Journey to finding a warm/slight brown 1ct stone!

I can finally update you all on this journey! Thanks to everyone who has been following this thread and all the support. Bear with me, because this is going to be a fairly long post.

For those who have been following along since the beginning, the short version is that I was looking for a warm 1ct stone to fit in my engagement ring setting. I was hoping that I could get a CBI, but the ones in my size were too $, and Melissa/Wink said custom cutting wasn't an option given the small size and that they try to avoid the super warm stones (since the range in warm stones is so big). I found a great stone from IDJ, and was thrilled with the customer service, etc, from Yeukiteil.

As of last week, I had my ring all set with a beautiful stone from IDJ.

BUT THEN, Melissa from HPD emailed and said she had been thinking about my request and wanted to ask Paul Sledgers if he might be willing to custom cut a stone for me. I was excited, but figured he would say no, so tried to put it out of my mind. Huge surprise came 6 hours later when I woke up to an email saying that he agreed to cut a custom 1ct stone for me -- only a few hundred more than I was spending with IDJ.

Obviously at that point I had a huge conundrum. I felt as though I owed it to IDJ to stick with them, since they found me such an amazing stone, and were so kind and supportive throughout. On the other hand, owning a custom cut CBI is a f*cking dream come true, and I was afraid that if I didn't go for it, I'd regret it. So after a long talk with Melissa via phone, I texted IDJ a looooooong apology. I told them how incredibly sorry I was, that I never meant to waste their time, but that I felt as though I couldn't turn down the opportunity to have a custom cut stone. I insisted upon paying them for their time/effort/shipping/setting/unsetting the stone, and thanked them profusely. I was almost in tears since I felt so incredibly guilty and selfish.

Luckily for me, IDJ/Yeukiteil is a true angel and texted saying, "your happiness is my happiness". The next day, he called me and we had a long talk about how much I appreciate their hard work and how kind they are. I cannot emphasize enough how great IDJ has been, and how strongly I recommend them to anyone/everyone. If anything, this is my fault for being selfish, not theirs.

So what's the outcome? I'M GETTING A CUSTOM CUT 1CT CBI! AHHHH! The range is N-S in terms of color, which is much bigger than they usually do, but I'm totally fine with that. I just seriously can't believe this is happening, and I'm still a bit in shock. Paul is now searching for "my" crystal, so I'll update once it's been found.

Thanks to @Winks_Elf and @Wink for being willing to ask about this weird request, and for being willing to "bend" the rules of CBIs a bit to accommodate someone with weird taste :lol-2:

Thanks to @sledge , who I emailed in a panic about how to be nice but also make sure I get what I want. And thanks to @PintoBean for not hating me, despite being the kind person who got me in touch with Yeutikeil. And of course, thanks x10000000 to IDJ. You guys are the best.

I'm nervous, excited, and still feeling guilty/selfish. Basically, I have every possible emotion :twirl:

dramatic turn of events and hats off to all for being class acts - idj, cbi & you! can't wait to see photos!

Excited to see the result! Also agree. Yekeutiel is great.

Oh wow, that's fabulous news!!! Gosh, I can't imagine how conflicting this must have all felt for you though. You clearly have huge respect for all of these amazing vendors, and it's really hard to have to choose only one of them. It ends up feeling a bit like cheating I think, and that's not a particularly nice feeling to have when you're an honest individual and know everyone is trying their best for you - so I do understand that it must have been a very difficult and heart wrenching decision for you. It sounds like you handled it really appropriately and beautifully though; how great you were able to reach out for advice and such about such a difficult decision. It's a type of communication that is difficult - it would certainly make me nervous, anyway.

I think what you have beautifully demonstrated here is how wonderful IDJ have been to you, and there's no price on that type of lovely publicity for them. What will happen to that absolutely utterly beautiful stone you've moved on from? I mean, it was obscenely stunning. I can think immediately of at least one other person on PS who might like that type of stone... perhaps we can point someone else in that direction? I guess it depends on what is happening with that stone and IDJ's feelings about it etc.

Having said all that, having a CBI that essentially meets all your requirements, and is within budget is pretty phenomenal, so that's really awesome, congratulations!!! How great of them to go out of their way for your unusual request. May I suggest you start a new thread about it? Because people [ahem,] search for threads about CBI...

Congratulations again! :D Exciting stuff. :D

I can only imagine your emotional turmoil but I 100% think you made the right decision for you!

And good customer service is proven not when things go right, but when they go "wrong". Both companies have really instilled my faith in them. Wow! So great :)

Woo hoo!! So excited for you! And kudos to IDJ and CBI for their exceptional customer service. Yekutiel is an absolute gem. Can't wait for more updates!

I know this has been such a hard part of the journey for you, but I truly respect you for the way you have handled the situation. I know it pained you tremendously to cut ties with IDJ as they really did find you an amazing stone and provided nothing short of excellent customer service, even after learning you were canceling the order. That says volumes about them, and how you effectively handled the situation from your side.

But as always, you must follow your heart. To borrow a line I previously told you, if you didn't go for the dream rock you would always be thinking about the one that got away instead of the one that was on your finger.

So I am very excited to see what HPD/CBI delivers for you. I have zero doubts you will be blown away by the superb customer service and a total kick a-- diamond!

Thank you for entrusting me with some details and allowing me to be a part of your think process as you sorted out the final details. I am truly honored and hope that I was able to help you in some meaningful way. Most importantly, thank you for being you and handling this as a true master. You treated all parties right, and will get your dream rock to boot. I truly couldn't be happier for you! :cool2:

So now the important question... how long do we have to wait to see the finished product?! :Up_to_something2:

Haha good question! I'm afraid it'll be a while.... Probably 8 weeks or so. But I'm hoping it's worth the wait!!

I’m sure it will be!

Very excited to see this custom cut! Agghhh! The wait gonna be tough!

Very impressed with IDJ. Very excited for you to get a CBI diamond, too!:appl:

Thanks to everyone for being so supportive! As an (annoying) aside, I went today to ask a local B&M jeweler who does appraisals about the possibility of having my ring appraised after I get the diamond. Just wanted to discuss costs, etc. He asked why I would bother getting a custom cut stone, and smugly told me that "ideal is ideal...they are all the same". And then went on to tell me "not to believe everything you read on the internet". :hand:

So irritated! I didn't even know what to say or how to react, so I just said, 'ok', and that I'd consider buying from him (which I certainly will not). :angryfire::angryfire::angryfire::angryfire::angryfire:

This is where you politely ask him for a one dollar bill and a cigarette lighter. Upon receipt, slowly roll the dollar bill up and then set it on fire. When he gets all excited and asks why. Calmly tell him to shut his c*ck holster and enjoy the visualization of you and all your dollars walking out the door, and that next time he should take the time to listen to his customer instead of treating them and their priorities in a condescending manner. Drop the burning dollar on the counter top and walk out.

But you know, your way was probably a smidge more diplomatic. :mrgreen2:

I want to hang out with you!

Aaahh @lovedogs there’s always someone whose gonna say something...I guess you’ll also be looking for another appraiser? Don’t give it a second thought what others say, even if they think they are ‘professionals’ or in the business!

I was going to suggest laughing disbelievingly and saying “sure, whatever, trust someone with something to sell me over a bunch of well educated people with no conflict of interest” before taking your money out the door but @sledge, yours is a much much funnier response :mrgreen2::lol-2:

Other jewelers hate when you come in with a diamond from an internet vendor (or other jeweler period), so the best thing to do is to not say anything other than I need my engagement ring appraised for insurance purposes and leave it at that. However, those appraisals are notorious for being inflated, and it is worthless in that case, because who wants to overpay insurance premiums?!

However, my best advice is to ask HPD to give you a receipt that adds in your setting description and value as a note (since they will have your setting to set the stone). Then you should be able to insure with your sales receipt and attached copy of the AGS report. That's the smartest thing to do.

Good idea--that's what I will do. I was only asking about the e-ring appraisal since I was there to get my David Michael necklace appraised. I don't wear it enough and am trying to wear it more, but need it insured since it's the priciest piece I own. I was just taken aback by the attitude re: online diamonds. But to be fair, he was very complimentary of the necklace :)
