Jewelry made with leftover gems...

Hello friends,

I was rifling through my gem box the other night, and found some random stones I thought may look nice together. None of them is particularly special. The rubellite is extra vibrant, but a hot pink as opposed to red. Then we have 5mm spess and 4mm demantoid. I like them too much to sell, but not enough to give the "full treatment." So I was thinking about a colorful 5-stone ring with tropical vibes. I'd like to do yellow gold with a milgrain border. But I always try to include some diamonds... in what direction should I go in that respect? I don't want anything in between the stones, because this is already going to be a wide ring. So maybe just an outside pave border? Anything more creative that comes to mind? Feel free to share your pieces made with destash gems.

TIA!
Autumn

P.S. Here are vendor photos of the exact gems (one of each side stone).

Maybe not by your standards. They look pretty good to me...

I love orange and green together (no Irish background whatsoever). So maybe a pair of earrings, with the demantoid above and the spess below? Or would they be too small? This would leave the rubellite - maybe 3-stone ring with two diamonds?

And because I can't resist it:

Love the idea of a tropical ring! Maybe a diamond could be part of a trio on each side of the main stone? So below the colored gems--but maybe moving the demantoids a bit too so there is not a straight line. Kind of like this, but these stones are all the same size. (My skills do not extend to including the main stone and other side!) 3 stones on side.jpg

I'm going to be singing this all day now! Thank you for the smile. Now we just need a pint.

I like those ideas! She's a bit Carmen Miranda with all 3 colors together. lol But I'm feeling saucy today, and aim to keep them all in the same piece.

Ohhhhh I see! Interesting... do you think this could work even if the spess and demantoid are different sizes (5 and 4mm). Then maybe do a 3mm diamond?

No, wait... maybe a 5mm diamond along with the 5mm spess (sort of against the rubellite), and then the 4mm demantoid at the end. Let me see what that looks like.

Yes! I think any of those would work. It would be like balloons or different fruits!

So this is the only way it worked, because a 5mm diamond along with the 5mm spess combined (over 10mm) are too long against the rubellite. So the diamond would be 4mm along with the demantoid. Thoughts? I wish they were all 4mm. :wall: But if I buy new spess then that sort of defeats the purpose of putting the leftovers to use.

P.S. Now it really looks like the Irish flag, @Starstruck8. lol

I love this layout as it is.

I absolutely love the beautiful color of the rubellite amongst the garnets!
I have been looking into asymmetrical rings as I have 3 stones I would like to set.
2 smaller rounds with a small carre cut diamond, funny story they are green orange and white stones haha.
But the ideas are still floating.
I have these saved for inspiration.
whatever you decide those colors are luscious together!

I like it! I especially like how you mismatched the diamond and demantoid. But, do you happen to have another pair of 4mm stones in another tropical color? I am thinking that might look more tropical than the white space of the diamond. Maybe something yellow? It might be too much but you never know until you see it.

I just thought of something else--if you go with this style, do two layers of depth below the center stone. That way you will easily see some of every color when you look down on it, instead of the spesses being on the sides of your finger.

I love the gems and the layout you have!

Colors are a teeny bit forced -- like all projects that have not occurred to us before (!).

Because the gems are paired, I see no compelling reason to introduce asymmetry (vs. if you were bound to asymmetry from the get-go).

Trying to talk myself out of YG just to be a contrarian but I think it works best here. And I envision prong-set.

Diamonds might look nice but I don't know where to put them -- except maybe four melee-size at the corners between the rubellite and spess (plural). Anything more diamond-forward pulls me in the white-metal direction (not sure why).

What a great project -- and what great raw materials to work from!

I agree with Niel that I like the idea of asymmetry for this ring. It’s already bright and colourful and fun! I picture the rubellite on one extreme end of the finger (with a half halo of small Marquis diamonds), and then a “spray” of stones stretching across the finger, with an odd number of small diamonds to fill the gaps.

I can put the layout I’m thinking of together at a later part of the day as I’m currently travelling, if you like!

I don't really love what I came up with in terms of the placement of the little diamonds, except for the marquise diamonds along the rubellite; but I don't have time to mess around with the layout anymore just now. This is more for an idea anyway, of what an asymmetric ring could look like with these stones.

I don't think of this as a gypsy set band, rather individual small baskets so it looks like the stones are just scattered across your finger. You can do bezel set baskets so they can be in YG milgrain.

Honestly a bezel center + channel sides would look quite elegant. You don’t need fancy.

This was my first iteration! You guys are so clever. So yes, before I was trying to squeeze some diamonds in, I was just going to do that style with a milgrain border. You've sort of renewed my interest. Maybe I can just put a few small yellow diamonds in the gallery for some understated glitz, and let the CS do the talking up top.

Oh wow, how interesting! This is exactly why I posed the question. I'm going to play with this... thank you!!

I think it’s too symmetrical

I was afraid to do anything crazy, because the gems are already so colorful. But I'm loving the asymmetrical suggestions!

Now I'm really eager to see what you come up with for your ring! :appl:

I love this layout as it is.

:geek2:

I would maybe position the spesses on the top and bottom of the rubellite and the demantoids to the right and left of it.

Then maybe add small diamonds in wherever they look right, or on the band.

I actually did play with this idea! Only I did the demantoid at the top and bottom, and spess on either side. I couldn't get it just right, but I'll persevere. Thank you!

I don't, but I too was thinking yellow. The white diamonds are looking just a little too stark in contrast to me, like LilAlex said.

Exactly... nothing is looking right to meee eyeballs. I was thinking about doing something like @oncrutchesrightnow so kindly shared, and then maybe including some small yellow diamonds. That way we'll have some bling, but the stones will sort of look like an extension of the yellow gold as opposed to bright white. In other words, we'll keep the colorful theme, but the diamonds will sort of blend in while adding sparkle. What do you think?

Oh, I really like this one! I also think the same design would look good with white metal

For sure! I ultimately settled on yellow gold, but briefly considered rose as well.

@AllAboardTheBlingTrain So so so sooo much yes to this!

She's so darn creative!! These are the things I haven't been able to summon myself. I debated on starting this thread, because I thought it was sort of a silly project (not intentional, but rather incidental). So glad I did!

I like the feel and intention of this!
