J/K color Yellow or rose gold setting and what color prongs?

Hey everyone,

I'm looking to get an engagement ring in a J/K color, VS1/VS2, True Hearts/Astor Ideal cut, 1.3-1.4ct diamond, round cut solitaire. I realize that with the color of the diamond it's better to get a yellow gold or rose gold setting. I'm looking for something more durable with strong prongs. I'm getting mixed reviews about rose gold settings, some say it's stronger than yellow gold some say the opposite. So here are my questions:

1. 14k yellow gold, 18k yellow gold, or 14K rose gold? Which one is more durable and will withstand time?

2. Will getting platinum or white gold prongs (with a yellow gold or rose gold ring) make a J/K diamond look more yellow? I'm trying to hide the yellow tint a little bit.

Depends on what setting(s) you're considering... Also, do you want the stone to appear whiter, or are you looking to play up the color?

I have a K in white gold. No reason at all to get a different color metal. Go for the platinum!

If your stone is super-ideal it is unlikely the color will show at all face up. I was however advised by WF that platinum prongs would show color more than white gold though.

Then go white metal and make the basket interesting... to help conceal the side view.
The 4 prong setting that was posted will show LOTS of side view, so you'll see a lot of tint there. Your best bet will be a 6-8 prongs OR a basket that will conceal the sides.

I've never thought of that before...I was a bit concerned about the side profile but wouldn't a more complex basket take away from the amount of light entering the rock thus making it not shine as much? Sorry total noob here...I just remember reading an ad from Tiffany saying how their classic 6 prong setting allows the optimal amount of light to enter blah blah

I had my last diamond (GIA J) set in a halo with an intricate basket, and it did not affect the sparkle at all. You just need pick a setting that will allow you to clean it properly...

I doubt she'd notice any color from the top, but the side will show tint... esp in a K.

14 k in any metal is harder. Rose vs. yellow is really about your preference. Rose gold has copper, so can show more damage/wear if you encounter iodine or strong acids a lot. Some people are copper-sensitive, so make sure you are not.

I would always choose platinum over white gold if you are talking plated white gold. I don't like the maintenance of white gold. In unplaced, I would choose platinum over unplated white gold for the color influence on the diamond. You want a white metal on the prongs. I do not agree that platinum is worse that WG for showing color. They are both functionally slightly grey and you are trying to counter a body tint (which come in yellow, brown or grey in that order of occurrence). I personally prefer a brown tint over yellow -- but that is my personal choice.

When folks talks about a detailed gallery to block a side view, here are two examples. Modern diamond only accept light through the top. Zero light enters from the side (and zero should exit from the sides if it is well cut!).

Very informative thank you! Was thinking total $8800 before tax for the diamond + setting. Yellow gold 14k, thin band, no other small diamonds. I've been thinking about James Allen but just found out about White Flash from the forums...Canadian buyer. Thank you!

Thank you I definitely need to check out more settings! How does White Flash compare to James Allen? It seems like a lot of people on these forums have purchased from them...Which site would you buy from?

with customer service I prefer WF to JA. JA I end up self searching a lot.

Also, another vendor to consider is ID Jewelry. I find that they really stretch a budget.

As for metal colors, I set my Ks in white gold heads because from afar it blends in with the diamond for a more seamless look (IMHO). Then I go with a shank in a color metal I'm digging at the moment.
