I decided to start a new thread with pictures of the Xmas combo, as I call it. I'm not sure if I like it or not, so please don't hold back your comments. These are very strong colours and I think it's a bit much. The 2 sides stones are red spinels and the center is a tsavorite. Since it is pouring outside, I had to make do with poor indoor lighting so the colours shown are somewhat lacking. However, I feel it's good enough to give us an idea of this unusual colour combination.

Taken quite a distance away from the light, so the colours appear muted

Chrono, I just LOVE that tsavorite....but honestly? I do think the combo looks christmasy as you said...and I personally wouldn't want to have a ring that reminds me of Xmas every day of the year (as joyous as Xmas can be).

Beatiful stones though, those spinels are so yummy.

More than the Christmas-i-ness of the colors, I think, based on the photos, that the tsavorite actually kills the color of the spinels. To pull off this combo you need spinels that are a strong pink, not a red. Maybe even a pink that has those wonderful lavender flashes some spinel has.

I just wanna say I love christmas

Ok, I think that if you wanted to have that combination in a ring, you better have the personality to pull it off. So if I was digging it, I'd go for it! Otherwise, I would probably save those red side stones for something else. (maybe earrings?)

or or OR!

Get some 1.5mm green tsav and and red spinel melee right? The green stone could have red melee, the red stones (which could still be earrings mind you) could have green melee.

tadah! instant set!

I like the colors together but perhaps too much red? I liked the subtlety of the Leon ring. I think if the red stones were smaller (more narrow?) it would look great.

That amount of red really detracts from the green - I'd prefer a different color for the side stones (clear is a color, right?), but if you're keen on red, then smaller stones might be better.

I think the spinel pair and tsavorite are so amazing on their own that each needs something less amazing to be paired with. I like the red and green though, but would love it more if it were pink and green.

If you include the gold in the ring as one of the colors then you have the colors of the Karma Chameleon's dream. Sounds like kwanza to me!

I'm not sure if you're just playing with the colours on a rainy day or if you're thinking of this for a permanent setting?
I think the 2 colours kind of 'spark' off each other and create a tension like two very opposing personalities stuck in a very small room.
Nice as a Christmas colour combination though.

I LOVE this, and I don't see it as Christmas-y unless you decide to put pine trees on the shank. I'm Russian, so that combination strikes me as being very regal, and very rich. In a nice opulent yellow gold? YUM.

Ladies and Gents,
I appreciate your comments and honesty. This thread was sparked by LovingDiamonds' request for this colour combo. I actually braved the rain when it lessened a little this afternoon and managed some natural lighting pictures which are MUCH better and more representative on the actual colour. Not only that, I took pictures of the tsavorite, red spinels and a pink spinel together in a single photography to find out which combo is preferred. I'm not sure if I should start a poll, but that entails a creating new thread which I don't want to do so. I think it's overkill for me to start so many new threads this week. I'll have to work on cropping the new pictures which should be ready tonight.

And just where am I supposed to get tsavorite and red spinel melees? I'd contacted Whiteflash last year to inquire and unless I'm willing to go with synthetics or diffused stones, I'm never going to find nicely coloured melees.

Oh dear....the plan is to set it in 18Kt yellow gold.

Oh Chrono NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Sorry!

I love bright colours. I love red. I love green. However this combination cheapens the Tsav and also (strangely) really doesn't do anything at all for the spinels.

The acid test though is could you see yourself wearing this combo?

I think these colours are best left to Father Christmas.

Does it matter to you that the side stones are noticeably different shapes? Or do you think the setting would disguise it? I think it looks very Christmasy.

It's a very bold combo....and yes, a little Christmasy.
If it's your style, then go for it. Personally, I like more subdued pieces, this combo practically shouts at you, lol.

Why do you think after all this time, I've never set these 3 as a three stone ring? You requested a picture of the 3 stones together so I took these this morning. No, I cannot see myself wearing this at all. The colours just clash. :o

The melees are still too large for my application but the MC melees are really something. I wonder how accurate their pictures are... Usually such miniscule stones do not show good saturation. My hats off to you though for being able to find just about anything and everything. :appl:

Treebean,
I'd love demantoid melees but somehow, I doubt my jeweller would. Knowing how soft they are, I would not set them in a ring, never mind as the halo portion.

MTG,
No, this is not my style at all. I only took pictures of this combo upon request to fulfill LD's curiousity.

May I ask from where you acquired these extraordinary red spinels? Since I fear you will not use them with the tsav I may have to do it myself, which leaves me needing to find a pair of similarly fabulous red spinels

I purchased the red spinels from ACS many years ago before prices went sky high. I had no idea what to do with them but figured they'll come in handy down the road. I already have another pair of red spinels from ACS set as earring charms. I also have another single red spinel stone, so in effect, I could make a set of sorts (earrings, ring and pendant).

Umm....VL, didn't I see you post a picture of your tsav with some yummy looking spinels? :naughty: I fear you may not need these after all.

ACS had some killer red spinels - *sigh*

I love the combo lol! But I like unique and bright jewelry. I say go for it! Who doesn't like Christmas anyway!?

It'll make a great Christmas ring. I don't mind the combo but it's not my first choice.

it does look Christmas-y!
i think a more blue-ish red might be better... although i find it takes too much attention away from the tsav... ?

Your tsavorite is a killer stone, and so are the spinels. A combination diminishes the indivudual effect of each stone. The tsavorite is the one to suffer most.

That top photo of the three stones is probably your best photo to date!! :appl:

As for them looking Christmasy, I wish Santa would put them in my stocking!! :halo:

Bruno, in a Santa suit, putting them in your stocking!
