Jewelry Jail

I’m my own jailer, and I’m much stricter than my dh would be. I have an approximate arbitrary amount that I feel is acceptable for me to have tied up in jewelry. I buy and sell accordingly. I could spend more, but I’m frugal-ish at heart.

I'm on double secret probation as far as jewelry goes, though I did just buy two gold ear cuffs, one with tiny diamonds. $mall potatoes.

My sentence was just reduced by about a third, due to a payment coming in from my side gig. Whoop! I can almost see parole in my future. :)

Lol! Nice!!

I have no budget (and I don't mean that in a good way like I can buy whatever I want). I save my bigger purchases for
big birthdays and big anniversaries. Fortunately or unfortunately, time seems to be flying so the "bigger" days seem to be
coming quicker and quicker.

I'm a minimalist so it doesn't bother me too much.

I've been in self imposed solitary confinement for the past 6 or so years. Had some babies and didn't have the time, let alone the mental capacity to think about bling.

Its only in recent months that I've started taking an interest in bling again. In some ways I feel like I need to make up for 6 years worth of bling purchases but have to keep reminding to pace myself.

Bling hasn’t been in my budget for so many years, it’s crazy. The last time I was buying anything for myself was when I worked in jewelry at the big age of 19-20, and then again around 29-30, I think. Everything I had outside of purchases back then was given to me from husbands or relatives. Yes I said husbands, plural. Being married kept me in a weird state of “I must always do for family first, I am last,” and frankly just became unnecessary.

Now I have a substantial budget, BUT, having learned through experience and all my years here on PS, I’m able to use all of that to make spending decisions about jewelry. So, I have 32 things being made. Just kidding. Only 1 right now.

I don’t plan on setting a budget for bling; I’ve had a list for quite some time of pieces I’d like to add to my sparkle and shine repertoire. Either I make room for those or I don’t. The value of PS having been my mentor/educator over the years is tremendous. I’m about to start a thread asking for help designing a moi et moi (yes, me and me, not me and anyone else) ring. I have a budget in mind but it will be part of an amount I had in my head the past few years, and I plan to make that work. The piece I’m having made right now came in under budget, but I wont apply the difference to my overall budget; it’s considered money saved and I’ll re-save or invest it.

All that said, definitely wise to have a budget if you’re on the perpetual buy-sell-trade train. Sounds fun, but also stressful ah!

I’m in jewelry jail as well after an upgrade that quite quickly escalated

I have a monthly fund too, and I’ve impulsively bought quite a few smaller things that were easily within budget, but now I need to focus and be patient. There are 3 pieces I want that will exceed the cost of anything I currently have outside of my e-ring. To me, 5k+ is a big ticket item!

Focusing is HARD and it may take me a few years to acquire all 3 because we will have to furnish the rest of the new house, want to travel, etc…but I’d like to do it before kids. I assume once they are around…all of my fun money will go towards baby stuff

I’ll also address that to make ugly remarks about someone needing to save as being unable to afford jewelry is simply classist. Also, welcome to capitalism, baby! If they are wealthy enough to buy without savings I assume they are profiting off of the collective consumption of the proletariat, so whoever you are, we’ll keep treading our hamster wheels, and you’re welcome

Also me! But really like 5 haha oops (talking PC pieces here!) Can’t wait to see your moi et moi! What stones are you using?

I would say I’m more on the “if it speaks to me and I can afford it then I’m going to go for it” train. Especially with antiques once it’s gone it’s gone. After bills and retirement and all those important things are funded, if it makes you happy then who is anyone else to judge? I do keep a tally of how much I spend so I can get a rough idea of budget but I don’t always plan it out beforehand.

My priorities switched along with my job. I used to spend money on clothes and shoes. Now I work in an environment where professional attire would be weird so I buy $25 pants from Amazon, fabric shoes from Sketchers, and jewelry.

Also wth is wrong with saving money?

I had some decent, basic pieces from my teenage jewelry store job but after getting married and being a poor grad student I was in prison for a very long time!

Fast forward, my kids are in college and between pandemic boredom and spending too much time on this forum, I have definitely broken free of my confinement. I am frugal by nature but I have managed to use that as an excuse to collect some recent bling. All of that money I didn’t spend during all of those years can surely be spent now right?

we are your faithful circle of enablers

but only if you show us pictures

I am happy to report that I am now only $1,880 into jewelry jail, down from a high of $4,370 in August.

Has anyone else made any progress to report to their parole board? Or the opposite? :lol-2:

Any former bling money now goes toward private school tuition. I’m being good out of necessity ;)2

I have put myself on conditional release: abstain from any more rose cuts (except for the ones already ordered and pending completion LOL); and no more GREEN. Every time I see a green stone I want it… forrest, lime, grass, teal, mint. But I am lacking in orange and yellow.

HI:

My jewellery is in jail--safety deposit box. I should spring it--and feel like I've gotten something new!

cheers--Sharon

I'm on hiatus at the moment. Still love looking at jewelry but admittedly I wear very little of the stuff I currently have (and I have quite a bit!) I figure its because I don't really go places much anymore.

I should be in jewelry jail but I keep breaking out. I too have accumulated more than I can wear although I do wear my rings while sitting at home at my desk. And I keep my ring and gem boxes at my desk so I can play with them when work is boring.
