Is this stone too large?!

I'm trying to respond to everyone's comments, and each time I do, I discover someone else has given their 2 cents! Thank you everyone! I don't know anybody with a stone this size and to be perfectly honest, I feel a bit shy about wearing this in public. I know, I'll get over it  ! When my husband first saw it, he said "That thing is huge, is there a setting you can get that will make it look smaller?"

So, a great big thank you for all the enthusiasm!

I don't have a concept of too large or setting it so the stone looks smaller. My 3 carat princess is halo'd generously and I can only DREAM of the extra Fabulosity of a finger soo small. Lucky lucky girl!

I don't typically care for large round diamonds (cushions and step cuts are another story  :Up_to_something: ) but I LOVE this diamond and think it looks GORGEOUS on your hand.

I third (fourth) whatever, the MM but would also suggest the JBeG Sophie: http://jewelsbyericagrace.smugmug.com/JbEG-Signature-Settings-and/Plain-and-Pave-Solitaires/The-Sophie-Solitaire/12794511_dg9wL#792954190_YJGXU
 :lickout: . (and the sophie has a very reasonable price tag IMO!)

If you are looking for a less expensive setting I would do one of the following, set as low as possible):

Vatche Swan: http://www.exceldiamonds.com/-Engagement-Rings-5/Diamond-Accent-Engagement-Rings-12/Designs-By-Vatche-Swan-Diamond-Engagement-Ring-191-1558.html

the x-prong: http://www.exceldiamonds.com/-Engagement-Rings-5/Solitaire-Diamond-Engagement-Rings-11/Designs-by-Vatche-Diamond-Engagement-Ring-100-631.html

Or the BGD xprong or grace (which I    )

If you feel a bit shy wearing it, how about getting something around 3 carets. Or even 2.75. If you really love the stone, how about setting it as low as you can go. We are about the same finger size and for me and my life style, that stone is a bit too big for me to wear. Keep us posted on what you decide.

Its Beautiful! It looks soo white.. Do you notice any warmth? It sure is beautiful, Hope you come back and post your finished ring.

Thank you, Mrs W! It does face up remarkably white but you can definitely see the warmth from the side. I really was looking for something with an antique lace feel, so I'm not bothered by the warmth. I have a stone that is an E and if you compare the two, the color difference is obvious but otherwise it isn't :)) .

Heavens that a beauty!!!!! Not too large at all. Can't wait to see how you set it!

Thank you, SandyCheeks! It will definitely be a simple setting without any pave or side stones. The diamond fund is exhausted!

I think it is gorgeous!!!! NOT big at all          wrong crowd to ask...lol

well, since you're asking (i guess i'm the only one!), it's definitely too large for my liking. just me, though. i, personally, wouldn't want to wear something so huge. i wouldn't want to attract all the attention that a ring like that would probably draw.

at the end of the day, however, it's all about how YOU feel about it. nothing to do with me or her or him.

it's a beautiful stone!

Yes, it is incredible! I would only be worried that people might assume a stone that huge would be fake. Otherwise, I'd wear it and rock it! :appl:

It's a 3.40 carat L August Vintage OEC from GOG (fantastic customer service :)) ). I love this stone! It has gorgeous chunky facets that reflect beautiful pastels and it's so bright! My only reservation is that I'm having a hard time deciding whether it looks too large on my size 4.25 finger. Please tell me what you think.

I think it looks right at home on your hand, but you have to be comfortable with the size and look to be completely happy with your ring

Thank you, Amys Bling! That's a good point-- I think I can get used to the size of this stone and really be at peace with it. My husband pointed out tonight that I'm waaayy over thinking this, but it's got to be just right.

Thanks, ecf8503! I know, I love it when a stone I'm enjoying goes to someone I know will describe it IRL and post lots of pics of it :)) ! I promise to do the same.

Love love love your stone! No its not too big. Give it a few wks and you will get used to it.

Thank you, thank you, kristi! I think you're probably right :wink2: !

too large?...aren't you asking the wrong crowd?... :Up_to_something:

Too large? no...... In a few weeks it will shrink and look just right...

I am not kidding... All my diamonds have shrunk after a few weeks. There really is no such thing as too large when it comes to diamonds IMO.

Of course at a certain size, say 15 carats IMO they are better as a necklace, but they can never really be too large. :o

It is beautiful, and in no way is it disproportionate for your hands. :appl: enjoy your new ring!

I think the fact you asked Pricescope members means you like and want to keep it.
If you wanted to hear it was too large, you would have asked a different set of people.
If you like it and you can afford it and your husband is fine with it, just ENJOY it. If someone else thinks its too large, they don't have to buy one for themselves, now,do they.

HI:

No argument from me--it is a dreamboat!

Ha, ditto! It's absolutely gorgeous on you and not too large at all! I LOVE IT! Wear it in good health!

I have no idea how I missed this!!! I do have a few thoughts. :))

1) Good Old Gold's August Vintage stones are my favorites in the world, so I LOVE the diamond!

2) I bought a diamond that was larger than the circle of people I am around most of the time, and I have had regrets a lot of the time and wish I had gotten the other diamond we compared with it. Do you have friend or family with diamonds above 2 cts? If so, you may be comfortable wearing such a large stone. Do you live in an affluent area where large diamonds are common? If so, that will help you blend in more. These are important questions to think about, because even though everyone here says it is not too big, this is not your reality!

3) Please, please, use an antique style or at least classic setting to compliment that stone! It would kill me to see it in a wider, contemporary style setting! Haven's is a great example and so are the ones on JBEG! My other choice would be a Leon classic solitaire, but not too thin like he has done some others. (Mine is not too thin.)

These are some good points. Nobody in my circle owns a diamond larger than two carats and I don't live in an affluent neighborhood. None of my friends (or family) has even upgraded their diamonds :o ! I "think" I could still comfortably wear this stone. I'll be honest, I think if it was just a little bit smaller, say 3 carats or 2.75, I would have no issue. I told my husband this when he asked "Is it going back or is it not going back?". After discussing it with him, I realized that yes, I have always wanted a large round, so if I send this back I think I'll regret it. He also mentioned that while his salary will not be increasing, the price of diamonds will be. This stone is cut soooo beautifully diamondseeker, I just don't know where I could find a slightly smaller one that is equally beautiful.

I won't place the stone in a contemporary setting! I do love the JbEG settings. I won't likely send this to Leon, I don't think he sets the AVCs, perhaps he would an AV round  ? What do you think of the BGD Grace or Elegance?

May I ask what size your stone is and the average size of your family and friends'? Thank you!

I do like the BG Grace and Elegance. They are very nice and would work well with any stone. However, an AV round is a spectacular stone, and I just think something like the JBEG Sophie is a spectaular setting and would complete the look to perfection! I just wouldn't skimp when it comes to the setting because I think you may regret it later and end up resetting and spending more $$! But I know, it is not my money and easier to spend the $$ of others! We can just give unbiased opinions because it is not our money involved!!!

Most of my friends and sisters have around 1 carat diamonds which is what I had for many years. When my husband said I could get a new set for an anniversary, I was looking at around 1.4 cts. and that was my comfort level. After watching these vendors for MONTHS and sending for two stones and returning them, I finally found 2 strong contenders at Good Old Gold. One was a 1.37 and the other was 1.63. Naturally the overwhelming input of my PS friends was to say GO for the 1.63!!!! And even my husband thought I should! But I am still around friends today who were married young and still wear their half carat or less original stones! I am the only person who has a new set of rings even though some of the women are wealthy now (as in 4000-5000 sq. ft. houses, some on the lake!!!). I know in my mind that we all choose to spend money in different ways, but a diamond is something that is visible all the time. I love my diamond and think it is perfect, but I have talked to Jon on more than one occasion about trading it in for a slightly smaller stone (go up in specs). But now that prices have risen so much, it would be nuts for me to pay MORE to go down in size! So I am pretty much resigned to keeping this ring, but I do love it and it is not that far out of the range of those around me to make me really feel uncomfortable. I couldn't comfortably wear a 2 ct round, but I could probably manage a 2 ct, AV cushion!

Soooooo, if you managed to read all that, I am just telling you my experience because it does matter to me not to really stand out among my friends. I don't really have any desire to know I have the biggest diamond and I KNOW you are not saying that, either. We just both appreciate the beauty of these incredible stones! And if I had waited until AV stones came out, I don't think I'd have the one I have! My honest opinion is that something in the 2 carat range would be much more practical and would not stand out to such an extreme as a 3+ carat stone, but I see that they don't have any at the moment. I just wanted to give you the other perspective to think about. Whatever you decide, I will be among the first to congratulate you because I love the AC rounds of every size!

I can also understand what Diamond Seeker means when she talks about the circle. My ring is large by most people's standards, but 1) no one in my personal circle are even remotely close and 2) it fits in my work circle. On my hands it appears EVEN larger (I wear a 5.5 which is by no means tiny) but my OVERALL hand size is pretty child-like..lol. And there are lots of times I feel self-conscious even though I absolutely ADORE my ring. Comments like "WHOA- that is a HUGE rock!" or "WHOA- he must really love you!" etc make me feel "bad" somehow and subconsciously I withdraw my hand and try to downplay the ring. I don't know.. maybe it's just me or maybe I just need time to learn how to handle such situations gracefully.

I have also had someone say a couple of times the "whoa, he must really love you" comment! (mostly store clerks!) That surprises me so much because I would NEVER equate diamond size with the amount of love!!!! I just say yes, I do have a wonderful husband, or something like that. But still!!!! (I really don't get that many comments about mine since it is just above average and not really huge. But that particular comment really puzzles me!)

It's not too big. If you don't keep it I might cry, b/c it's gorgeous, and you seem to love it.

To make your decision easier, return it to GOG and let me have the chance of viewing this gorgeous stone and possibly owning it. I can use a large size round, especially with that fantastic cut.

I am not the richest among my friends/family, but my taste for diamond jewelry and designer purse (plus other things) is atypical. For one thing, not many of them know about PS. Nevertheless, I do not let my circle of friends/family influence my shopping decision. Life is short. I mostly do not care about what other people think of the way I dress or own. Rather, I enjoy my life the way I see fit. However, I shall be sensitive about what to wear (especially jewelry-wise) in certain occasion and company. Surely, I would not flaunt a large diamond in the workplace or in a third world country. Other than those "sensitive" occasions, I can freely wear a boulder if I can afford it.

Bottom line - Enjoy your great find and move on to choose your setting. Can't wait to see what you decide.

Baby Nurse...I LOVE IT! I think it is an incredible stone that will make an heirloom piece that you can pass down for generations to come. Is it too big? Nahhh, you will get used to it very quickly. You have heard about DSS, well unfortunately it's true, just ask anyone here who has upgraded. This stone needs to be put into an antiquey setting to show off the cut, color and facets. Don't worry about what your circle of friends think or your co-workers....wear it proudly.

Black Jade...I found your comment to be somewhat off. This, after all is a luxury board where we can come and shamelessly brag (as SMTB states) about our blingy finds whether is costs $5.00 or $50,000. Baby Nurse was right to come here and ask her question...this is a huge purchase for her and I think we should support her.

xo

My diamond is the same size as DS's stone, and about 3x the size of anyone I know. I am pretty sure they think it is big, but I don't feel conspicuous wearing it at all. There have been 1-2 occassions where I did feel self-conscious. I would feel self-conscious with a 3ct roung like that one! But I think I would get over it :Up_to_something: I would try anyways!

I think the setting will make a big difference to how you feel wearing it on a daily basis. My suggestion is to perhaps buy some fakey rings with similar shank widths or heights to what you consider. I know for me, some setting styles -- like the grace and elegance and all those this shank settings -- really make a stone bigger and I think with a rock that size, those styles of settings where the stone is sort of plopped on top of the finger (not integrated into the shank at all) make it more likely you will knock the diamond around. That's why I personally would want an x-prong like Ellens or something similar, to keep the stone closer to my finger and so the shank would offer some protection from the sides. Anyways, I am sure you will make a good choice!

I kind of want to clarify something. I am definitely old enough to wear anything I want with confidence! We could afford my diamond and paid cash as we always do for everything other than houses! So I don't exactly care what others think other than I am sensitive to the people I know whose husbands lost their jobs due to the economy. If I won a 3 ct. AVC, I'd be totally thrilled beyond my imagination! But I'd be asking Jon if I could trade it for a 1.5+ ct. AV round and 2 ct. AV cushion!

My only point really was to think of the real world you live in and do not be influenced one way or another by us. Because the vote here will always be to go for the biggest and best, but that may or may not fit in YOUR world!

Bella_mezzo, you have fantastic taste :wink2: These are all my favorite solitaire settings, and I also love the Vatche royal crown. I think this beautiful AVR would look perfect in the Sophie setting! Can't wait to see what you do with it baby nurse!!

I do want to pair the stone with "vintagey" setting. The Sophie is gorgeous and reasonably priced, I also love the settings Single Stone has, although they may be a little out of the price range. The MM setting that SoftlySoftly had is a favorite of mine, probably way too much $$ although I would do it in rose or yellow gold rather than platinum. Ellen's Vatche setting is another I really like.

I totally understood what you meant about making sure the diamond would be compatible with my lifestyle as well as not feeling self-conscious around friends and family who have much smaller diamonds. Gosh, I really don't want to outshine anyone by having the biggest bling. After hearing people's different points of view and giving it a lot of thought, I think I would be very happy with this stone; I won't likely send it back. Life really is short. I don't have a lot of pieces of jewelry but I get so much enjoyment out of the ones I have, and this one would absolutely delight me! My current diamond is a 1.5 carat round brilliant and I can always wear it on occasions when the "honker" may be less appropriate.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience, diamondseeker!

You make an excellent point about the shank width. I'm really not interested in settings with shanks thinner than 2mm, but my current one is 3mm and I thought that might be a bit wide. But I definitely want the stone as protected as possible and something like Ellen's or SoftlySoftly's would flow so much better with this stone. Thank you for all your input!
