Hehehe...scones and engagement chicken!!! Sounds like a match made in heaven!!! BF will be like, "WTH???"
33.gif

What exactly DOES engagement chicken entail??? Hey, if it works, I am down...
31.gif

It''s roast chicken with lemon - do a search and you''ll find it on here

cream on top is the correct way though.
How does that work if the cream is really thick? That''d be like putting the peanut butter on after the jelly! That''s....strange. I don''t get it.

ETA: Del, no worries, babe! I would be happy to post more photos later on--I have to get back to writing now, though!

The cream MUST be really thick - it just doesn''t work without real clotted cream (I noticed you had Rodda''s as well - I buy it in litre tubs in Cornwall every year
18.gif
)

How do you put cream on?

Take scone, spread it with strawberry jam. Take pot of cream and take out a big chunk with your knife - dangle it upside down over scone till it falls off and then spread it about a bit.

You need the cream to be really thick - at least a cm.

Mmmmmm.

Can you get real clotted cream in the US? Here they only have it in Devon and Cornwall - mail-order is such a great invention

That's so strange, since consistency-wise it's the equivalent of making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich backwards. But I trust you! I will have to make it like that next time....although I'm not sure it'll taste much different.
3.gif

No, actually, you can't really get clotted cream in the US because it's not been pasteurized--I say you can't *really* because I did buy it at a British Foods store once, but for a tiny little jar with enough for 1.3 scones it cost $10!
23.gif
(Ok, I realize that $10 = £5 and that really isn't THAT much, but I could EASILY have gotten 3-4 times the clotted cream for under £2/$4! Rip off!) So yeah, I only got it that once--looked up recipes to make it at home to try and save some money, and then learned that unpasteurized milk is illegal in the US so I couldn't make my own! So I just waited until I came back here and then binged slightly.

Do you have a favourite place to go for cream tea, Pandora? J has agreed to one day take me for afternoon tea at the Ritz in London, after I saw pictures of it in my '1000 Places To Go Before You Die' calendar! But we have to book 3-4 months in advance, so I am not sure when we will go. But we will! I never forget a tasty promise like that!

Ok, another thing to add to your list of things to do when you come to England is to have a traditional English breakfast. Eat it and then ask what black pudding is.

Thanks I think it is a mighty good one :) I can''t wait :D, we are doing short stopovers in Hong Kong and the US (NY & Disneyworld) and then heading on a contiki tour through France, Monaco, Italy, Vatican City, Austria, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium starting in London where we hope to spend a couple of days around and doing Serbia and possibly Croatia, a little of a whirlwind tour.

All in or around 6 weeks possibly 7 I think 6wks may not be viable :D At this stage we are hoping to leave around end July but it might end up being early August depending on flights, visas, passports etc.

My family house in Cornwall would be my favourite place - it has incredible views, is totally away from the rest of the world and I''ve been going down there for nearly 36 years now. It''s one of my favourite places in the world, and I save scones for when I''m down there as something special (and because they aren''t short on calories!)

Asda do great scones (I like the smaller ones better than the giant ones) - and the HUGE tubs of clotted cream. I then buy some really good home-made strawberry jam in the village, sit on the terrace watching the boat races in the bay below and stuff myself silly! It helps if there is some sun as well - which does occasionally happen!

I''ve never had tea at the Ritz, but I''ve heard that it''s good!

Claire I am a Brissie girl :) cool another QLD''er :)
woohoo.gif
how seriously unbelievably cold has it
23.gif

Deelight, I''m originally from Townsville (it''s NEVER cold that far north!) ... I now live in Sydney (and it''s bloody freezing!)

nice scones, btw. Though I''m still partial to the snickers pie. Can anyone crack that recipe?
3.gif

And, Gwendolyn, I struggle to see how one can smear jam on top of cream???! You''ve got a talent there, sweetie!

...that''s going to annoy me all day now. I''m gonna have to go buy jam and clotted cream and experiment.

Thanks Claire :) they actually taste okay :)

I dread to think of how cold it is in Sydney I am freezing mah tootsies off as it is here

Gwen would be best to clarify but I would say this is the recipe for snickers pie

Snickers Pie

I read this excerpt here A single slice of the pie contains more than 1,250 calories. Each serving contains the equivalent of 22 teaspoons of fat and 11 teaspoons of sugar. Eat at your own daring still looks good though :D:D:D:D:D

OMG I just found that thread - those pictures are TDF - so gorgeous, I think just looking at them lowered my blood pressure...which then of course shot right back up when I saw the pictures of the cream tea

14.gif
I can''t get over how gorgeous the English countryside is - I can''t wait until DH and I can go back over there and travel around and see more of the country (and we''d like to do Ireland and Scotland on our next trip as well). I think I might have to add Grantchester to our trip plans after seeing these pictures

Well, it''s not liquidy at all, the clotted cream--it''s thick like paste, so it''s like how you put toast on bread before putting jam on. At least to me, that''s the closest analogy I can come up with.

It''s stuff like this, the ''proper'' way to do stuff in England that really confuses me sometimes because it seems counter-intuitive and (at least in Cam) like people sometimes look down on you if you don''t know the ''right'' way to do it. Would you ever put jam on toast first and then put the butter on top? I wouldn''t, because the jam would slide all over, making it harder to put on, so I do it the other way around. Makes sense to me to do it like that, but it is ''wrong?'' Makes me confused. And it''s only food, so does it really matter? All ends up in the same place anyway.

That looks good (and about as fattening as the one J got!) but I don''t think it''s the same recipe. His pie had a crumbly crust, not a pastry crust, and I think it was called a Snickers pie not because it had Snickers bars broken up inside it but because there was a thick chocolate layer on top, a gooey peanut layer, and then another sweet layer of I''m not sure what but it was good.
1.gif

I might see if I can do a close-up of the pie to see if you can see better what it appears to be made of...

Yay, I''m so glad you like my photos! Sorry the ones of the tea made your blood pressure shoot up though. Grantchester is absolutely lovely--if you plan on being anywhere near Cambridge (which isn''t too bad for sightseeing either, I should probably mention

) it is DEFINITELY worth stopping. So idyllic.

Ok, AmberGretchen, DON''T LOOK! This posts contains a close-up of one of the EEEEEVILS that I posted earlier!

Turn back!

Are you looking?

No?

Ok! Here it is!

And there''s always one little bit of the mixture left over that you end up rolling into a wee ball for a ''straight-out-of-the-oven-gotta-taste-it-right-now'' snack

If anyone wants to attempt these, in the interests of disclosure it took my oven 25 minutes to cook them at 190C. Mammy says her oven does them in 15 minutes at 180C. Clearly, the Irish Mammy''s oven has superpowers.

Wow!!! A bunch of smart, beautiful (and hilarious) women AND WE CAN COOK!!!

Those scones look absolutely scrumptious btw
18.gif

LOL Delster your too funny Irish Mammy''s scones definitely put my bodgey ones to shame I so can''t wait to make a batch :), I will have to try and get a chance to bake some tomorrow. Does your mum have a fan forced oven Delster that could explain the difference in baking time?

Gwen If I did not know better I would say that looks like Daim Cake which uses almond meal to make this yummmy crumbly crust
18.gif
and it is wheat free if you have not had it before head over to your local Ikea and grab some pronto, trust me on that one :D. Gees it looks good all these photo''s are making me gain weight for sure.

Do bake them girls, they're yummy! They are actually just a touch crispy on the outside, just this hint of crunch as you bite through, and then they're sooooo soft on the inside. Oh yum
18.gif

Would you believe it, we both have fan ovens? Just Mammy's has always been a superhero oven. We lower all temps by at least 10C and it still seems to turbo-cook
20.gif
1.gif

Thats really strange about your mum oven you would think they would be similar in times

I am heading up to BF''s parents house this weekend so I will attempt to make a couple of batches to take up :) one wheat free for me and one batch for the others MUAHAHHAHA.

Oh good more photos! This place is gorgeous.

I am hungry now.. after reading this thread... I want butter.. and jelly.. and.. bread.. any kind.
