J Color Stones in Platinum

I don''t know what size melee or smaller stones you are thinking about katrina...

But with my 1.60c J stone, it is paired with 3 pointer F/G stones in the e-ring and 2 pointer E/F/G stones in the w-ring..and I don''t see one whit of difference. It''s very hard to see past the ''sparkle'' of the small stones.

I guess if you had larger stones like 5 or 10 pointers it may be more visible especially if you are sensitive to color...but for me I don''t see a bit of difference.

In the melee stones most vendors seem to carry higher colors but I think that also is a testament to the fact that color doesn''t show as much in the small/tiny melee. But larger stones, you may be able to request a lower color if you want it to match.

Lastly, if you ARE color sensitive, a J stone may not be for you. It would probably bother you to see any tinge of color and you don''t want to be unhappy with your stone after the fact!

Like pebbles and icekid, I have a J center stone with higher colored melee on the sides. My appraisal says the side stones are G/H...seems to me that most side stones fall into that range unless you have a setting custom made and select the stones yourself. My side stones are really itty bitty on my current setting so I don''t notice a color descrepancy.

I agree with pebbles that the coloration looks different in different lights, but you are the only one who is going to scrutinize any difference no matter how minor it is. I also agree with pebbles about going with G-H stones so there''s not as much discrepancy.

As with icekid, my decision to go with J was based on budget (and availability of stones). I think that I am just more aware of diamond colors now that I''ve become (more) obsessed with diamonds and began participating in this forum. I love my new ring and it looks quite white in most lights. That occasional tinge of color makes me think that I''ll go whiter if my husband lets me upgrade (again).

If you haven''t already, ask a jeweler to line up several stones of different colors side by side on a white paper. Really helps to see the color differences, but remember that the differences are not as dramatic when the stones are mounted.

Best of Luck,
Wendy

I truly believe, the larger the stone the much more likely you are to see the color. I was color sensitive to a(3ct round) i color AGS 0 with Med blue flouresence! I could definately see the slight color from the side. Face up no. The florescence in the stone only helped in certain lighting. The difference for me was H color. The warm sparkle of the i color became more of a brighter whiter sparkle with the H color, which I really really preferred. The ring with H color stood out more. I could not believe the difference until I had each one for a few days in different lighting. Now with a smaller stone I think its harder to detect,a i or j color. Also, a setting which the pavillion is partially hidden might make the side tint, very difficult to detect. I think for me I would consider a i or J in a large diamond antique solitaire ring, with a OEC or OMC. That i /j would seem right at home. The warm brilliance, is really so romantic and fitting in those old settings!

Thanks everyone. We looked at stones again this weekend as a ''color sensitivity'' refresher, because we are getting ready to purchase a stone and will likely do it online. As I knew (but was forgetting and trying to forget!) from last time we went shopping, I am extremely color sensitive (I easily pick up a degree of body color that bothers me in "H" stones) so I have to stick to the original plan. Boo! I really wish it weren''t so. It was either going to be a 1.6 - 1.75 carat E-F color stone, or a 2.2+ carat J color stone for our budget and I was LOVING the idea of the 2+ carat stone for the same $! I was revisiting this thread all the time to psych myself up and I really thought I could make it work, but after having looked in person again, I realize that I would let it bug me.

Thank god for me and my boyfriend at least I don''t have hawk eyes when it comes to clarity! I don''t think I''ve ever spotted an inclusion in an SI1 that bothered me, and almost all GIA SI2''s I''ve seen have been perfectly OK as well. So I''m not double cursed at least! ; )

LOVE all of your rings, thanks for answering my latest question!

Mine was listed as J on WF, but the cert has it as an I. Maybe WF has more strict standards than AGS? Don''t know, but it looks as white as anything I have ever seen! I think the cut does matter, because if you are reflecting more white light, it should be tougher to tell. Here is a picture, I just got it set this weekend. Unfortunately, I can''t get any pics less blurry, but I am trying. Looks white to me!

Last one. Outside in natural indirect sunlight. Thanks for letting me post!

wow suzy i love that second to the last picture, the fire and scint in those pictures is amazing!!!

how do you gals get such amazing color shots of your diamonds! my camera only seems to want to capture the white light return..boo hoo
!!

Thank you Mara. Believe it or not, I just took lots of pictures. I''m a novice with my digital camera. Most didn''t come out very well at all, but I just kept on taking more and I finally got a handful of good ones. I also love the fire in that picture. I think the camera being out of focus is what actually captured all the color sparkles. The ring is really amazing in the sunlight!

... The ring is really amazing in the sunlight!

That''s quite a ring you''ve got! Three large and perfectly matched radiants.... not usual at all.

Here''s a better hand picture, the other one made the diamonds look too dark.

It''s very hard to capture "fire" in a pic, my ring can be very distracting when driving!
