I dont think there is a "gay" agenda as such, certainly no more than feminism, religious and whatever else that people want to be noticed, & accepted/treated with respect. No a huge fan of being being lectured on the subject personally. I am straight and you are gay. Whoop de do as far as I'm concerned....

+1. Just what I meant. What have you done, accomplished, lately? is of far more importance, and actually, a lot more interesting.

I have many gay friends. The only "agenda" they have is to have their long term relationships recognized so they can enjoy what heterosexual couples take for granted, such as making decisions in the event of illness or emergency, as well as making their commitment known to their families, friends & society. Everyone who dreams of having a wedding should have one!
I'm so happy that the state of Illinois has finally legalized same sex marriage :appl:

Working to reduce discrimination and make the world a better place, which apparently is not important or interesting to you two.

Instead of discussing the topic you stoop to discussing me.
Nice.
Knock yourselves out.

This is really important.... you have a view that most heterosexuals do not see or understand.
We are hoping for the day where it doesn't make a difference who your consenting partner is. It is slowly changing and it will take time. eg- inter racial marriage, women's right to vote, equal pay for both sexes for the same job and there are many other examples but the topic of hand is the gay agenda.

Whilst some may see it as an agenda, it isnt. it is fighting for equal rights. to be respected as an equal citizen in every aspect of our lives.

Change will take time, and everything that is done t support this, is a step in the right direction.

I agree with Greg in Australia (and it is probably much the same in the US) there IS a gay agenda, there IS also a feminist agenda as well. Aboriginal activist friends of mine have an Indigenous agenda....

The basis for all three agendas contain the notion of equal rights and equal access for all groups of people. Thankfully we are not living in the dark ages or in a 3rd world country, where we get bombed, shot, raped or imprisoned or kidnapped, for the colour of our skin, our sexual preferences, our gender, or our religious beliefs. Having said that, I believe if inequality didn't exist in our society then we would have no need for any particular agendas and that would be a perfect world.

I'm not sure why you feel you've been lectured on the subject. Saying 'whoop de do' to gay rights and discussion of them is really offensive, though. Being gay puts you physically in the risk of hate crimes, puts you in line for discrimination and sexual harassment at work or in public places, prevents you from getting married in many states--the discussion is an important one. You're privileged to enjoy the benefits that come with having a sexual orientation that is socially accepted, and you're irritated to just hear discussions about basic human rights that LGBT people can't share? My goodness; I guess I just rarely encounter people that are so openly homophobic as to be irritated by a conversation about LGBT rights.

You are right, there are agendas on a plethora of issues and while you appear to lack interest in my personal struggles, I would imagine that you might perk up and pay attention if personally affected by some sort of discrimination.

My message is not a lecture, just a quiet reminder that we are all human and deserve to be treated equally and with respect. One day you too might face some sort of discrimination that might twig your interest and bring you to your feet. I hope someone takes you seriously and doesn't heckle your attempts to be heard.

If so, then it is likely that person was unknowingly bisexual in the first place.

I'm no trained expert, but like the other 7-billion I have an opinion …

There isn't just straight, gay or bi.
It's more complex.
There is which gender a person is attracted to.
Then there is which they have sex with.
Then here is how they appear to the world.

Sexual orientation is a continuum, not a 2-state or 3-state thing.
We all fall somewhere on this line and may move on the line sometime during life.

But there is enormous social pressure to pick a team, as if there was no continuum.
Ambiguity in gender or sexuality makes most people squirm.
They'd rather you be straight, if not straight then gay, but they hate it if they can't put you into one of those two jars.

Tons of men who are attracted to men present as straight; they are married to a woman and have kids.
I read once these men are the largest percentage of patrons of 'gay' bath houses, sex clubs, or the anonymous public restroom sex scene.

Sometimes later in life (when they are less concerned with making everyone else happy) they finally realize they have the right to be honest and happy themselves and stop pretending to be straight.
I know one of these men and it was painful watching him suffer through his transition.

They don't "become" gay.
They just stop lying to themselves and others.
To me this is so sad because it harms the wife and kids … and of course harms the man.

Things like the NFL kiss are watersheds in that they reduce the negative stigma of being gay.
In the future with less stigma of being gay fewer young men who are attracted to men will pretend to be straight, inflicting this damage onto wives and kids and themselves.

I guess it is possible for a gay to go straight, but once a person experiences the sex that feels right to them switching seems pretty unlikely.
But, then again we aren't in two jars we are on a continuum so maybe it does happen.

There are (increacingly-discredited) religious groups that claim to 'cure' homos but I think that just turns men into actors so they can get the benefits the religion offers them.

Very wise post, Kenny.

THANK YOU! :wavey: I have been thinking this for years, and I was afraid to say it.

I think sexuality is not a static thing.

I also think it's irrelevant and people should have equal rights regardless.

I wanted to bring up this point;

I think (racist toad) Donald Sterling and his "girlfriend" have done more to destroy the value of traditional marriage than any number of gay weddings. Every time I hear the media use the word "girlfriend" in context of a married man, I wince. It makes it look okay. Which, IMHO, it is not.

I think gay weddings strengthen all marriage by implying "lifelong commitment is a great thing, and we are willing to fight for it."

WHOA! I think you may have taken this entirely the wrong way, Indylady. When I read this, what came to mind is that HotPozzum meant "whoop de do" in the sense that it shouldn't make a difference what sexual orientation you are, and that we (as humans) should all be treated with the same amount of respect. In other words, there shouldn't have to be an "agenda". If I am wrong here, HotPozzum, please do correct me.

Furthermore, I think it's extremely rude and hypocritical to just outright call someone homophobic (or racist/bigoted/insert hate word here) -- especially when posts may be interpreted differently from what is intended. I mean, what if someone called you a hateful "B" because they misunderstood your tone? I don't think you'd like it, as I know I would not. What you have done is spread hate without any clarification whatsoever... isn't that the same thing we are trying to eliminate in our world?

That said, I do think there is a gay agenda, just as there are other "agendas" mentioned above.

Indylady, you waaaayy jumped the gun here, I agree with msop. HotPozzum said better what I tried to express. "So you're gay. I'm straight. Who cares? Who are we besides that?" As usual on the internet, instead of expressing simple disagreement, mistaken as one may be about the statement disagreed with, too many just jump into rude language. Chill first, very unnecessary to start out insulting.

I think that would be fine to say "whoopty doo" on any other off topic thread. This particular thread is actually about a gay agenda, where talking about being gay is relevant. So these comments about "who cares if you're gay?" are way out of line.

Her point is that to her she doesn't care about someone's sexual orientation. As in " I'm a red head! You're a blonde. Woopty do it's just hair " "I like boys. You like girls. Woopty do". That's someone finding either options equally irrelevant. And I think pretending she's saying " nobody cares about gays wooptydo " is putting words into her mouth.

I agree with Niel... If we're talking about equality for all, then we can either say "whoop de doo" and everyone can get offended, or no one should get offended. We're all people. We should be treated the same.

Someone who is understanding or appreciative of LGBT struggles is unlikely to see a discussion of gay rights as a 'lecture.' There's nothing to be hypocritical about, and no reason to shy away from the word homophobia. There are many homophobic people in this country--that's why there are hate crimes, and that's why there isn't equality for LGBT people.

There's nothing rude about calling someone that makes a homophobic comment homophobic. You will not silence me for standing up for LGBT rights. When you come on to a thread about gay issues, just to comment than you don't care to be lectured on gay issues, you are openly and purposefully showing your homophobia.

If to you support gay rights, you don't feel lectured.
If you feel neutral, why click on the thread? Why post?
If you are homophobic, you write something that says, this issue irritates me.

The reason LGBT issues are in the media and often discussed because LGBT rights are at stake. The discussion isn't: 'are you gay? Am I gay?' The discussion is in the context of hate crimes and human rights. HP's earlier comment saying HP 'doesn't like to be lectured' about the topic gives context to the 'whoop de do comment'--it's casually flippant to a really big struggle for a group that is stigmatized, harassed, and not yet given equal rights by law.

Jumping to conclusions and automatically becoming so hateful only stirs the pot a little more. (yes, being hateful while asking others not to hate is pretty ironic, don't you think?) ::)
