at all, and the other is on the pavilion where two facets meet.

They are kind of connected at one point. The stones color was amazing but the naturals scared me off as I was afraid of integrity issues and it is ever so slightly out of round.

Was I wrong to pass on this lovely stone? The color made me weep it was so pretty and the price fair.

wow..it sounds like you were really impressed with the color. i can''t say anything about the durability, but if the stone was really that lovely to your eye, i would have definitely persued it. is it gone for good?

I always wonder when someone calls something a "natural". A natural inclucion? Or an area of of the stone while cutting that didn''t quit clean up.
Right at the girdle a spot can often be covered with a prong, however the prong will have to pressed up against the stone at this point, and if there is no girdle, just a sharp edge, there is a good chance this will crack off.
What type of garnet is this?
Not quite round to me would maybe indicate poor cutting all around.

Thanks for your responses. I looked again at the stone and there is a thin girdle left. To my untrained eye the cut seems ok. Few others can see the slight out of round. I can pick it out with a loupe only.

Yes the color knocked my socks off as well as the sparkle. It is a demantoid which is a soft stone allready. It is not gone just yet. I am asking opinions on whether I should buy or wait for another w/o an indented natural.

I do trust the jeweler on this fact. It does not appear to be a chip on magnification.

could you take it, or have it sent to an independant appraiser prior to purchase or would the jeweler guarantee the setting work? it seems a shame to let something you are so taken with get passed up without further inverstigation.
