Hi,

Is it typical of all jewelers to mix white gold with platinum when resizing a ring ? Don''t think it sounds right but this guy says it is standard practice.

Platinum requires considerably higher temperatures for soldering, different solders and it''s generally harder to work with, but it is perfectly possible to resize a Pt ring using platinum. Is the ring is designed in some unusual way which makes it temperature-critical (e.g. part Pt/part gold; stones set very close to the bottom of the shank)?

thanks for your reply. my apologies, i should have been more specific with the specs of the ring. The ring is a platinum band with sixteen french set round brilliant diamonds. Eight on each side of the center stone. My concern was with the soldering of white gold onto a platinum band. Would that cause a discoloration of the band where it was fused back together after resizing ?

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am not a goldsmith, but I am sure someone who is can respond. I have been informed by more than one smith that this is a very bad idea. Gold and platinum are different colored metals and it does not compute to me at all that you could make a seemless sizing joint using gold in a platinum ring.

Wink

I don''t know of any white gold alloy that is a precise colour match to platinum, so the short answer is yes you''d have a visible join, unless the whole ring is plated afterwards.

I have never seen platinum repairs/alterations being done in white gold; perhaps some of the bench jewellers here would like to comment.

Thanks Wink ! that''s all i need to hear ! Now, I have to convince my future mother-in-law that her jeweler gave me misleading information. lol Just glad I didn''t hand the ring over to him for the resize. thank u again for your input

There should be no reason to use white gold to increase the size of a platinum ring. There is little reason to use high temperature white gold solder to make a platinum ring smaller, either. Maybe your ring is some weird exception to the rule, but not likely. The metals and the solders are different colors and once the rhodium plating wear away you may be able to see the metals don''t match. One can install sizing balls of white gold inside a platinum ring, but then no one else sees them when it is being worn.

Mr. coyote, thank u as well for your help on my question.

Hi Another one bites the dust, I saw your comment on another post that you got your fiancee the BlueNile Nouveau. I would so appreciate it if you could post up some pictures on this discussion:

I''m also looking for something that looks like Tiffany Novo but with a round diamond instead of cushion. I saw someone else''s post with the BN Nouveau, but not enough to convince me all the way yet. I''m also considering the Good Old Gold Gabriel & Co setting which is also very nice. Thanks in advance!!!
